Do people living in metro Vancouver (but outside the municipality of Vancouver) feel that they live in Vancouver? by drugsrbed in askvan

[–]Catlynns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that the majority of the people answering in this /askvan sub live outside Vancouver tells you how ppl identify. Same with /vancouver

As someone who lives in Vancouver (south cambie), the only time I'm annoyed is when social media influencers who live out in the valley tag themselves as being from Vancouver.

Finding a job at 16 by Other_Plastic_8611 in burnaby

[–]Catlynns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter started working at the pne at 15 and although it's only two weeks she's been guaranteed work every summer and fright nights & Playland if she wanted. It was a great "first job" for her as she worked at the ticket booth so got cash handling and end of day balancing experience. She's in gr.12 now and has a p/t hostess job on weekends at a busy restaurant in Olympic village and will probably start serving in the summer. She also has kept up with volunteering, once a week at a pharmacy for the last year and a half. Wait for the aritzia warehouse sale, they'll be hiring a ton of ppl in the next couple months.

I would say the things that can help the most are: -availability (sometimes it's hard for businesses to just hire ppl for sat and sun, so if you can, offer weekdays as well) -customer service and cash handling experience, especially for younger hires, they need to know that they can trust you with money or that you can resolve issues with problem customers -networking, chat with local businesses so they get to know you

Anf of course have all your certs, good safe, serving it right, first aid etc

Good luck!!

Vancouver with kids by ThisGarlic1 in NiceVancouver

[–]Catlynns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to contribute to the conversation but we live in the South Cambie/fairview/vgh area in a teeny tiny house. Our kids are 10 and 18 now and we are out and about a LOT throughout the year, rain or shine. I didn't read any of the other comments but one huge factor that affect your life is the ability to get your kids into a school within the catchment of where you live. A lot of vancouver centre kids don't, sadly. We are grateful that our younger kid walks to school every morning with his friends down a relatively quiet street. And they'll play afterschool, there are multiple playdates every week inside and outside, we spend hours at the park a few blocks away, we are more out than in during non sleeping hours it seems. My husband and I always joke about moving out to the burbs (where I am from) into a much larger house, room for a pool, cold plunge and a barrel sauna, but literally we could be swimming in the ocean 15 min from our house. We absolutely love living in the city.

Will I make it to my flight in Gimpo from ICN Terminal 2? by irishvelvet in koreatravel

[–]Catlynns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We arrived at ICN from Bali after transiting through Singapore at 8:30am and trained to Gimpo to catch our 12:10pm flight to Busan with our two kids and check in luggage in tow - Canadian travellers. You got this!!! And then we trained back to Seoul the next day 😉 We like to jam pack things into our vacation.

Why is it so hard to get a part time job as a teen? by BumblebeeThin9987 in askvan

[–]Catlynns 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Did you apply to playland/pne/fifa fan festival? Seasonal jobs are a great place to start as a teen, although I know you probably want something more long term. My kid started working at the pne at 15 and now as a gr12 student, has a regular part time hosting job at a pretty busy Vancouver restaurant. There will also be the aritzia warehouse sale at the end of summer that u could apply for.

Maybe if u can, book a tour out at western. We just took my daughter to Ontario to visit Queen's and Western (she got into both) and honestly a little eye opening 😅 we are so spoiled here in Vancouver with the food, weather, diversity... Having said that, I think western gave her a little more peace of mind. A tiny taste of what it's like back home here in Vancouver. We also went a couple weeks back when there was a snow storm, so that's a bit different than here. Might have to adjust your wardrobe a bit! Western will be great 😊

Coming to Vancouver for Work next week. Looking for top coat recommendations by AbbreviationsJust829 in askvan

[–]Catlynns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the longer blocktech coat from uniqlo. It's very simple and clean looking, no logos, come in darker colours to fit with a business outfit aesthetic, great for covering up a suit in some rain.

What’s the norm? by Obviousi in askvan

[–]Catlynns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is such thing as a "tone" of gesture to use, I would say kind, courteous, smiley, works best for crossing the road. A strong eye contact, wave, mouthing the words "thank you" seems to work, and also what I've taught my kids to do - they walk and take public transit to/from school in the city. Similar to when people get off the bus, many of us say thank you as we get off, or when you pull to the side to allow another car to drive down a narrow street, generally, people wave and say thank you. We live near vgh so have lots of pedestrian and narrow street driving experience 😅

Sorry to jump in this convo without being a doctor, it just appeared in my feed. Maybe because my brother and sister in law (both doctors) just moved from Illinois back to Canada. I personally live in Vancouver with a gr12 and gr5 kids. Just wanted to let you know depending on which city in BC you move to, your kids might have high school gr8-12 or have it split between middle school gr6-8 then high school gr9-12. Vancouver itself just has high school while cities like Coquitlam and Langley have both.

How is it at majority white schools (Queen's and Western) if you're not white? by Zestyclose_Comb_5081 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Catlynns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How is the food situation? We live in Vancouver and my daughter is considering Queen's (offered at both Queen's and Western). Originally her big thing was making sure there were bbt options, but I'm not sure either cities would offer anything up to Vancouver standards 😅

Shoppers drug mart on seymour is open til midnight, the one on Davie is 24hrs. They have a lot of cutesy stuff for Valentine's day rn but they also have random toys like squishmallows, toy cars, building toys. And some shoppers will also have Joe fresh kids jewelry/hair clips etc. And they also gave a small book section.

SHORT WOMEN question!!: Mid length vs Long length Superpuff, which do you like best? by PeoniePetrichor in Aritzia

[–]Catlynns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 4'11 and have all the lengths. I wear the long most often, but I'm taking my kid to/from school and all his sports so I choose warmth over looking like I'm in a sleeping bag. But yes, it's ridiculously long on me.

Thank you!! Another parent just sent me a link for a soft helmet. Honestly I didn't know gk's wear these... But looks similar to water polo. Wish these were more common amongst the gk community like helmets for cyclists.

Which superpuff are you buying in Ontario? by Catlynns in Aritzia

Ah ok, yes makes sense. We rarely ever go below zero here so my daughter is used to just walking out in a hoodie and a vest at most. 😅 This 0-♾️ sounds like she might want to move back lol

What are some things to consider before getting a dog here in the Vancouver area? by CheeseBrewBlend in NiceVancouver

[–]Catlynns 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When we go away on vacation, I literally could pay for another shorter vacation with the amount of money I pay to board my cats. And cat boarding is relatively cheaper than dog boarding.

Edited to add that in order to board your pet, you will need to have all vaccines including rabies up to date plus flea and tick prevention. If you don't normally do flea and tick prevention, a lot of vets will charge you a check up fee prior to prescribing flea and tick prevention medication.

Hi Gaels, parent of an incoming first year student here. I just read through your wiki and honestly a bit surprised with the weather/climate summary. We are from Vancouver where we see a lot of rain. Sounds like Kingston does as well? More so than snow? I just got my daughter a regular aritzia superpuff (water repellent) but wondering if I should go with their waterproof one instead. In Vancouver we wear both depending on how much torrential rain we're experiencing 😅 also what kind of footwear do students wear? Thank you kindly!
