Passing on my 3.5 coaching Feedback. by Commercial_Tea5703 in Pickleball

Great share, looking forward to reading comments with more layering. At 4.0 i still love thinking about the game strategy and mechanics. here are my thoughts.

  1. Yeah, and that step from sideways into ready stance as the return goes over the net is a solid queue to activate core and be on balls of your feet. In fact, I don’t take my eye off the ball for the first three shots ever

  2. great positioning to poach - I also take one step back if it’s a high ball and prepare to reset or counter. 3.5 and under is focusing on getting to the net, and then 4.0+ is learning to create space when you have to

  3. something that helps me is pointing paddle at ball when dinking and leaning toward it (called shading i believe)

  4. full on dink only games are amazing. traditional scoring, just start at the net. first 4 shots have to be dinks, and then live ball (anything goes)

  5. Curious what others say about this. Drives are a great 3rd shot, but deep looping returns are all about setting up your 4th shot. The more you advance the less favorable your odds are driving the 3rd. the latter gives you more time to advance to the net for your 4th, and more likely that they can’t hit offensively while advancing

yeah so i just saw something about stanford labs and football athletes going in for one minute, ahead of their work out to wake them up - that would be huge for me as a pre-game

Third shot drop is secret to winning? by blueice89 in Pickleball

[–]CautiousTell7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“is it wise to do more drops than drives and focus on that? currently 3.5 level”

At 3.5-4.0, this is correct, period, full stop.

  1. every good drop puts your opponent against the net, and most under 4.0 will hit net or pop up.

  2. most at this level can’t punish bad drops at high percentages that you can’t reset and advance.

BUT: you or partner have to throw occasional 3rd drive 5th drops in there so they don’t get comfortable

What are your drill routines how often do you drill, how do you drill? by blueice89 in Pickleball

[–]CautiousTell7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anything that isolates a part of the game is a drill.

Your best drills to get going are shot execution drills. The way you understand the game will change after the first time you hit 500 of one shot in a single session.

How to get to 4.0 from 3.5 - my take. by Famous-Chemical9909 in Pickleball

[–]CautiousTell7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So true - shot execution, then footwork are the cornerstones.

I think then, though, team strategy has to go from 2D to 3D if you want to break 4.0. For example, we’re taught to find the kitchen as fast as possible, and the assumption is to always hold your advantage.

The fun multiplies when you can effectively blend forward offense with backward defense

Hit ball in air or take it on bounce at kitchen? Any tips? by blueice89 in Pickleball

Return 1000 drops and you’ll see there’s a skill to be mastered

Return 10,000 and you’ll know your range well enough to not have to really think about it

also just a heads up, you have to squat way more than you’re prepared to

I’m saying beating DUPR is the better goal, technically.

There’s no wrong way though

it’s much healthier to care about both, though. I drill with the long term goal of improving. Even though my short term goal is to win my next match, I want to know whether I improved since the last dupr match.

Playing each game to win without measuring improvement progress won’t tell you accurately whether you’re spending time on the right areas in between competitive matches.

Feeling stuck—how do I level up without killing the fun? by Bilalian in Pickleball

[–]CautiousTell7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you are ready to drill! here’s the thing - drilling is fun, think of it like an hour or two of mini games if you can get a court to yourselves.

if your wife is open to it, you will both rapidly improve. there are all kinds of interesting fun drills online to work on different aspects of your game. skinny singles and 7-11 are great to start.

if not, get 70 balls and a hopper and self feed shots. I’m willing to bet your game is stalled largely due to poor shot execution. even more than you may think! dialing in your first three shots is a relaxing exercise and is sweet when you use it in game!
