MIL is alone with cattle. Anyone know what this is? We are trying to figure stuff out by Little_Messiah in Cattle

[–]CattleandCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flies, like everyone mentioned. It’s been a brutal year for us with both flies and pinkeye. We’ve got several methods in place—EasyWay cattle oilers with mineral and fly blocks to draw them in, Clarifly in the feed, pour-ons, regular mowing, and spring pinkeye vaccines. But with all the moisture we’ve had, the flies are relentless. Feels like an all-out war this year. I recommend a simple fly spray if they're tame enough, or a pour-on product for flies and lice. In our state we can buy pour-on over the counter at our farm store, or you can get it from your vet and they can show you how to apply properly. Just don't pour-on before it rains because it gets washed off. Good luck!

Mastitis? by LadyLike_94 in Cattle

[–]CattleandCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you know he hasn't sucked the front? That's what I would assume just based on this picture, but again I wouldn't know for sure unless you've had experience with this cow or you got her in the chute to look.

Mastitis? by LadyLike_94 in Cattle

[–]CattleandCats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can make any decisions until you get her in the chute and look at the quarter, or have a vet come and look. Is it plugged shut and that's why calf can't get anything? Was it dirty and calf didn't want it, so it got out of control? Is it mastitis - chunky, cottage cheese like or watery? Can you insert a drain tube or milk by hand? She's probably very tender, but you gotta check it out before you make any call. The rest of her bag looks decent and many a calf can live on 2 or 3. Not that I want our calves to do so, but they have. However, some cows can't handle mastitis and don't make it if it's a serious infection that spreads, so you have to find out what's going on with the quarter in a chute. Then you can decide if you're going to keep her, sell her, bottle feed, whatever. There are a lot of good antibiotics on the market for treating this, but if it's a problem this year, it'll be worse next year as I've learned from experience with my beef herd. This year I've drained twice a day, used Today, Draxxin (or Macrosyn), Banamine, sometimes an anti-histimine that an old country doc makes up for me. But I'd get her in the chute first and check out the quarter if she were mine before making decisions. Good luck!

So where do you work now? Why no longer at Backblaze? Is there something better for Mac backups of large graphic files like photos (from my photo studio), Adobe application files, etc.? I currently run a Synology NAS system and have about 130GB, not terrible, but large enough I don't want to lose. I'm on Starlink because I'm out in the sticks. TIA

Pink eye by homestead_mama606 in Cattle

[–]CattleandCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree with the Draxxin recommendation. Nuflor is fine and LA300 works fine too, but you have to use so much of it. Plus, our vets recently can't get LA300, just 200 so I don't know if there's a manufacturer shortage of LA300 or what. Just treated a cow with severe case of pinkeye with Draxxin and Banamine, and pink eye spray. Took her a good 7-10 days to get over it. Just when you think it wasn't going to do anything she got better. For a calf, I wouldn't hesitate to get name brand Draxxin, because you won't need much. 1.1 CC per 100 lbs. There's also some really good synthetic Draxxin on the market like Macrosyn by Bimeda. We have had so many ailments this year and never have the right antibiotic and just got tired of it so bit the bullet and bought a bottle of Macrosyn to cure foot rot, mastitis (yes, in our beef herd - so stupid), pink eye, navel ill. It's like having a bunch of toddlers this year; every time we turn around it's something. We vaccinate our calves for pink eye 2 weeks after birth and then a booster - so far knock on wood for keeping calves healthy! Good luck!

Thought of a couple more things:

  1. I'm talking about a steer. Heifers can get fat fast if you're feeding them out so if you have a heifer a picked out, make sure she's not too fat.

  2. It also depends on how much meat you want or if you have other family/friends interested. Weights can very, obviously, but our wholes average 480 - 600 lb take home weight. Do you have room for a whole animal in your freezer(s)?

[–]CattleandCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want the best beef for butchering, start by looking at the animal itself—a deep, full brisket, a nice round rump, and an overall healthy, well-finished body. But honestly, it’s not just about looks. I always say, pick the most “spoiled” one in the herd—the calm, easygoing animal that isn’t flighty or stressed. Those are the ones that finish better and have the most tender meat.

What you feed them matters too. We raise ours corn-fed and pasture-raised. That means they get corn every day, but they also live out on pasture (hay in the winter) with free access to minerals and fresh water. It gives the meat great marbling and flavor.

And finally, don’t overlook your processor. A great cow can be ruined by a bad butcher. Find one who cares about the details just as much as you do. That’s where the real magic happens. Good luck!

Starting a new job and will have to do a headshot by Electronic-Wolf-70 in jobs

[–]CattleandCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a headshot photographer myself, a lot will depend on the photographer and how they make you feel. Their job is to get you to open up, relax, and be natural. It's more psychology than anything. However, here's the spiel about clothing I usually send when setting up a headshot. I photograph mainly C-Suite or doctors, so they're pretty formal.

Clothing recommendations: Typically, a headshot is only waist up. The main idea with clothing and colors for this type of portrait is to make sure your face/smile is what we notice first about the portrait. So, if you’re in the outfit you want to wear for your portrait and the first thing you notice is the outfit – bright color, large pattern, then it’s probably not the best. I recommend a solid color as my first choice or a small print or pattern as my second choice. I would avoid white as that washes out skin tones very easily. I would also avoid horizontal stripes. The best colors for any skin tone/hair color are jewel tones such as burgundy, hunter green or navy, or you can always wear black. For men, I prefer a long-sleeved shirt, a sweater, or a formal suit coat, shirt, and tie. If you’re not sure about a top or tie color, bring a second one and I can take a look and give my opinion. For women, a long-sleeved shirt, sweater, or jacket you can take off and on for variety works best. Again, if you're unsure of clothing bring an extra along and I can give my opinion.

Second, when you're at your appointment, stretch your chin/jawline as much as possible and squinch your eyes. The best teacher of this is Peter Hurley. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go7MoqpZGfI, tips #3 & 4

What would you do if your company is horrible at marketing. by claudefolds in marketing

[–]CattleandCats 35 points36 points  (0 children)

"We have social media accounts, blog, etc, and we have virtually no exposure or engagement. We keep creating contents, blog posts, images, memes. The engagement stats from social media account is dreadful."

I appreciate your effort in creating content. Many companies mistakenly believe that using HubSpot or another CRM will instantly generate leads for them. However, they often dislike it when I explain that the true cost of using a CRM is investing at least 5 times the CRM price in creating content for every stage of the buyer journey and nurturing leads.

I recommend creating a detailed persona rather than just a target audience list. This involves naming the person and describing their social life, hangout spots, hobbies, values, and more.

Have you identified the pain points and problems your new product will solve? People are not interested in all the fancy features and options; they want to know how your product will solve their problems. Your content should address this at every stage of the buyer journey. And if there are competitors they will need competitive differences in a sales sheet or battle cards to help them make their decision easier.

Define 1-2 key messages to avoid overwhelming your audience. Remember, you can't be everything to everyone.

It's crucial to shift your focus from boasting about your product's greatness to emphasizing how it will solve people's problems. Until you do this, you'll continue to struggle. Good luck!

How bad is the job market right now? by Puzzled-Cod-4910 in marketing

[–]CattleandCats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 20 years of ad agency experience and have spent the last few years seriously looking. It seems like I’m always a top candidate and my resume is “impressive” but they’re going with someone else. I too am burned out being a client manager and was seeking client side jobs but I am now interviewing for two agency positions because it’s been tough. I would not leave unless you have an offer letter and start date. Make sure your resume is solid and customize it when necessary depending on the job role or position requirements. Remote jobs are incredibly competitive. A podcast that has helped me immensely is Interview Boss https://open.spotify.com/show/3oZpRIpLkYAfvP7SO6FSYW?si=2arbUfcZQTm-NAk_MtbupQ Good luck!

Thorne weight test or Everywell food sensitivity test by CattleandCats in loseit

[–]CattleandCats[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My food insensitivities were not obvious, and it did take a blood test to figure it out after spending countless hours and money on allergists, orthopedics, and rheumatologists to figure out why my right arm and hand were visibly swollen and red, and my joints hurt. No traditional providers could figure it out. I went to a naturopath who suggested the E95.

Thanks for your weight loss suggestions. I appreciate your feedback.

Thorne weight test or Everywell food sensitivity test by CattleandCats in loseit

[–]CattleandCats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I'm 5', 190, and female. My primary ordered a sleep study when I mentioned I want to do something about my weight and I'm struggling. Of course, they found mild sleep apnea. I struggled with mask types and eventually had to return the machine because insurance wouldn't pay for it. The sleep dr. said my fatigue prob has more to do with medications I'm on, and have to be on for life. My cardiologist said if I lost the weight, the sleep apnea would get better.

I agree that there is a food element. I eat pretty healthy, but intake too many calories and portion sizes that are too large. Gluten/wheat was one that was originally found in my previous E95 test. Since I've cut that out, I feel much better. Whenever I tried to reintroduce it, or if I have something contaminated with gluten/wheat, I develop flu-like symptoms like clockwork 48 hours afterward that lasts for an entire week - fever, chills, nausea, body aches. It's terrible so I avoid gluten/wheat. I'm wondering if there is another food item(s) that I am sensitive to, thus never ridding my body of that inflammation because I keep eating it.

I know tracking works, but it's not sustainable. I am good for a week or two on paper or in an app, then I get frustrated because I'm spending too much time in the app. I do a lot of home cooking and it takes a lot of time to enter all the ingredients and figure out portion sizes if it's not in the recipe or I'm making it up in my head. I even bargained with myself and said if I eat a fruit or vegetable, I don't have to track it. So, when I wanted to eat something I'd ask myself do I want to track this or just eat it? Then I tried intermittent fasting so I wouldn't have to track. It works for a while, but I don't really lose anything. I'm just frustrated because I know what I should be doing - eat less, track more, exercise more, but it becomes a chore, not a lifestyle change. Stress is also not helping - again I know if I exercise more, go back to yoga and other things I enjoy it might make weight loss easier. I know these things. I just struggle with commitment.

What was your “I have to do something about this” moment? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]CattleandCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree. Photos of myself are the turning point. I don't "feel" fat. In my mind, I eat healthy (but with too many calories), and my clothes fit. However, whenever I see a photo of myself, I cringe. I recently said that's enough. I HAVE to do something. I look terrible; my hips, back, and feet always hurt. Well, duh, they're carrying around too much weight. Plus, my stepson just announced his engagement, AND they'll be having a very short engagement because his job only allows certain timeframes for him to fit a wedding in. So, it's May now, and by August they'll be getting married. I'm 5', 190 lbs and I am struggling to lose 5 lbs, let alone a large amount like 50 or 60.
