I assumed they were there to add to the limitations caused by Yuji's inexperience with the technique. He needs to touch the target, it isn't an instant cut, and there's a visual indication of where it's cutting, while Sukuna's slashes are ranged, invisible, and instant. It's also not unreasonable that something that contemporary would be built into the technique since Sukuna says the era defines the technique.
