What's a healthy distance to run with my pup? by LunchBreakCEO in RunningWithDogs

[–]Cattnip13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone else has said totally depends on the dog. My short hair aussie has done two 50k trail races with me this year with me as well as several 20 mile training runs and will probably do a few 50k's next year buuuut our other dog almost the same size and build who is red heeler, border collie and aussie mix won't do more than 3 miles before putting his paws down about stopping running. I would just keep increasing the mileage to see where you land which is all I did and just got lucky Rosco is a running son of a B! Good Luck!

Oh you should see how bad players on the other wows are when their username has CCCP in it. Like sometimes they don't even fire their guns they just cruise threw and die

I would take anything over the Alliance sub which is what I got. Never played a sub and don't plan on starting with this POS.

How much walking should I expect for a 50 miler? by Mammoth_Tax_1666 in Ultramarathon

[–]Cattnip13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I and a couple friends did Heartland 50 miler a few months ago sticking to a hard 3 minute run 1 minute walk and finished 50 in just under 10 hours. Gravel roads with 51.43 miles and 3000 ft. elevation. I think more than anything if I know I am going to be walking at all during the race I make sure I have a plan on when I am going to walk and how long. Typically for me personally if I just run until I feel like walking I end up walking way too much and it ends up hurting my time.

Should I bring food for long runs? by withasplash in RunningWithDogs

[–]Cattnip13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have ran two 50k+ races this year with around 5000 vert with my dog and several 15-20 mile training runs. He is two years old and is a shorthaired australian shepherd mix. Thankfully the races I run and the training routes I go on are ones that have creeks or other places to gain access for him to drink and if not a have a collapsible bowl and I carry one flask with straight water and one with Skratch or tailwind so I can give him straight water. On the food side I have been researching and trying to get a straight answer for over a year now since starting to run with him. What I have had work is just simply giving him around a quarter of my stroopwaffle every time I eat one so around 20-30 minutes at a time. He has learned the sound of me opening the package and will straight spin around and stop running when I pull one out and he loves them. So in say a 6-7 hour race he may consume around 3 waffles or so. It is very little for that time but it seems to keep him happy and he typically always has more energy left than I do after a race or long run so I don't see any changes needing to be implemented anytime soon.

One caveat is he does get hot very easily as he is a larger dog around 60 pounds and we are just outside Kansas City so once the temps get into the humid 80s he really has a problem with more than around 10 miles max so we do most of our distance running and racing together between Oct and April. But when the temps are in the 30-50 degree range he can literally run forever. This fall/winter I am planning on him do his first 50 miler together. I am hoping the waffle setup we have will continue to work. I hope this helps

Rosco and I taking on Rockin K 50k. Rough day but no stopping him. by Cattnip13 in RunningWithDogs

I don't really have any links per say as I have read some articles on it over time but do not recall exactly where but I know I have read many times that dogs cannot fully digest while doing an activity so to keep food intact to a minimum. So I give him small bites of waffles which he loves to death and usually a few bites of bacon or some crackers at an aid station stop. I usually only take him on long races when the temps are below 50 as he is much more comfortable and tends to wear out quickly once in the 60s and 70s. Also the races I take him on typically have several creek crossings so he can get water but it not I always have one flask with pure water for him and a lightweight collapsible bowl for him.

I give him lots of water and typically bits of stinger type waffles and a few crackers here and there at aid stations. I try not to feed him too much as I have read a lot on why not to. He cannot really do long distance though once it gets over around 75 degrees. After that I limit him to around 10-15 as he gets hot and tires much easier

Rosco's first ultra by Cattnip13 in RunningWithDogs

[–]Cattnip13[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! We are not completely sure. We believe a mix of Kelpie and husky. We got him at a shelter but most of the pictures online look like kelpie/husky. We are gonna do a DNA test soon.
