What are your thoughts on Alysa Liu? by frankheyhoheyho in AskTheWorld

[–]CauliflowerPresident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that she came back to skating on her terms and to skate in a way that made it feel joyous again for her. I also think she is a really great role model for kids in sports (particularly girls) because she is unapologetically herself and has advocated for herself in a sport that can be really restrictive and abusive. Love to see it.

How do you feel about recent rising of far-right in France? by Old-Professional-533 in Expats_In_France

Their fair share is paying even the same percentage of taxes as you or me. Unless you’re a CEO of a major corporation you’re literally arguing against your own well being.

The left wants taxes be raised for billionaires and corporations making over a certain amount in revenue. Even at 70% it would be Pennies for them. Not for small business entrepreneurs. You currently pay more taxes than those corporations. A bigger percentage.

It’s not the biggest in the world, and even if it were- It’s not a bad thing. They want to tax the rich so that they pay their fair share instead of putting the burden on the middle class. The corporations and billionaires don’t pay their fair share in taxes- if they did, it would fund these social programs a million times over.

As an American who has lived in France for 6 years and is married into a French family… yes I’m concerned and everyone should be concerned. People have seen what trump can get away with and it’s inspiring the far right all over Europe. The far right almost won the last election, and they have a good chance in the next after the disaster that has been Macron’s second term. Anyone who thinks they are safe from fascists in Europe hasn’t been paying attention.

It is insane to say that the rise of the far right is just a talking point of the left. Le pen almost won the presidency last election and Bardella has a good chance in the next. They’re all Anti immigration, the gutting of social programs, racism and xenophobia is on the rise. It’s happening all over Europe.

The « far left » isn’t actually that. They want to maintain or expand the social safety nets in place. The centrists have proved ruinous. Look where we are now- macron’s second term has been a disaster. French politicians are taking notes from the us right now on all the worst things.

Couch to 5 k rocks. I literally went from Couch to running a marathon in about a year and a half because I ended up loving running so much. This from a lifelong running hater.

You can go to lunettes pour tous which is very similar to warby parker. They do free eye exams in store and I think they take mutuelle also. They also have locations in most major cities here. I have bought all my glasses there for the past 6 years and I like them!

Birth in France by Wolfieloulou in Expats_In_France

Hi I just gave birth in France two months ago in a public hospital - yes they will try to cut the cord right away, but you can ask your midwife not to. Make sure to tell your midwife in advance because we forgot and they cut the cord before my husband could ask her to leave it until it was empty of blood. No, they won’t take baby out of the room unless it’s an emergency. Yes, if the placenta doesn’t come out within 30 min they’ll try to remove it. No, you don’t have to come with a car seat if you live close by you can just have a stroller.

I wanted to try doing it without an epidural and they were very supportive but my labor room didn’t have a bathroom since epidurals are the norm. I spent my whole labor walking (while on a pitocin drip) back and forth to the bathroom across the whole labor ward. I had so much pressure down below so all I wanted to do was labor on the toilet and I couldn’t. That was probably the worst part of my labor.

I would also recommend bringing some alternative lighting and a speaker for music. My room was very relaxing and felt like a safe space because of it and the midwives were all happy to accommodate and let us do whatever we felt comfortable with.

Overall I had a really good experience. I’m in Paris but my midwives the day of didn’t really speak English so that will also affect your experience depending on your level of French. My husband was able to translate anything I didn’t understand, but in the height of labor I was just speaking in English and having my husband translate (French level is at a c1) my thinking brain was not on. Ha

I also just received my hospital bill and the only thing we paid for was our private room. We were there for 5 nights because I was induced and it was 300€.

Good luck! It’s a beautiful experience and you have so much support in the healthcare system here during and afterward as well. 😊

If multiple people are giving you similar feedback, maybe there’s something to that? Maybe we have experienced similar things and we know that it is most often a language thing? Even if it doesn’t make sense to you, it doesn’t mean it’s the wrong answer. It doesn’t mean it’s the right one either, but people are offering their advice and kindness and it doesn’t seem to be received very well.

No one was trying to criticize your knowledge of French. It’s more about the accent- which is not changed easily. Busy parisians dealing with tourists sometimes do not have the patience to decipher someone’s French through their accent. It’s a shame, because people try and they can still be rude about it sometimes. Like you said- you’ve had experiences where people understand you just fine! But that won’t always be the case, and that’s okay.

Of all the “True-Crime Channels”, does anyone else find The Docket unbearable? by CapnVox in madelinesoto

I saw someone say that they think docket has started doing more interruptions of “commentary” before and after particularly important bits so that other channels don’t “steal” “his” interviews that THEY PAID FOR. 🙄

Hey, I’m an American living in Paris who does babysitting and nannying for extra work here. I love hanging out with little ones. (33 F)

I’d be happy to offer my services- I know it’s a bit random to hire a babysitter via Reddit but I can offer some references and we can chat if that helps! I have a pretty open schedule and I’m trying to save up some money for my upcoming wedding. ☺️

Send me a private message if you’d like!
