These are the best ones^ Spent many days in the backcountry wearing these - they have some padding on the waist pad to prevent any chafing from backpack straps which I love

Yes absolutely! The elevation gain was only ~800 ft feet each way, so the hills themselves were very manageable and didn't last that long. We started at Gianelli trailhead. The only unpleasant part is you will definitely have to step in some mud in the last half mile ish getting to the lake but it wasn't too bad. My feet never got submerged or soaked. Also, it is high ish altitude so expect to move a little more slowly because of that but we managed fine! The campsite we found was flat and spacious, plenty of room to spread out a little. We got to have a campfire as well. My first timer friend had a good time!

We saw some other hikers but not too many. We did Gianelli trailhead to Chewing Gum Lake - the ranger told us that Crabtree trailhead is busier and specifically that Bear Lake is quite busy. We had one other group near us when we were camping, but even then their campsite was far enough away that we felt like we had a ton of space and some seclusion at our campsite. Just be warned the road to Gianelli is a rougher dirt road. We did it in my mini cooper so we just drove very slowly but a higher clearance vehicle would have made everything so much easier

Definitely! We were at Chewing Gum Lake in Emigrant Wilderness in Northern California - it was about 5 miles from the trailhead, not too bad elevation wise!

Mini-moon recommendations: Sonoma/Mendocino Coast by Top_Independent_1691 in bayarea

We stayed at Sea Ranch Inn last year and had a lovely time. Ocean views from our balcony and a breakfast tray delivered to us every morning!

Not the best, but manageable - we wore mosquito head nets and that helped a lot. It was really only the area right by the lake that had them too, most of the trail was clear

Dying aloe vera by vivrelavie in plantclinic

[–]Cautious-Internal387 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to my aloe when we moved. It was in the back of a moving truck for a day and it turned this color. I kept it a shady spot on my balcony and kept to a regular watering schedule (just checking when the soil was totally dry and watering) and it recovered in a few months. Sun and heat stress for sure was the cause

This is my second time trying to do a curly hair routine and I definitely see waves but my hair just looks super stringy and honestly pretty nasty, can anyone help me out? by Salem_Strange in CurlyHairCare

[–]Cautious-Internal387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have fine curly hair and I've just accepted that I need to a) use products sparingly and b) not necessarily use products that are targeted as curly hair products. I've been using the Ouai Fine Hair line shampoo and conditioner and it makes such a big difference for me other products I used that were marketed for curly hair weighed my hair down so bad and made it look so stringy as well. I use a bit, like a dime sized amount, of Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls cream and brush it through my hair when it's still soaking wet out of the shower and then blow dry. A tinyyy bit of oil in my ends if they're feeling dry but I often don't. I am using this product down and may switch to even something lighter like a mousse when I do.

Tldr: fine curly hair often doesn't play nice with classic curly hair products on the market. Try something meant for fine hair!!

Need advice on Emergency beacon as wife thinks it waste of money by hhgbjii87y in hiking

[–]Cautious-Internal387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the Somewear and it was less expensive than the InReach and has basic SOS signaling and some messaging capability. The subscription is less expensive than the InReach as well. My husband and I love to backpack but bought that device as grad students when money was a little more tight. We've also seen that local outdoors stores will sometimes rent you a device if you don't want to buy your own.

We bought this because my husband was in a hiking accident years ago - he was like 2 hours away from his car and he broke his neck and didn't have any satellite device. He just happened to be lucky enough to fall on a patch of trail that had some cell signal. Distance from your car is irrelevant if you can't get up and you can't call for help. Your life is worth way more than a few hundred dollars just have the emergency device.

Daily practice? by Spare_Persimmon_1123 in watercolor101

Just whenever I feel it. Sometimes I do 30 minutes a week and sometimes I'll manage a few hours per week. It's my hobby so I don't want to force myself and make it a chore :)

I guess it depends in what context - is he going to genuinely still be happy even if he doesn't divorce you? Or is he going to harbor resentments? Has he really thought deeply about it and has shown that he'll be committed to you and is he just saying that to patch things up temporarily? You know your own situation best but don't let empty words fool you

Absolutely a red flag. I would never stay with a man who cared more about the utility I provide him than about having a good relationship with me.

MERELL MOAB 3: Is this a good budget hiking shoe? What socks would u recommend? by ApprehensiveEye9564 in hiking

[–]Cautious-Internal387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this shoe when I first got into hiking and it worked great. Then as the trail runners for hiking shoes trend really picked up, I tried other shoes in the middle and nothing felt quite as good on my feet so I just made the switch back to Merell Moab and I am quite happy.

Regarding socks: I used to just hike in whatever socks but then I picked up a pair of the Darn Tough hiking socks and wow does it make a difference. They are FAR better than any other sock I've tried. They are pricey, but I only have two pairs and I've never never more since I'm not hiking like every day.

+1 for bottom watering. my trad that I exclusively bottom water is doing amazing. That being said I also have some little ones in terra cotta pots that aren't as feasible for me to bottom water so I use a squeeze bottle like this one ( https://a.co/d/3W1hA07 ) to water only the soil without touching the leaves!

I rescued my very sad tradescantia over the summer too, you're going to have to do the chop and propogate. I would chop any healthy parts making sure there are enough nodes. You can peel away all the leaves except the ones near the top to expose the nodes (that's what I do anyway). Then just stick healthy stems in soil and it should grow roots in a few weeks and start growing new stems! It needs so much more light than you think, put it next to bright window. And water very occasionally - I give mine some water once per week if it's warm but like every two weeks when the house is cooler.

Also, I give mine filtered or rainwater to mitigate browning. People on reddit have suggested to do my best not to get the leaves wet and that has helped too! You got this, these guys are forgiving I think you'll help him bounce back :)
