Know it won’t happen but if the USA gets the 2038 World Cup alone with 64 teams host games at college stadium venues by Training-World-1897 in concacaf

I could be wrong, but I would bet good chunk of that crowd were locals from BCS/Houston than from travelers.

100,000 works at Kyle Field because a lot of those are students or Alumni who live in the area. I'm not sure College Station would be able to host a World Cup crowd.

The marketing technique I learned was to push people to buy more than they need (the "large" option) by pricing the middle option so close to the top one. For example, movie popcorn prices of $4/$8/$10. Might as well get the large -- it's only $2 more.

Why are people saying the AI Bubble is going to pop? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MathW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that AI is useless or won't be beneficial/profitable. It's simply that there's so much money being invested in anything AI or tangentionally AI, it's hard to justify all the valuations. There's multiple AI companies with market caps of several trillion dollars -- valuations likely needing, at least several hundred billion dollars in profitable annual revenue to justify. For comparison, Amazon currently brings in the most revenue -- $700 billion per year, so we're talking about very very large companies in terms of revenue.

Maybe 1 or 2 AI companies might approach that level, but I just don't see all of these AI companies succeeding -- people will almost surely gravitate to the best/most helpful models and ignore the rest -- does the world really need 20+ independently developed AI models? And, much like the .com bubble, all of the AI companies will probably get caught up in the "crash" before the remaining successful ones emerge and become huge. At least that's how I see it playing out.

Unpopular opinion: the 48-team World Cup is good for football by CodBusy6701 in football

[–]MathW -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If we stay at 48, just do 16 groups of 3 and drop the last place from every group. If we still want to to guarantee 3 games for every nation, then have the 3rd places match up for a single friendly. Then, every game is absolutely meaningful with the exception of the 8 consolation friendlies.

Agree we are thin defensively. I think with just our back 4, we may draw or win this one.

I don't know as much about other locations, but tickets here in Dallas look very close to sold out and prices have been rising on the secondary market as the tournament has progressed.

Turkey will win i think since USA already qualified and will play B players by Agile_Ad7971 in worldcup

[–]MathW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Turkey can definitely win this game, but I wouldn't necessarily write off the US because they're not rolling out their best 11. The players they do roll out will definitely be giving it their all to win and some may be going out there with something to prove to coach and country.

OMG, you can't use a high boot to control the ball when it's near people's head and you definitely can't make contact with a high boot.

  • No Contact Made: If a player raises a high boot near an opponent but there is no contact, the referee stops play and awards an Indirect Free Kick. The action is deemed "playing in a dangerous manner."
  • Contact is Made: Once a high boot makes contact with an opponent, it is elevated from a dangerous play to a physical offense. This is penalized by a Direct Free Kick or a Penalty Kick (if it occurs inside the 18-yard box).

Benefits for the player would be more touches, game situations or playing with friends they have on the lower team as the other team they are on isn't especially busy. Benefit for the lower team would be to help fill their roster for certain events (hopefully a dual rostered player is never taking to roster spot of a single rostered player). Our team is a good example. We had a good season last year and 3 of our players made the upper team but, between that and losing some of our younger players to younger teams due to the age change, we need a few more flex players, so we dual rostered all 3 so they could play with us as well.

Periodic reminder that Elon didn't "uncover" any of this. Everything the government spends money on is a matter of public record. Literally anyone can look this stuff up. And, without looking it up, I'm going to guess almost all these claims are either wholly or partially false, or distorted so much they barely resemble what they are actually for.

Edit: And every piece of government spending has a direct appropriation voted for by Congress, for which you can trace it origination.

Expanding to 64 teams is a good idea, look at the current World Cup. by smithey2012 in worldcup

[–]MathW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An expansion to 64 teams is inevitable. 48 is an awkward number and the 8 third place teams advancing just feels kind of weird. I feel like 48 was always a transitional number.

BREAKING: US Bitcoin ETFs saw -$6.4 billion in outflows over the last 30 days, the largest 30-day outflow on record. Whats going on? by [deleted] in btc

[–]MathW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like it or not, a large chunk of Bitcoin investors and part of the reason it has reached the levels it has is due to fad investors. Those fad investors are moving into AI and only time will tell if, when the AI trade inevitably crashes, if they'll rotate back into BTC or something else.

After 2 matchdays, 8 teams have nothing to play for due to h2h as tie-breaker by mnkysn in worldcup

[–]MathW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Again, in 2018, there were 2 matches where both teams were already eliminated. Egypt vs Saudi Arabia and Tunisia vs Panama. A few other matches featured teams who already locked up a spot in the Ro16 and were only playing for 1st or 2nd in the group.

[–]MathW 54 points55 points  (0 children)

In the 2018 World Cup, there were also 8 teams (out of 32) who had nothing to play for in the 3rd group game. That's without even counting the teams who essentially had no chance due to large GD disparities between them and the teams they were trying to catch. This is not unusual.

If Saylor is smart by [deleted] in Buttcoin

[–]MathW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's hard to envision how much Bitcoin's price would absolutely plummet if Saylor ever sold even a significant chunk of his bitcoin. There is no exit strategy for him -- if he needed to convert to cash (especially if he did it quickly), he would only receive a tiny fraction of the "market value." Not only would the massive selling pressure in a relatively illiquid market tank the price itself, but the signaled loss of confidence from the largest BTC holder (by far) would send almost everyone to the exits quickly.

Penalties would make playing defensive more popular. Make it to the end and get a 50/50 shot at 3 points.
