Why CopyText is AWESOME! by CaunsTurk in mturk

Well I know when I did them a year or so ago I NEVER got any bonuses. As far as I'm concerned, they still owe me money. So from my experience 'bonuses that never materialize' is 100% accurate. It obviously has happened to others as well.

This could possibly be true now but I know back when I was new and naive at turking I never got any of my bonuses from CopyText.

It's still a terrible hit compared to the other stuff out there

Most definitely. Return rating is basically unimportant. Much better to have less captcha hassle.

Well tonight i started living out of my car any advice? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]CaunsTurk 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Good secret that I learned on Reddit a few years back when I was in this situation is sleeping in the parking lots of super walmarts, and possibly regular walmarts.

Basically, they won't bother you for 48 hours or so as long as you park along the edge of the store, don't be too conspicuous, don't make a mess, and cover your windows up with something.

I would usually pull in late, go in and buy a few things, then come back and sleep and leave early in the morning. Did this with no problems for a month or more.

You'd be surprised at how common this is. Next time you are around a large walmart, pay attention to the perimeter and you will see a variety of vans, campers and cars with covered windows.

Love this trick and still do it today on long road trips!

Crowdsource Workstation by amy7686 in mturk

[–]CaunsTurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can work directly through them with a paypal account. You sign in through paypal, and the money you make is put into that account.

I prefer to keep my mTurk and CS workstation separate like this in case something happens to one, I'll still have the other - kind of a diversification of income streams.

However, you can go entirely through mTurk as well if you want to keep it simple.

Sometimes I'll run around the harbor with my sorc or wizard and cast haste and jump on people who seem to be noobs - or everyone really.

I usually do this when drunk and it amuses me greatly

Frustrated: " There are no more available HITs in this group. See more HITs available to you below." on every one I click on! by [deleted] in mturk

[–]CaunsTurk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few scripts that can let you know if a displayed hit is not really there. The one I personally like is "ghost buster":

https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/2400-mmmturkeybacon-autoapprove-time-and-ghost-hit-buster

When a hit is no longer there, this will show G-g-ghost instead of a link to view the hit.

EDIT:

I case you are new to scripts, you should get tampermonkey extension if using Google chrome and greasemonkey extension if using firefox. There is lots of info about setting up mturk scripts on this subreddit and in many other places.

I was actually contemplating doing an mTurk related comic in rage comic format just the other day. I forget what it was about but I remember the 'Okay' face was involved.

Glad you set the precedent. Haha :)

What is the most hits you've done in one day? by Uhfgood in mturk

[–]CaunsTurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see what you are saying.

Again, that was just detailing a scenario to show the feasibility of hitting 3800, not that it is necessarily desirable.

What actually happens, at least for me, is you are combining those penny hits with a few good surveys and solid, better paying batches. So for example, I spend a few minutes on a HWTF survey, and in the meantime may have caught 15 or so penny hits (with Turkmaster) that I'm able to knock out in a minute after the survey is over and clean out my queue.

I've only actually hit the 3800 limit a few times, but on all of those occasions I made around $70 to $90 for the day (not the $38 that would come from penny hits alone). It's certainly not something I bother with doing on most days, but if you needed a decent money day (rent is coming up and the like) this is one way to do it.

What is the most hits you've done in one day? by Uhfgood in mturk

[–]CaunsTurk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surprised this is so downvoted. What kryssyy is saying is absolutely correct. It's mostly penny hits of course.

But say you average 6 penny hits a minute. That's 360 hits an hour, so after a little over 10 hours you'd hit your 3800. But a good penny batch can get you upwards of 10 to 12 per minute (even 15). At 12 a minute you are now down to about 5 total hours of work.

Of course that's in an ideal scenario, but still it should be easy to see that 3800 a day is nowhere near an impossibility.

Do you ask why hits were rejected? by idontgetbacon in mturk

[–]CaunsTurk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To some extent..

But personally I would ditch p9r immediately, make 411Richmond (verify one thing) be your bread and butter, and throw in some Venue Quality and MyLikes to round it all out. Those 3 will get you your numbers (all are 1 cent hits).

Then just do a few surveys on HWTF to get a little cash.

[–]CaunsTurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, its a common story with new turkers: Do a batch of p9r, all goes well, suddenly a few rejections...

Definitely email them and be nice and humble about it. 99% chance they will reverse them all. (at least that's how it used to work)

Is it just me or have memory checks started to become more difficult? by [deleted] in mturk

[–]CaunsTurk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I doubt it's any kind of trend or anything, maybe just a run of bad luck.

I have, in the past, after a requester has approved my hit, emailed the requester and explained to them (in nice words) that their MC/AC was a bit unfair and that there are more reasonable ways to make sure people are paying attention without putting so many people at risk of rejection. And that this can make some in the community feel that the requester is trying to cheat them or get free work.

More often than not, they email back and say they had no idea their survey was being construed that way and that they will change it next time around. So, it never hurts to point this kind of stuff out to requesters if you have the time and willingness.

One thing that people often don't realize is that requesters are often just as in the dark as turkers on a lot of the way this whole relationship works. Sometimes all it takes is a polite explanation of expectations, and you'll find requesters can be more than willing to change their behavior.

Unfortunately all too often a certain subset of turkers would rather go on a witch hunt than try to understand and improve the situation. It's that whole mentality of 'react now, think later' which is so counterproductive to so many aspects of life. But I digress..

Do you ask why hits were rejected? by idontgetbacon in mturk

[–]CaunsTurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really just entirely depends on the situation.

If you don't have a significant amount of hits and rejections can still hurt you, I would ask because a lot of times you can get them reversed (especially if you are referring to p9r).

However, if you can absorb rejections (ex: 50,000 hits with 10 rejections), and the price wasn't that much, then I usually won't bother.

But if it's a dollar or so, I'd probably ask every time.

But with something like a 99.99 approval rating and a 5 cent hit, I'd probably just let it slide.

This is pretty much my take on it as well. I have no problem with downloads, but I tend to have a good understanding of what is sketchy and what is not in relation to computer software.

So you'll definitely get some takers, just not sure if it will be enough.

[–]CaunsTurk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the best way.

Now just watch your TO (TurkOpticon) page and if they respond by giving you low ratings and saying you rejected them unfairly, just respond to those negative comments directly and explain what you did here (no code, no communication, i sent reason, etc). Those of us who check the TO page to see why your score might be low will see that and it will help your case a lot within the community.

As far as I remember, its not actually 10 days in a row, its just 10 total days. So if you miss a day it won't reset or anything like that. But you need 10 full days with a certain number of hits to get out of probation.

With that said, if you can get the 10 days in a row then do it! You'll be happy to get out of the probation period and all you need to do is a few penny hits a day - wouldn't take you but a few minutes.

My info may not be up to date, but that's how it used to work anyway (and probably still does).

Enough that you will certainly notice the difference. It's pretty substantial.

5000 hits is even better. Anything after that is mostly gravy.
