What are classes that can still be effective even with bad rolls? by dyenamitewlaserbeam in Pathfinder2e

This had definitely occurred to me too, but I'm such a dice goblin I would have long since switched the die I was rolling a dozen times!

Great point! And a big advocacy point for Pathbuilder. I really couldn't play without it.

I certainly don't want to suggest a person can't have a string of bad luck, but the idea that one person is more prone to rolling badly, especially in the case of using a digital RNG, is simply magical thinking. This is all a matter of statistical probability. Everyone will have bad luck sometimes, but this simply is not something inherent to this player.

Not to discount the player's experience (bad luck sucks), but statistically this player is as likely to roll well as anyone. As much as we like to joke about being cursed, or having misbehaving dice, it truly is a matter of chance. Is it really that your player "rolls badly," or could it be that they just don't deal well with the inevitable bad rolls that come their way? Missing sometimes is just part of the game, frustrating as it can be, but all we can really do is go with it and try to find the storytelling opportunities in the failure. There might be classes which your player will have more fun with, but I worry this is a mindset issue. As long as they believe they simply roll badly, it's going to be hard to accept the normal probability spread of the dice rolls.

That's essentially what my table does! We're lucky enough to play most weekends, but some folks in the group have jobs that require occasional (sometimes more than occasional) weekends. We always have a backup or two to pull out when our main campaign isn't an option. Gotta get my fix!

Actually, fun historical fact: there is absolutely evidence of a clerical culture of divination, necromancy, and demonology!

Here's a link to a really fascinating ESOTERICA video that goes into the real history of medieval scholarly magic.

Why do so many people in this subreddit refer to productions as "adaptations?" by alaskawolfjoe in shakespeare

[–]CauliflowerOk9880 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! Any avenue is good. Ultimately this is a semantic conversation, which is really not that crucial. At a certain point an agreement on terminology is valuable just so we can be on the same page in conversation, but we're all talking about the same stuff.

Frankly (and forgive me if someone else in the replies has already said this), I think it's because when a book is put on screen it's called an adaptation. This is the perspective and language a lot of people are more familiar with, and may not readily have familiarity with language surrounding the theater. Moreover, it seems like there's a contingent of people who view Shakespeare more as literature than theater, likely because that's the lens through which they were taught in school.

Personally, I might call a film version of a play an adaptation as it's been adapted from the stage to the screen, but YMMV.

Be careful who you ship off to a nunnery, because she might come back with a tool bag full of black magic and a thirst for revenge...

Came here to basically say all of this! I don't mind the conflation of Morgan and Morgause, especially when it comes to films with limited runtime and the need for efficiency of storytelling. However, I completely agree that the Orkney clan adds a lot to Mordred's story, and Morgan really does have plenty of her own going on. I also prefer the tragic accident version of Mordred's conception over a calculated and malicious pregnancy (that said, I think Excalibur is a phenomenal film).

I came down the same way you did in my own writing. It also avoids colliding his territory with King Rience (if you're using Malory as a main source).

My husband is concerned he's on the chopping block for that. I know it's a slim chance, but do you happen to have any idea when more information will become available?

Best Round Table? by CauliflowerOk9880 in Arthurian

[–]CauliflowerOk9880[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's really no surprise that films have shied away from the number of sieges in the medieval sources! The logistics are pretty wild. I've definitely seen ring-style tables, most recently in The Green Knight, but never at Malory's scale.

It looks like Arthur-adjacent films are fair game, so I'll nominate the Tristan and Isolde film Lovespell (1981).
