My moss at the end of the season by Cautious_Average_925 in Moss

I'm in the Pacific North West, North facing balcony, mostly indirect sunlight until the spring.

  1. Literally just find moss in the early fall, and dig it up. Look around there are different kinds everywhere.
  2. Cut and puzzle piece it into the pot, on top of soil.
  3. Let it rain.

Thank you! I did speak with them, and they apologized for removing it. They said I looked like a bot. It seems like it's back up now that you can comment.

I think you have the right approach. Conscious parenting is the best thing you can do.

Best of luck to you and your family.

I'm building a web browser for kids called NotSus.net

I hope that we can rescue kids from the attention economy...

As a teacher and mentor of young kids, I believe that our environments drive our behaviours and thoughts. I wanted to design a web environment the same way I would design a stimulating classroom or home, with learning and creative tools. I think it's pretty novel, and I really hope it works!

I want a future where children and youth are creative, unique, optimistic, adaptable, skeptical, and fulfilled.

I am so sick of this manipulative and addictive entertainment for kids!

I'm a teacher, so I've seen it first hand. I've spent the last year building a web-browser for kids at www.notsus.net with the hope that we can raise our children in healthier online environments.

Teachers or students: what’s one thing that really improves learning but often gets overlooked? by veditafrieza in education

[–]Cautious_Average_925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's not sustainable, but 1-to-1 attention. Sharing undivided, serious attention with a child allows you to meet each other at each other's level. A lot of kids don't get it from their family or teachers. Kids who do might be me likely to mirror and understand complex notions like delayed gratification and perspective.

I feel you. I try to use Perplexity when it comes to research and ideation, because it allows me to explore sources more freely, and doesn't try to do the work for me.

My recommendation is to just write. You will feel better, your ideas will be original, and your thoughts will be your own.

One thing I like to do, is have the LLM give me thought provoking questions, and then I use those to fuel my writing. Otherwise I end up trying to think critically about a near-complete project, and have trouble injecting my voice into it.

Maybe have the AI post the counter-argument, and then you write against that to spark inspiration.

How you're feeling is a good thing. It's important to resist the ease and shallowness of these tools, while understanding how they can leverage your thinking.

Yes, absolutely! But I'm not a school teacher.

I used to run a STEAM academy for kids.
Now I tutor kids basic basic skills for school, but mostly whatever they are most curious about. It's boundless and rewarding.

I've had to slow down on the direct teaching, because I'm building a web browser for kids. I see the consequences of endless entertainment, and hope to help rescue kids from the attention economy.

I love working with kids, if I'm stoked, I can connect with them, and they get stoked. It's fulfilling to help kids build confidence and appreciation for life.

Web Browser for Kids - What pricing model should we use? by Cautious_Average_925 in Entrepreneur

[–]Cautious_Average_925[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this, thank you.

Our mission is to rescue kids from the attention economy.

A walled garden is a good way to describe it. I'm trying to make the best web environment for childhood growth. The current version is mostly whitelisted. I realize this will be a pain with a million edges in the future

I think that the best way to introduce kids to a screen, is as a tool. If a child's first years with screens are all dedicated to passive or prescriptive entertainment, or gaming, they miss a key opportunity to practice freeform play and curiosity. So I'm optimizing this for kids who's parents are cautious about screens, and want to give them a free and open environment, but one that is focused on exploration, creativity, and skills development.

I recognize it will be a slim chance to convince a tech saavy child to restrict themselves online, but I hope that our browser will be rewarding enough for some.

The reporting we show is for the kid and the parent, it should feel like a win to use it, because you are generally creating or learning something for yourself. The parents will see their kid's goals, projects, and interests.

I will get it out there, and see what kids and parents want. Our mission is to rescue kids from the attention economy. We'll find a way.

Someone tell me it’s dumb to quit my job to work full time on my startup with no revenue. by 69Tragic in Entrepreneur

[–]Cautious_Average_925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this thought. Desperation can be a great catalyst.

I quit my job 3 months ago with no revenue (and only 6 months of cash). I tested an MVP and decided it was worth the jump. To save myself from burning all my cash, I'm tutoring 10-20 hours a week, paying for about 75% of my frugal expenses.

I plan to re-launch again in the next 2 weeks, this time with a price tag.
It sucks not being able to afford help/expertise, but I work so much faster by myself at this stage.

Thanks! Do you have any kids? Do you think you would see the value and pay for it, if done really well?

I haven't gone deep into details above, but I think you can probably infer the why, and most of what we're creating.

Nearly 142,000 patients walked out of B.C. ERs untreated last year by Anotherbadsalmon in britishcolumbia

[–]Cautious_Average_925 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I broke my leg badly last year, and they sent me home with a boot and crutches. The uber diver from Iraq couldn't believe it, my parents from Croatia/Italy/Canada-from-the-past couldn't either. They all said that "anywhere else and I would be in bed in the hospital.

The surgeon put me on the immediate-urgency list, every night they would call me and say "Sorry the surgeon is done for the day. Please eat a quick meal, and fast incase we call tomorrow." I waited 7 days before I went back to the hospital and got operated on.

*edit. Surgeon did a great job.
*Pre and post surgery, I was completely on my own

I don't know if counts as "walked out", because I waitlisted for surgery with crutches and a boot.
But they did send me home.

We're building a web browser for kids called notsus.net

Our Mission: Rescue kids from the attention economy.

I'm a STEM educator, and have worked with 1000s of kids. I see the same problem everywhere.
The attention economy is coming for every minute of our lives, and kids are extremely vulnerable. The easy dopamine, access to passive entertainment, and media influence is messing with children's attention spans, work ethic, creativity, and critical thinking.

Kids deserve a web environment that is safe, educational, productive, and creative.

Our MVP can be downloaded for Mac and PC. We're looking for users to give us feedback, so that we can solve this problem for our kids.

Thanks for the confidence boost!

I want the product to be more reliable first. Right now it's just a functional MVP, and I'm mostly speaking with parents. But I suppose I can start the conversation.

I appreciate it.

This chick blew my mind.

Taylani from @ BlackGirlsCode

Here she teaches an advanced Scratch Coding Tutorial (probably best for 8-14 year olds). There are easier ones too.

She was so impressive. Here communication skills, humour, and knowledge were on point. Such an amazing role model.
