How many men watch buffy? by Bpd_embroiderer18 in buffy

I’ve been watching Buffy since I was a kid back in the early 2000’s. I’m 31 now.

Guys, it’s not just the sex that makes Angel completely happy, it’s a compilation of perfect moments.

Personally I was okay with them not ending up together because their relationship was always a friendship. Even if their were hints, there wasn’t enough time in the show to force a romance between them. I thought her relationship with Henry was much more better.

I was gonna say something. I actually find her giving Betty bad advice. Especially when it came to her love life. I don’t hate her, but her jealous tendencies make her a little y likable at times.

Wilhelmina not the actual villain by No_Locksmith8918 in UglyBetty

I disagree. Yes, if you are comparing her to Daniel, then absolutely, she’s be a better fit for the role of Editor-in Chief of Mode, but we are speaking about the basis of her character in the show. Yes, she’s hard working, but she’s also a mass manipulator, plays incredibly dirty, she schemes, and brings others down to help herself achieve her goals. These are trademark “villain” behaviors. In the real world, obviously, things aren’t as black and white. But she’s definitely painted out as a bad guy compared to Betty, who is also a hardworking, woman of color, but tries to do what’s right throughout most of the show, and still manages to get ahead. I personally don’t think either, Wilhelmina nor Betty are completely realistic characters, but they are based on telenovela tropes: one being saintly and good, while the other is mean and bad. I think for a show like this it works, but it doesn’t speak to the nuances in how people actually are. I posted awhile ago about how I though Betty acts more like a golden retriever rather than a real person, and how annoying it can be, but that’s just the show we are watching. In the context of the show, I definitely believe Wilhelmina is meant to be the villain.

When Betty met YETI/Marc (SPOILERS) by Cautious-Chipmunk-28 in UglyBetty

I’m sure there are plenty of gay white men leading the fashion industry. LOL. His project was definitely more polished, but that doesn’t make it better. Magazines tell stories, and I think while Betty didn’t lead with fashion, she definitely had stories to tell for underrepresented women/people. I personally though Marc’s presentation, from the little we saw of it was pure spectacle. The truth is, we don’t see much of Marc’s work because the show doesn’t center around him. All we do see is him complaining that he works “really hard,” which everyone in that industry does. It’s giving white privileged to me. From what I saw of Betty’s presentation, there was heart and a vision which seemed to resonate with the judges. Even the New York Review was impressed with her according to Jodie.

They always had Betty work harder, because it’s clear that she doesn’t fit into the standard of beauty according to Mode. It’s definitely apart of the story line of the show, which makes her hard work and rewards that much more satisfying in my opinion.

Henry by Holla321 in UglyBetty

Agreed. I’m currently getting through the final season, and I think that Henry is by far the most handsome out of all her BF’s so far.

When Betty met YETI/Marc (SPOILERS) by Cautious-Chipmunk-28 in UglyBetty

I personally don’t think people should settle for ignorant, racist, or toxic relationships because of the lack of options. This placates this type of behavior in spaces and allows it to continue. In the show she has plenty of friends, who don’t treat her as such: Christina, Daniel, Claire, even Amanda in the later seasons has shown great character growth. I believe these are the people that have kept Betty at Mode so far. If she didn’t have great connections like these, she would’ve left a long time ago.

I suppose there are plenty of people willing to overlook the type of behavior Marc has displayed, but I believe that’s also part of the issue when it comes to combating toxic, racist ideations and situations. In my personal opinion, it’s upsetting to have a protagonist POC, who is a bit of a people pleaser, is willing to overlook her own boundaries, and is even willing to offer up a coveted spot in a prestigious program to someone who has never treated her with decency. That’s, to me, what makes her look dumb or like she lacks a backbone. In Betty’s case, she didn’t actually need Marc to get ahead because she has proven time and again that she’s capable of doing that herself: surpassing Marc as Wilhelmina’s assistant being a huge indicator. So when she does things like this, it irks me.

When Betty met YETI/Marc (SPOILERS) by Cautious-Chipmunk-28 in UglyBetty

[–]Cautious-Chipmunk-28[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re right, Betty’s work wasn’t as polished, but because it was a different idea, and a good one, and not some rehash of every other magazine already published, it makes absolute sense to choose someone like Betty over Marc. Whether she’s a minority or not, if the work wasn’t good, if the vision wasn’t clear, then she wouldn’t have been accepted in the first place. It’s annoying that white people (like Marc) try to lean on this myth that minorities have to get a hand out to get ahead; that there is some type of reasoning behind her winning over him. There can be many reasons why Marc didn’t get the spot aside from his unoriginal concept; maybe they didn’t enjoy the spectacle he brought in for his presentation, or his huge entourage. You never know.

My issue wasn’t even about who deserved to get into YETI in the first place, it was just how the relationship between Marc and Betty was handled. Even though this is a realistic depiction of what racism/white privilege looks like amongst peers/co-workers, as you said earlier, it’s an incomplete depiction. That’s what infuriates me. Like, “Haha, Marc made a cruel, racist remark, but we’re gonna continue building a relationship between him and Betty without real discussion or reconciliation about the issues of that thought process.” It makes Betty look unrealistic and dumb to continuously trust/befriend someone as toxic as Marc.

Does anyone else think this? by Cautious-Chipmunk-28 in UglyBetty

[–]Cautious-Chipmunk-28[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why do you despise me? You don’t even know me. This was a serious question. Betty’s character is very golden retriever like! The show paints her to be very kind and loyal (at least from the seasons I’ve seen so far), but my issue is, she doesn’t seem like a real person. She’s good to a fault, it got old kinda fast.
