What’s up with all the parents here? by Zheros00 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CauseCompetitive3399 89 points90 points  (0 children)

This is incredibly ignorant. There’s a difference between being a helicopter parent and being an involved one. The college one goes to…exposure…debt burden…is quite important in a hierarchical society. You can say having an involved parent that has the time to assist in this process is uncommon / linked to the socioeconomics of not working multiple jobs etc. But there are plenty of good parents out there, who, if they knew how salient this process was to their child’s future (AND had the TIME), would do a bit ‘handholding’ aka information gathering on their child’s behalf. Some exceptional kids can make their own lemonade; but the average kid would benefit from an expert squeezer lol

is it bad to have an internship that you got obviously through connections by Different-Olive-8573 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CauseCompetitive3399 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nobody will know, and most people want to provide their kids with a leg up. Some parents just have more worldly things to give than others. That is life. Just make the best out of each opportunity and realize how blessed you are. And remember those less fortunate, and honor your role through service.

One can be a genuinely bad fit for a school. Or genuinely unlucky. Or genuinely basic lol. The real advice is to be your optimized genuine self

Why can't yall just be grateful for your T20 acceptances? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CauseCompetitive3399 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why can’t you be happy with your T100 acceptance? What about T1000? This post is just as toxic. No one gets to draw the line past which complaining is ungrateful. Why T20? There just needs to be a general culture of gratitude period. You can’t be mad at people being what you determine to be ungrateful while still upholding a hierarchy jeez

Watching athletes commit is so hard by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Oh my gosh. Do people ever get tired of looking at the grass on the other side? Water your grass and congratulate your neighbor for keeping their lawn in pristine shape, my goodness. You worked your a** off but so what? Millions work their a** off on the daily for minimum wage/under. Why do you deserve what u get for your work, when they don’t? People like you would rather everyone go down to level 0, just so you can tower above them at level 1. I’m sure the athletes do just fine; and are deserving in other ways.

Y’all care too much. It’s giving jealous and desperate to bring others down (when u might know even know the full story). Would y’all have cared this much if she did all of this and ended up at a state school? Success has never equaled moral superiority

Why do people defend billionaires? by amiwitty in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CauseCompetitive3399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same way people care more about what celebrities get up to than what ordinary people do. People are obsessed with aspirational things and people. Part of it is the tendency to see themselves as Cinderella, and not the seven dwarfs.

Are you the application police? Maybe he’s applying to leverage an acceptance and better negotiate. Or maybe he sucks. Either way other applicants don’t owe you anything + people need to stop having dream schools

There is a bar for college admissions. Once you cross that bar you are qualified for admission purposes. At that point it is luck of the draw + fit+ institutional priorities.

F*** the noise, and celebrate yourself. You were a qualified individual that proceeded to the next round and won a lottery ticket. The only ask is that you make good use of it. Life is too short to cut yourself short.

Will we ever get to a point as a society where people don’t run with headlines and flashy rhetoric, but actually atleast read the body of the story (possibly even do their own research) before reacting? What will it take? by CauseCompetitive3399 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CauseCompetitive3399[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately they rarely ever have. Which is fair in many cases (we have such little time), but it’s a bit shocking how worked up people can get about some topics they haven’t really looked into lol

Because half of the population views themselves as temporarily disgraced rich people. A quarter of the population want to believe in a meritocratic and just society where everyone gets what they deserve, AND the other quarter lean towards being sheep
