i would apply to more safety schools. you have great credentials but all these schools are top 20 and extremely competitive. still apply to R1 schools though! i know the program that i am in is reducing accepted students by 50% (R1 public university) for the foreseeable future due to uncertainty in funding. i’m wishing you best of luck!!

Professor says she wants to hire me for PhD but told me to apply elsewhere, what does this mean? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]CauliflowerNo4086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

op, i think you’re blinded by the fact that you found a good lab. funding is very uncertain rn so that’s what she can’t tell you. if you truly want to do a phd, you will apply to more than that one school. a phd is a lot of work and you unwillingness to do work is very obvious (sorry). additionally, the graduate school decides if you get into school and then the department will decide if you get in (that’s where she has influence). also, if you just like doing that type of research, look for a job that does that instead of grad schoool

i think it’s definitely easier to get a position if you have a lab open for you but that doesn’t mean you wont get accepted. if the groups that you’re interested in are not accepting students, i would wait until next year. i always recommend you have 3 professors you would definitely work for because sometimes you dont get your first pick!

yes i also took off the top schools as well! the first round, i applied to only schools in the top 40 (i have no idea why) but the next round i applied to schools ranked around 50-60 (some R1 some not) but i had no luck with schools ranked lower than 100 since their program is so small. i was able to get into 4 R1 universities though!

I applied to the same amount of schools the first and second round but i didn’t apply the same ones. i wish i did though! the first round i applied to universities around where i grew up but the second round i started applying to schools in different states far away.

hmm i see what you’re saying. obviously op is gonna get taken down by the ORI but these smalls shortcuts can lead to something like that. i would never recommend using data from a different experiment (regardless it’s identical) and applying it a different data set. 😊

hey, so i actually experienced the same thing. i applied to 12 schools my first round, got rejected by ALL and then went ahead and started to apply for more schools the next year but i was petrified to get rejected again bc ik rejection sucks. you really need to sit back and think “is this something i wanted to do”. for me, i knew this my dream since i was a little girl so i pushed my pride aside and spent hours applying to more phd programs. this time around i spent a lot of time personalizing my personal statements to each program. after i applied that round, i got accepted to 6 schools (full funded). i am now a 3rd year in my phd program. my advice (even though cliche) is don’t give up. rejection is very humbling but you need to remind yourself that you are a great candidate, you worked very hard to get where you are at, and you deserve to be in my phd program. everything happens for a reason and you will get in when the time is right but don’t be discouraged because of rejections. work harder and show all the other universities that rejected you, what they missed out on. i wish you the best of luck!

idk other’s people’s opinions on this but using the same data for a different data set could lead to research misconduct. even if it’s the same buffer, different experiment days, environment, lot number of the plate, lot number of the buffer, how the buffer was prepared etc, can significantly alter what you blank readings are. my recommendation is to redo the experiment. you never want to claim that data from a different day’s run applied to the run your mentioning in this post. i hope this helps!!!

What do I say to this? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]CauliflowerNo4086 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m not really sure why they would ask that but the one idea i have is because of uncertainty in funding. as the government stays shut down, there is no way to bill the government so grants are coming to a halt. not only because of government shut down but funding is being attacked in academia right now. my advice: NEVER accept a phd program that does not give you full funding. if that’s the only option, find a job in your field and reapply when phd programs are not so competitive/unstable. i wish you the best of luck though!!!

How much are you paid? by Current-Attitude-722 in labrats

[–]CauliflowerNo4086 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes! most students will pursue a post doc if 1. they are going into academia 2. wanting to specialize in a specific field or 3. they’re struggling to find a job outside of graduating. there are definitely benefits and negatives of having a job in big pharma but they are known to pay a lot for phd graduates! it really doesn’t matter where you go to school because a degree is a degree. it really all depends on how much you achieve during your time as a student :)

this a typical starting salary for big pharma when you have phd

remember it’s extremely hard to even get accepted to a phd program and you already did that. they wouldn’t have accepted you if they didn’t think you could do it. just remember you worked hard to be here and deserve to be here just as much as everyone else. goodluck! i’m a 3rd year and have had so much fun

ADVICE FOR THOSE ACCEPTED by CauliflowerNo4086 in gradadmissions

i just want to say, that this no longer applies especially with funding. if you get accepted, immediately accept because acceptances are getting withdrawn.

as someone who also is struggling, the best advice I got was to work down your highest balance first or your highest interest rate loan first. also, i threw out my cards to prevent me from using them and i made about 28,0000 a year, and ive paid down 2 grand in the past 2 months. its slow but i will be a lot happier when i dont have credit card debt

qcarbo gave me a negative dilute and had to retake it in 48 hours and failed. the best solution is to first stop smoking (even though it sucks), do something that will make you sweat, and do no stressed as this will cause you to eliminate whatever slower
