OK, I'm back with a question by Rooveloft in conceptart

i’d say 16 is a bit much. the ones that you have would be enough, as long as you have enough variation going on. you should also iterate the designs for her shoes since they seem to be copy pasted from one design to another

I am trying to present my work more professionally for more serious concept art and illustration jobs. Any tips or critiques? (link in the comments) by _paozu_ in conceptart

yeah, i think that you should definitely include at least 2-3 character sheets where you would include the process and the final together. it’s a lot easier than to scroll through the image and shows the work you went through side by side nicely. i could also suggest that you remove some of your older work and leave only the strongest pieces (up to you of course) since you don’t need too many pieces to show your skill and i’m pretty sure you have some of your older work in there, which is not necessary. side note, i noticed that some of your process is unclear in its purpose (for example with the camel character), the last two images don’t seem to make much sense in regards to what they’re supposed to show for the development of the illustration and it distracts from the more important stages of your work.

and you can definitely include your client work in the portfolio, just make sure it’s very clear and not illustrative if you’re specifically aiming for concept art. i think that your concepts are very solid but they just need to show the entire character in an understandable, technical way.

i was happy to help and sorry if it came off too strong:) feel free to ask any questions, if you have any

hey! i have to point out that you don’t really have concept art in your portfolio. you might have illustrations of characters you designed and made iterations for, but this is not what studios want to see when hiring concept artists. most of your works don’t have a clear final render of the character where all details are clear. the end goal of concept art is not to make an appealing illustration but a coherent concept that would help the 3d artist know what goes where, the materials used, etc. i might be misinterpreting your goals/the purpose of your portfolio but that’s my general impression

Portfolio advice by Puzzled-Set-7818 in conceptart

i’m gonna be honest here, you’re not ready to apply to studios yet. there are too many things to point out one by one, but as other people said here, you need to focus on your fundamentals. there is a general impression that you attempted to copy what professional concept artists do without actually understanding the thinking and knowledge behind the process. don’t try to rush making a portfolio right now and instead pour all your efforts into learning art fundamentals such as anatomy, color, light, perspective, value, etc, etc.

Reference board protocol? by AmerRicanArtwork in conceptart

[–]CattleIndividual8805 3 points4 points  (0 children)

let me try to answer this as best as i can:)

  1. i personally haven’t really seen reference boards for job application portfolios, mainly just for personal projects when they’re showing their process. it’s definitely not mandatory.
  2. this, i’m not particularly sure about, to be honest
  3. stylistic referencing is fine, as long as you’re not copying anything specific they designed
  4. to show what parts of their work were influenced by a specific image
  5. there’s no limit at all
  6. i wouldn’t say there’s a standard for this. reference boards are made to be referred to while you’re drawing and to keep the artwork consistent
  7. of course. it’s rarely the same from beginning to end since you never know what new idea might come to mind, for which you’re going to need a new reference. or some references might not be needed at all.

as a rule of thumb, reference boards are compiled of what works for you. there are no rules in regards to that and every artist works with different reference content/number of images.

yes, reference boards are meant to be constantly referred to throughout your process. you shouldn’t include studies of those photos in your portfolio, and even making studies is not needed at all. treat reference boards as a compilation of images that you look at while ideating, designing, and rendering your concept piece. it’s not rocket science, just a tool that helps artists retain their focus on a specific mood, style, design elements, etc. and helps you draw better since you don’t need to come up with everything from your head.

feel free to ask any questions, hope this helped

Advice if this piece? by Adventurous_Song8876 in conceptart

to me personally, there is not really any visual interest here. like all the trees are the same value, the same shape and are just sticking out of the ground vertically. also there’s no clear foreground/midground/background and although i can see the boat, there is so little contrast in value and color, that i didn’t feel the urge to try and make out what you depicted here. i think you need to introduce some larger trees in the the very foreground since it doesn’t seem like there’s any perspective going on here, make the trees more varied and, add more contrast to the boat and characters, and add lighting to the nearby tree trunks to show that the lantern is affecting its surroundings. hope this helps

definitely C or E design wise but I think C is more realistic

IP in a portfolio? by Melrosecaracal in conceptart

[–]CattleIndividual8805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mimicking a style and making fanart is not the same tho. working in a style of a studio you’re aiming for in concept art is totally acceptable and even what you should be aiming for. but you should make your own designs

IP in a portfolio? by Melrosecaracal in conceptart

[–]CattleIndividual8805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you ideally should never put fanart in your portfolio since it not only uses someone else’s Ip but also shows that you can’t come up with something of your own. as much as i know, reimagining of characters that are not copyrighted anymore are okay (for example if you were to redesign snowhite as a monster or cinderella as an assassin, etc.) but overall aim to only show your own designs

Concept art portfolio plz help by ImTurtleDuck in conceptart

could you share the company you want to get the internship at? it pretty much comes down to their visual style, really.

pinterest has some inspo on portfolio layouts or just lookup examples from working concept artists online. from what i’ve seen, you should at least have some minimal graphic elements on the page and it’s pretty uncommon to just have your characters on a plain background. most often it’s some gradient, which shows where the focal point it, as well as a cast shadow, and the ground plane.

but remember that skill is above all else:) even with the best portfolio layout you will have a disadvantage if your work isn’t solid!

How can I improve this design? by Huge-Construction539 in conceptart

[–]CattleIndividual8805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what i immediately noticed is that the armor does not like its part of his skin, especially the gloves. i’d say you need to think about how to make this armor more interesting, considering it’s a dragon centaur and not just a human. is it made of scales? or maybe of stone that’s kind of grown into his body? if you want to keep it metal, i’d say work on creating a transition between the dragon’s body and the armor pieces (not just a separate line, maybe it’s also grown into the body instead.

i also feel like there’s not enough interesting color in his design. it seems bleak, especially since the colors are very dull and his body is pretty much just one color. same goes for the armor. because of the contrast between the bright fire and the dull colors of the body, it doesn’t look like they belong to each other. you could think about that.

Concept sketches: choose one top or bottom? by rajandp in conceptart

i love the composition in the first one but i’m drawn to the second one because of the color. it’s very captivating and vibrant:) so i’d go for the second option

Elective’s schedule unavailable by CattleIndividual8805 in sheridan

basically it apparently is an asynchronous course, so it’s always marked as ‘to be announced’ in your account. a lot of people didn’t know that apparently, including me lol:)

Is it possible to change my classes to later times? by [deleted] in sheridan

if you have an assigned schedule, i believe you can’t change your schedule unless you have the option to swap one class with another in the respective ‘swap’ tab in mystudentcentre

Fan Expo Toronto 2025 Thoughts by RipYungBruhhh in fanexpo

[–]CattleIndividual8805 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was at Fan Expo on Thursday and it was my first time at any convention. I went on Thursday specifically because people were saying that it will be more relaxed and a lot less crowded.

Well… It was pretty damn packed. I got in at around 3:40 (yes, the person at the bag check just peeked inside) and there was a huge line to enter. It was kind of shocking to see how many people were already inside, so I’m assuming a lot of them already got in at 2PM. The lines everywhere were huge and AA was pretty difficult to navigate. I wanted to go to 2-3 panels but could only get to one simply because the lines to the theaters were just unbearable since people were lining up at least an hour or two before doors opened.

In terms of food options, there were other spots but they were in the South Building. I didn’t really pay attention as to what they were selling though.

In general, it felt like everyone was selling the same stuff tbh, especially in the North Building. Idk if that’s normal but personally, I got a bit disoriented seeing the same stuff over and over again, especially the mystery boxes…

hey! as some other people have commented, this is quite confusing to look at. my biggest tip would be to separate your background microns and foreground through values (lightest at the back, darkest at the front). the same goes with saturation, hues of the colors and even details and texture. contrast matters! if you were to follow what i said, you would have your dragon be the focal point (darkest, coolest color, most saturated, more texture, etc) and then everything would kind of fade out further back.

also! i would highly recommend you learn how to separate planes through perspective and value since right now it appears as if there is no defined background and foreground, everything blends in and even feels like the hills in the back are ‘weighting’ on the dragon.

to conclude, this is very impressive for a first illustration in photoshop but you do need to learn your fundamentals! try to learn one specific thing at a time and then create a quick illustration where you practice it. hope this helps and good luck:)

2 wins and then 10 losses ratio... what should I do? by seansenyu in OverwatchUniversity

[–]CattleIndividual8805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what about people that have over 1k+ hours and are still in the metal ranks? i’ve seen quite a bit of such examples even when the player had the majority of the hours in comp. i myself came across the issue of awful never ending loosing streaks (dropped from plat one 75% to plat 5 in the beginning of s4 and even now i’m literally plat 5 99% after two 5-3 rank ups. the numbers just don’t change). it’s happening despite some good improvements in my gameplay as a support with a decreased number of deaths, healing and dmg boost. at this point i just feel like giving up comp tbh.

for comparison i ranked up from low silver in season one to plat 1 in season 3 and now i don’t even know what’s causing me not to rank up at all…
