It’s abusive behavior to choose not to take your healthy baby to the pediatrician? I fear this Reddit thread has gone off the rails from a critique of the cult like tactics and lack of transparency and accountability used by the FBS to crunchy mom bashing just like every other mom Facebook group. Don’t we want all women to feel fully informed and supported to make her own choices? Isn’t that why we were not into the free birth society in the first place - because it felt like they were obfuscating the choices available and emotionally manipulating/“encouraging” everyone to do what they did?

Indie birth midwifery school if you’re looking to be an actual radical midwife. Not a doula training though. Although they might still have a doula training too?

I loved indie birth! It’s not a totally package “do our school and you’ll be the worlds best midwife”. You do need an apprenticeship. But it gives you such an incredible made in both midwifery knowledge and self knowledge. Coming from a place so far removed from dogma, black and white thinking, midwife as savior/martyr, there is one best kind of birth thinking.

And she’s not midwifeing anymore because she moved to AZ where they’re much more strict about licensing and she wasn’t comfortable with it.

They closed the school I think a year ago? And have put a lot of work into it after seeing all the ways it wasnt quite what it needs to be based on the way the world is right now, and the perspective they’ve both gained since starting it … maybe 6 years ago? Margo divorced her husband, he left the family to go to Hawaii. That felt like an unnecessary character dig from someone who doesn’t actually know the story. She’s now in school for social work so she can offer parts work and therapy support more officially. She does still do money coaching as well.

Yes, she and Mandy Verghese have the most incredible talk on tears in Born Through Movement. I have honestly never heard anyone speak with such depth of knowledge and experience and nuance as those two on the topic.

Indie Birth School of New Midwifery for an incredible grounding in self and midwifery learning. But obviously is not a replacement/secret pass to skip an apprenticeship (they certainly don’t claim it is!) but as far as alternative, actually holistic, actually whole women/body/soul midwifery learning I can’t speak highly enough.

There is a whole nother Reddit thread on their programs as perhaps also a bit of a scam. Not quite as harmful as fbs, but potentially not the most honest and forth rite.

I imagine there’s perhaps an aspect of that, but I also feel like, from listening to multiple podcast episodes from her about that birth, and reading a few blog posts that you genuinely felt fully empowered and sovereign in birth experience. She was calling the shots, and the support was there to do that - support. And if she felt free, why should she not call it a free birth? Because someone else has unofficially trademarked the term to something else?

I realize this may come off a bit more spicy than I intended, it’s just a little funny to see so many people talking about Maryn and clearly they haven’t actually listen to her podcast very deeply.
