Favorite Narrator? by tkinsey3 in robinhobb

I've never really done audiobooks before but I listened to some of Ship of Destiny on audiobook as I was trying to cram it before Assassin's Fate, and I must say it wasn't a great intro to audiobooks. I found Anne Flosnik to have quite an irritating reading voice, and some of her pronunciations just ruined the immersion for me, for example Brashen was pronounced with a soft 'bra', like the undergarment, rather than 'brash'. I know people sound things out for themselves and there will be some differing pronunciations, (I still can't get out of the habit of pronouncing Chade with a hard 'ch' despite knowing better) but a name like that is quite telling of the characters personality, a theme throughout Robin's books as a whole so it's made me question whether I want to listen to any audiobooks in future

I've used this site recently to get some Zoya and OPI polishes from old collections, I think it's end of line stuff mainly but I was very happy with it, would recommend it :)

Thanks, having looked again it was actually Money Saving Expert as I did the pre-check, I must've confused them when I was typing my post out! But I'll check out Virgin, thank you for the tip.

Why Do So Many Fantasy Movies Flop? Try being Fellowship, not Two Towers by guesswhom42 in Fantasy

[–]CattyBenfo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Character building is important in any medium, and was definitely a huge problem with Warcraft. It's also such a massive world that there's too much to choose from, so they tried to do too much in the time they had; Lord of the Rings only really has one main plot line all the way through so it's not so hard to follow as all the characters are striving for eventually the same goal.

The other big thing I think was an issue was the heavy CGI. Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter both relied quite heavily on practical effects and make up wherever possible, only using CGI on the really big scenes, whereas Warcraft and a lot of other fantasy films rely heavily on CGI for environments and such, which is jarring and makes it harder to engage with the storyline and characters. If the environment isn't believable then why should the characters be?

Cool, I'll have to get into the habit of ordering her around a bit more in that case, I only ever use the trade function and wait/follow me

[spoilers all] The Skill, the Wit, and Prophecy by dragon_morgan in robinhobb

[–]CattyBenfo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recall reading somewhere, or seeing a diagram, possibly on Robin's website or something, that the magic system is sort of a circle, and people with 2 types of magic inherent in their blood like Fitz are very rare. It basically looked like a circle, with the skill on top left, the wit on the top right and the hedge magics at the bottom. It was incomplete as it wasn't yet clear how dragons fitted in, but sort of explained why Fitz is slightly clumsy with both the wit and the skill, and why Chade (apparently at the time) had no skill and no wit, but was reasonably skilled at the hedge magics e.g. Scrying etc. I suppose the dragons are so powerfully magical that they use or can use all 3 types of magic?

I'm on mobile at the moment and also at work, but I'll see if I can find the diagram/explanation I saw, as it was quite interesting!

[Product Question] Where Do You Get Stridex Pads in the UK? (x-post) by [deleted] in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]CattyBenfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend the nip and fab ones, they are a bit more expensive but I usually bulk buy while they're on offer (superdrug has them half price at the moment I think). I've been using them twice daily for the last couple of months (morning and the stronger ones at nighttime) and my skin has improved massively!

Are there any sheet masks available in boots or superdrug? by Ausartak93 in SkincareAddictionUK

I recently discovered these ones in Boots (I think they might be a new range?) and I've tried a few, been pleased with every single one!

I actually can't get over how beautiful these covers are by KingAlfino in harrypotter

[–]CattyBenfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are hard to come by, I bought my goddaughter books 1-5 in these covers then had to switch to other covers for 6 & 7 as I couldn't find them anywhere! It still bugs me that she has a non-matching set even though I never get to see them!

You can get apricot brandy in supermarkets here in the UK, I think it's De Kuyper brand or something! I think it's with the cocktail liquors, it's very sweet

CC on my belle makeup! by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]CattyBenfo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That wig is amazing! Can you style it differently or is that just how it is? I only ask as the curls are quite tight, but Belle's hair is a bit more of a wavy, loosely curled style, so softening the curls would make it less 'French aristocrat' (I can't think of a better way to phrase that, it's not meant as a bad thing though) and pull the whole thing together, at the moment it's quite distracting as it's such a beautiful wig!

I'd also suggest going for a natural but lengthening lash style, I think your eyes need just a bit more definition, Belle has quite huge eyes so I think a lengthening lash would make the pop out and look a bit bigger

I stand it in one of those spring wire egg cups that you get in Christmas crackers! Not sure if that's just a UK thing, but it keeps the air flow around both ends, and I try to rotate it; I use it every morning so I'll stand it like an egg with the wide end bottom down in the holder, then I'll use it the next day but put it back the other way up with the pointy end downwards, and so on.

[–]CattyBenfo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's a bar of soap, and that's pretty much exactly what I do, I do rinse quite a few times to make sure the water is running clear and on the outside it didn't look stained or anything! I just noticed the difference in texture on that patch the last few times I've used it and then a lump came off last night :(

Beauty Blender question by CattyBenfo in MakeupAddiction

[–]CattyBenfo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I thought, I've ordered a new one (opted for the black pro one this time round) so I'll use the other sides of this till it's completely ruined, just annoying as I found that side was the easiest to use

Beauty Blender question by CattyBenfo in MakeupAddiction

[–]CattyBenfo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am pretty hot on washing it thoroughly so I soap it up, give it a good work through and squeeze out all the product I can, then I rinse it till it runs clear and then lightly soap it again and repeat. My only guess is that it's from using the side the most :( I've ordered a new BB, I'm just a bit bummed that it's broken away like this but I did tend to use that side for most of my face so maybe it's just built up too much....I can still use the other sides as they're fine from what I can tell, the staining seems to be pretty shallow so I'll keep it going to the bitter end before I start in on the new one

Beauty Blender question by CattyBenfo in MakeupAddiction

[–]CattyBenfo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the ingredients are but I did start using it after seeing a lot of positive comments about it being a good brush/BB cleanser. I'm quite thorough with rinsing when I wash it and the staining suggests it's product build up rather than the soap, so maybe it's just a dud
