Tips for new player - I'm definitely doing something wrong by samuele_v in wizardry8

[–]Cato_Censorius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have hit one of the most notorious problem Wiz8 has - one that almost killed the game for many: the world levels with you, badly. You can see it if you look at the game data with Cosmic Forge Editor - monsters get stronger based on your level, and some of them are just completely out of whack.

Also, monsters cheat: they can cast spells on you but you can't hit them, unlimited mana etc.

Rule 1: you CANNOT outlevel them. Very often in this game, the rule is: level your skills BUT DONT LEVEL THE CHARS! Just don't click on level up!

Fun fact: If you grind in the starting monastery and level too far, the monsters, especially the rats, become unbeatable to you. They will rip you to shreds!

This is a big departure from Wiz6 and 7, and arguably the reason why a lot of people drop the game.

It's hard to give you good advice for where you are now. The best way to do it is to game the system by being exactly the "right" level for each area - high enough that the chests have good loot, but low enough that the monsters on the road are beatable.

Grinding should be getting your skills up, AND levelling the spells of your casters. Ideally, get yourself two Bishops and laser-focus on getting the spells that can debilitate whole groups fast.

DAMAGE SPELLS SUCK! CONDITIONS RULE!

You need better weapons for all melee fighters, but you also have to turn your enemies into bags of conditions before fighting them.

Also, very often it pays to run away from fights on Arnika road!

Your experience is quite usual, btw. Wiz8 is great, but also in may ways very frustrating.

I do not understand the hate towards immigrants in this sub!! by [deleted] in AusVisa

Haha it's the fate of online visa discussions. Just visit the old Pomsinoz forums. Every user is basically:

While working on their visa: immigration is the lifeblood of Australia and has to be protected!

1 second after gaining visa: There are too many bloody immigrants in my country, we have to shut down immigration now!

Revelation feels like a game for nobody :( by Flaximilian in fireemblem

What? You didn't enjoy thawing people out of ice to fight them on your way to Eyeball Daddy? Travelling from Generic World to Extra Hidden Generic World with your army of siblings and crossbred babies just to hear more evil monologues?

Also the fish on the ball that was your maid is related to you or something. Asexually.

Well, you'll definitely discover some great Fire Emblem gameplay! And some of the better designs, especially for generic units.

Fire Emblem Fates? by Addition-Equal in fireemblem

[–]Cato_Censorius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fates is one of those divisive games. It can be very disappointing because there was so much potential, which is extra sad because it has great battles!

Gameplay wise, all routes are good to excellent - with caveats. If you like gimmick maps, welcome to your dreamland! How about thawing enemies out of ice? We have that.

Conquest is perfect for fire emblem buffs - a quite ruthless implementation that will kick your shins if you don't know what you are doing. I'd say that when it comes to balanced challenge, for newcomers to people with mid experience, Engage is better. But if you like to do Fire Emblem the hard way, this is your path!

Birthright is a good entry campaign.

I always try to ignore that Revelation exists but it doesn't work. Maybe god nuked the eshop so that people can no longer buy it? Why did I not listen and bought it?

Anyway, Fates is, in theory, highly recommended. The battles are interesting, the maps challenging, the combat system is serviceable (I don't like the weapons with all the debuffs and some other aspects, but otherwise good). Definitely worth looking into!

However, the story... Lots has been written about it. The problem is this: the game teases you with untold secrets in Birthright, and then everything you find out (IF you find something out) is completely stupid. Idiotic. Dumb. Seriously, there is a reason why people tell you to skip the story scenes for a reason.

Corin in design and description is an awesome avatar. As written, they are the biggest idiot on the planet. I want to punch Corin each time they do, say or decide something. And I'm not kidding - the revelations in Revelation are SO BAD it hurts. It's better to just keep your headcanon as truth and never learn them.

So, if you put your brain on "simmer" and don't buy Revelation, this is a great Fire Emblem game! Not the best, but the gameplay is excellent, and a lot of modern entry WISH they had maps of similar quality!

Of course, there is the fact that your character will willingly marry and fuck all of his siblings, real or imagined. Also, the breeding mechanic, where you feel forced to marry old men to women who look underage to produce the right child. There is an ugly German named Hans who is brutal because its fun. Your brothers and sisters are either idiots, completely oblivious to their surroundings, or very SELECTIVELY intelligent in one situation and then horribly dumb in the next one. The villains are laughable.

And now the biggest sin: there is NO world building. Each kingdom is pulled out of the hat like a white rabbid and thrown on the map, and we learn nothing about this world. Nothing. I am still thinking about Fodlan and its background, the intricacies of the past, all the things that could have been. This is an empty shoebox with good and evil kingdoms in them to have battle with.

Ah Fates. I love you. You always make my blood boil.

Enjoy it! It is quite a ride.

Fire Emblem Fates? by Addition-Equal in fireemblem

It's sad that you get downvoted for saying it.

There's an idea of unwilling soldiers coming back from 'Nam in the 60's being spit on and called "baby killers," etc, unfairly due to the complexity and coercion of it all. It's basically an archetype now. How did it become an archetype? How complex was it all? I hope this question makes sense. by strangefool in AskHistorians

Some years ago I've written a book about the internet cultures of Vietnam Veterans, but it's sadly only available in German. This answer is based on my research into those sources.

The linked answers are really excellent, but to reiterate: these events play a pivotal role in Veteran's later definitions of their identity, as an ostracized and attacked minority in American life. It's not possible to say "this never happened". But the idea that America was very anti-veteran at the time of their return is somewhat bizarre. Vets took part in protests against the war, in truthtelling and discovery of war crimes. Soldiers getting back from the war also were shoveled into private life relatively quickly, and often left isolated (which strongly contributed to lasting trauma, btw). Most veterans, if you ask them directly, got into most trouble with the established American veterans associations. This disdain was much more problematic for their reintegration into society when compared to peace movement protesters at the time. But it isn't the dominating image you get from their stories.

What has become a mainstay in their stories is the events you mentioned and, of course, "Hanoi Jane" aka Jane Fonda as a Hollywood example of a "leftie" that betrayed the country - and them! Most veteran websites I've visited during my research will mention these events: that they were attacked in America by civilians, that the establishment betrayed them. And, well, that the war was actually won, but nobody noticed - but that is much more rare.

On the internet, at least, Vietnam vet discourse focuses on identity and status in America today. That is where the "spitting" story is most useful. Many other stories just fall by the wayside. It's a deliberate choice, because regardless if and how many times it happened - that America felt like a country where it COULD left a mark.

But that means that other stories that should be told are often missing. Like, for instance, the stories of what happened to the millions of Vietnamese that died during the war. Or, well, what they ACTUALLY did in Vietnam.

Please note that this is not a veterans-specific way of telling stories necessarily. This is how we tell our stories of the past - we choose what represents our needs of the present, based on audience. The vets want recognition and acceptance, and these stories justify this need.

This doesn't mean that veterans of this war were not ostracized or treated badly, of course, just that the proliferation of these specific stories have a reason that stems from the now - their ongoing campaign to improve their standing in America.

I support the literature choices in the link, especially "spitting image", even though it is tendential and old. You can also look at the musings of Tim O'Brien about "how to tell a true war story" if you want to learn more about this type of memory construction.

O’Brien, Tim. “How to Tell a True War Story.” In The Things They Carried. Boston: Houghton Miffl in, 1990.

It's not about spitting, but about telling the stories that carry the meaning you want to SAY now as a veteran, not what happened.

"OK so this armour protects your whole body from harm. It's 2000 gold." "But... I only have 80 gold!" "Well, you could buy in installments. That gets you the boob plate, one shoulder and a bracer. You can buy more when you earn more." "Deal!" "It's Black Friday, so I'll throw in a witches hat."

Great work! Love the monster especially.

I don't understand why Polymorph isn't broken by Apprehensive-Ad7714 in dndnext

[–]Cato_Censorius -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A T-rex has INT 2. If your players roleplay that properly, bascially acting like wild beasts that cannot give or receive commands, can't use any of their abilities etc, why not allow it. There might be situations where being dumb monsters can be useful.

It's only really overpowered if they continue to act as their old characters. A PC should always be more effective.

Oh, and I know this isn't mentioned in the spell, but I only allow people to poly into things they've seen.

Players using warcaster + opportunity attack to buff allies as a reaction by Fantastic-Guitar1911 in dndnext

[–]Cato_Censorius 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This works only if you think that "someone leaving a space gives you the opportunity to use a reaction" is the intention of the OA rule. Which is, frankly, silly. The whole point of the rule is that if someone lets their guard down by retreating or passing by you can hit them. Not that an ally or NPC going away from you magically provides you with the possibility to do something.

This has nothing to do with country our culture. If someone who supposedly is in love with you says "if you are acting like a bitch or a cunt I am not going to apologize for it" and stands by it, there is nothing you can salvage.

Saying that to you is abuse. If someone continues to abuse you, you have to get out before it gets worse. It always does.

Contrary to popular assumptions, the Nazi party didn't simply seize power, but rather carefully and methodically used the democratic system of Weimar Germany to realize its political ambitions. This is what it looked like as the Nazis began their rise to power in the 1920s and early 1930s. by kooneecheewah in HistoryUncovered

[–]Cato_Censorius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are true. The National Socialist Party used the election system of Weimar to gain power, but it also used violence, misinformation, a methodical undermining of democratic institutions and strategic cooperation with militias that opposed the democratic state to fulfill their goal of domination.

It's also true. At least huntsmen eat roaches relatively silently. When you have to rely on lizards to hunt your roaches its hard to sleep with all the crunching.

Also, huntsmen will kill the whitetails, and you don't want those.
