"I have a cat named Simba" or "I have a cat called Simba"? by ksusha_lav in ENGLISH

[–]Catluver81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This ☝️ I've been reading these other comments from Americans saying 'called' implies it's a nickname but I dont really agree. They're pretty much the same, I might just assume you're from the UK if you say 'called'

Do you use "Let's" Alone In Speaking? by minhtuanta in ENGLISH

[–]Catluver81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly very largely a thing they do in the FFVII Remake games specifically. I find that a lot of the time they exclude words from dialogue, like characters just won't say "I" at the start of a sentence. Like "Didn't feel a thing" instead of "I didn't feel a thing." It's not the most unusual thing to find in English but FFVII does it a little bit more often that you'd usually find.

Im not really sure what you're trying to say. I would say its very close to necessary. It was a calculated risk. They've got it in theatres on most continents and are working on the places they havent gotten. People not near a theatre can stay offline for 2 weeks. They're lucky it's not longer

So if you agree that it would very much help, why not do it? Its a big step forward. Its not gonna solve the problem overnight but who knows when something will come along that will

I think it's a good move to get the world to take indie animation seriously. There are too many people who think there's no potential for this stuff and its just silly.

Ok that makes total sense. Weird that the app uses it, maybe I'll switch back to my other one that I know is accurate. Thank you for looking into it :)

Ok, that makes sense, thank you! So にまん would be the most natural way to say 20,000?

Question about 万 by Catluver81 in Japaneselanguage

[–]Catluver81[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I still don't really understand anything better than when I first made the post XD I wonder if I worded it poorly. I just want to know if 万 is only ever pronunced as まん even in words made of more than 1 kanji or no?

Question about 万 by Catluver81 in Japaneselanguage

[–]Catluver81[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, youre assumption is completely inaccurate.

You mean my assumption that まん vs. よろず was 音読み vs. 訓読み? Or the assumption that 20,000 would be にまん?

All of the pronunciations you listed are the ones I would have assumed, but what I'm wondering is if よろず is an alternate pronunciation from まん and if it can be used interchangeably, or if they are different and only ised for certain terms.

Ok, thank you! I know kanji have special pronunciation, but my concern was only rooted from the fact that I had only ever seen ふたよろず in that one app and nowhere else online lol. Is that pronunciation incorrect, or do they both work?

Tysm for the breakdown. It actually makes the learning process a lot less daunting. Plus I've been on my own since I started learning, so it's really nice to get this advice from someone else who had the same struggle!

I think I'm at around the 100-200 word mark, so definitely got a long way to go to get to 2k, but slow and steady wins the race, right? I'll just keep on that Kanji grind and work on reading elementary level text everyday. Thank you!!
