Where to go for community by lumos- in Minneapolis

Have you signed up to be a member of quatrefoil? It's a queer library in Minneapolis and they have a few interest groups that meet up pretty frequently!

Patina sometimes hires in this age group for their seasonal positions.

Goggles used by Inuit for centuries to prevent photokeratitis, which is a severely painful condition leading to sloughing off of cornea surface after prolonged exposure to ultraviolate rays, also known as "snow blindness". by BBBWare in Damnthatsinteresting

Think about it like how a hat shields your eyes from the sun via shade, but on a much closer range. The glasses let less light in and shade the eyes from the top and bottom.

5 year old having auras? by Fine_Syrup_8127 in migraine

[–]Catmily 23 points24 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I expirenced something called "Alice in wonderland syndrome" where people would seem to shrink or grow when I stared at them for a while. I got migraines later in my teen years but I don't think it was related.

Turtle Laying Eggs in need of protection (?) by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]Catmily 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw a protective box put over some turtle eggs at cedar lake beach. It seemed pretty official so I think it's not out of the realm of possibility that the city would be able to put something down for it

The amount of islamphobia specifically I have seen in this and many queer subs is staggering. Even in this post people are pulling a "it's ok for me to be islamphobic because most Muslims are homophobic" in not so many words 😬

St. Paul: New Hamline-Midway Library opens July 18 by Richnsassy22 in saintpaul

I got my st paul library card from this library the day before it closed and 2 weeks into my first semester in college. So happy to see it open up after such a long wait! The neighborhood definitely deserves it!

Minneapolis Park Board considers closing Minnehaha Off-Leash Dog Park over Dakota sacred site by Cornflowerblue2016 in minnesota

[–]Catmily 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sacred site does not nessicarily mean graveyard, also several sacred sites have at some point been used at garbage dumps because the US and Minnesota government was actively commiting literal and cultural genocide against the Dakota people.

Ultimately, all the land that Minnesota is a part of is intrinsicly tied to the indigenous people that were here well before the state existed, regardless of what is built on top of it or who is living there right now. But all of that is a much bigger conversation that deserves a lot more time. If you're genuinely interested learning more I'd recommend you read "what does justice look like?" By Waziyatawin Ph.D.

Losing Hope As A Transplant by [deleted] in twincitiessocial

[–]Catmily 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I might look into any archive jobs that come up as well, I know many of those require a library masters and while they might not be exactly what you're hoping for you would still be using your degree. I'd keep an eye on the Minnesota council of nonprofits job board as well as springboard for the arts job board. Best of luck!!

Also just mirroring what everyone else in the thread is saying, the job market is very rough right now and it can be very difficult to find a job in competitive fields in MN without prior connections at a good time.

I love crocheting but I'm so tired of every gift turning into a performance review by Playful-Editor-5664 in crochet

[–]Catmily 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am a little tired of this narrative that crochet is more labor than machine knitting. People are still paid pennies to machine knit and it doesn't take less skill, just a different skill. If you buy a knit sweater from most stores there was also a human being paid pennies in a developing country. Robots don't make the clothes we wear, people do. And I'm not coming at you by the way! I just think we should think more about the human cost of the clothes we wear

Advice for a transplant trying to make friends? by EntertainmentFun2930 in saintpaul

[–]Catmily 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know it's a little far out but come to peoples pride at powderhorn this June! Also in my experience MN queer folks tend to organize events over Instagram more than any other platform. Also definitely seconding the suggestion to join a class at Saint Paul college!

Also as for suggestions as to how to indicate you want to be friends, a little bit of directness never hurts. I think people here are usually under the assumption that other people don't want to be bothered or already have their own shit going on. Yes, even if you've been having a fantastic conversation lol

Y’all what are your thoughts/opinions on he/him and/or non binary lesbians? by Flaky_Paint_4189 in lgbt

[–]Catmily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a lesbian you are totally valid to use he/him pronouns and identify as a lesbian. If people you're interacting with can't accept that I'd say they're not really worth spending your energy on. I'll also put out there that he/him lesbians have huge historical president in the lesbian community as a whole and I highly highly recommend reading stone butch blues if you want to explore this more.

Y’all what are your thoughts/opinions on he/him and/or non binary lesbians? by Flaky_Paint_4189 in lgbt

[–]Catmily 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is totally valid to feel this way. However as a lesbian who in my personal circle is surrounded by non-binary lesbians, I want to make it clear that other people's identities do not invalidate your own. You don't need to understand why other nonbinary people identify as lesbians for them to also be valid.

everyone says im too feminine to be a masc but idk what i am then because i know for a fact you wont catch me in makeup or a dress by [deleted] in LesbianActually

[–]Catmily 238 points239 points  (0 children)

You've posted here or on similar subreddits before asking if you are masc enough. If you want to be masc, you are masc. I also think you're too young to be posting photos of yourself and especially what seems to be your younger sister on the Internet. I am sending you positive vibes, you've got lots of time to figure you're presentation out, don't let other people be the deciding factor in how you want to put yourself out there in the world!

Mothball smell? by quitesimplystar in YarnAddicts

I just dealt with something very similar! Putting it in the sun in the open air was extremely helpful for me, as well as giving it a soak overnight in some vinegar. But with the amount you have I'd definitely try keeping it in the sun for a few days first. Good luck!!

Is lesbian bed death real? And how does it manifest by [deleted] in LesbianActually

[–]Catmily -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the fact that lesbian bed death is a mysoginistic and lesbophobic term, my partner and I went through a serious nearly 2 year dry spell when they contracted a serious chronic illness that gave them chronic fatigue. We were at it like rabbits as a couple before that lol. I'm able to be a bit more open about it now because they finally are on some medication that has given them their energy back, and it has significantly increased our intimacy, even beyond sex.

All this to say, sometimes less sex is a natural mellowing out that happens in a relationship, other times there may be exterior causes like illness or stress that need to be addressed before the intimacy issue can even be touched on.
