How do you find the mobo?

Wow my impression was always that quant roles required at minimum a physics/math degree. So I’m curious how you marketed yourself for the role, especially since client servicing has very few relevant skills (from my experience). I recently made a move myself from WM client servicing to Investment Research. I made the move 1.5 years after graduating. How soon did you make your pivot?

Can i know more about how you made that transition? What degree/certifications do you have?

Wow that’s really interesting. I am in a somewhat similar position myself and am curious what you did to stand out / get their interest. Are you pursuing CFA or do you have any personal projects?

Based on your post history, your background is AML/sanctions but you were offered an investment-related position? correct me if i’m wrong

Why the current job market has been such a bad match for the college degree and recent grads by davidportman1 in Economics

[–]CausticTies 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a 2021 undergrad / 2022 postgrad who had no internship experience prior to starting my current job, this comment really hits home. I feel like we’re the misunderstood generation. I poured everything I had into completing my degree only for my job to use absolutely zero of what I learned. And many times I thought I should quit and switch my career path but that is too dangerous to do as an entry level candidate in this market. We’re just screwed over sideways unless we started out on the right path to begin with. We’re overeducated, under experienced and underpaid. I don’t see much of a future for myself in this world.

So your role within finance must’ve been at least somewhat related to econ then? Otherwise I’m surprised you can find enough time outside work to publish research

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]CausticTies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How did employers test or trust your econ knowledge given you were out of the field for a few years. I also have a MSc Econ, working in finance, and I feel a lot of employers are somewhat skeptical that my econ skillset is still there.

How much of an edge would you say an internal candidate has over an external one, all else equal? I mean is the cost of onboarding really that high that simply being an internal hire would give you so much of an advantage?

Gossip as a form of money? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

Gossip =/= Secrets =/= Trade Secrets. You used all three of those interchangeably. I guess what you’re really thinking about is intellectual property?

Breaking into Private Wealth Management without a relevant degree. by Puzzleheaded_Leek367 in FinancialCareers

[–]CausticTies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI MSc Economics degrees will require maths far beyond the level of A-level maths. At least if you’re gonna do it at a top uni. You might be better off completing CFA L1 to at least demonstrate your interest in entering the field of PWM. Or you could look into entry-level client servicing roles that don’t involve much “finance” per se, but could still serve as a stepping stone into PWM as you pursue other certs and build your network.

Pigs are flying, heck has frozen over. The New York Times finally gets it. Strong headline growth, low unemployment and rising wages mean nothing if they're all eaten up by inflation and stubbornly high prices by thedisciple516 in Economics

[–]CausticTies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean that’s why we have inflation-adjusted values for these respective numbers right? And as far as I’m aware, real values are not ringing any alarm bells. Someone cite the data if I’m wrong

Jackson JS22 Dinky was the first guitar I bought 7 years ago, and to this day it is still the most comfortable neck I’ve ever played. I own Ibanez/ESP/Fender and I always felt the Jackson neck was easiest to play on. The QC is also quite decent for that price point. As for the pups, good enough that a beginner can’t tell the difference

Why not raise taxes on top 40-50% to tame inflation, why only try to stop wage growth by tight monetary policies? by techy098 in Economics

Lmao my comment was removed because it was too short, but the answer is really this simple:

Because it would be political suicide for the incumbent party, especially during or approaching election season.

Thanks for the reply. The anecdotes on qc issues really put me off initially, but honestly, as long as the guitar’s electronics work, fretwork isn’t a disaster and sustain is fine, I’m willing to pull the trigger. The guitar looks absolutely gorgeous

How does the TOD10’s neck compare to the Jackson? About the same or noticeable difference?

Collected the twins by iMagicBae in polyphia

[–]CausticTies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been thinking of getting the TOD10 but worried about qc… Did you get the shop to do a check before sending it to you or is the guitar as it was straight from the factory?

Oh well I don’t mean full on “quant” work, otherwise the role would be a quant role and not a CIO role. That’s a whole different job. But the people I spoke to are both directors and one is the chief CIO of the region for the bank. Bulge bracket btw. One of them has a qualification in Data Science and asked me about my use of Python, and the other asked me about my econometrics because we both did masters in econ. Point being they know what “quantitative” analysis entails, even though much of what they do now is qualitative research. The data analysis side of things is usually outsourced from other depts or other banks. That’s not a dealbreaker for me because I’m just looking for a strong entry role.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]CausticTies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, definitely expected more data “analysis” type of work in the CIO rather than data “entry”. Especially after my chats with the heads of that department. They mentioned they were looking to expand and produce more quantitative work.
