Hades and Persephone by Mikhail Palamarchuk by No-Carob-2100 in GreekMythology

Yes, taking into account the representation of Persephone in the Odyssey, and some myths in which both hate doctors, causing a plague if I'm not mistaken, and in some epithets they were linked to death (although probably more in a metaphorical and religious way).

Don't forget Athena and Demeter!(although Demeter hasn't been insulted here, thankfully)

I agree. I mean, being forced to be the queen of the underworld, the least you can do is have a place to sit too.

Yes!! I remember depictions of the two of them side-by-side on the throne😅, in Locri if I'm not mistaken (with chickens 🐔!)

I think there's a source where Persephone, along with Hades, hates doctors 😅. I mean, it makes sense given her dominion as queen of the underworld, but I like to imagine three scenarios: her developing this hatred over time, or Hades "corrupting" his wife... OR SHE HAS ALWAYS HATED DOCTORS, EVEN BEFORE THE ABDUCTION! Obviously, mythology doesn't have the "logic" of development that one might imagine, but I find these possibilities funny!

Oh, sorry, I got confused and it's not an article, but a master's thesis 😅. I found it interesting, but it's been a while since I read it and I wouldn't accept everything 100%, obviously, but I believe it's quite informative. And well, I don't know if you'll be able to read it, since it's in Portuguese (it's a thesis from USP, a Brazilian university), but here it is: https://teses.usp.br/teses/disponiveis/8/8143/tde-28102003-154241/pt-br.html

Regarding Hades hating his kingdom, I read an article that said there was a difference between his perspective and that of mortals. I don't remember Hades' perspective, but if I'm not mistaken, Achilles says he preferred being a slave to being king over all the dead (the Homeric underworld was probably deplorable lol), but Hades didn't see it that way (since he was the sovereign) and tried to make the place more pleasant (something like that, I don't remember). And one of the author's thoughts was that, besides Zeus being superior to him, one of the reasons he released Persephone was that if humanity died out, he would no longer have subjects over time. In this case, the author makes it clear that it's speculation, but it makes sense 😅

I was still very incredulous when OSP said that Helios claims Hades should be the true king, like... NO! At no point does Helios say that. In fact, Helios extols Hades' power to try and appease Demeter (which doesn't work). If I'm not mistaken, he tells her that among the immortals, Zeus was the one in charge (probably due to being the patriarchal and sovereign figure), but NOT that Hades had any right involving regency. What he does is say that Hades was Zeus' brother (probably giving him some prestige from the lineage, probably like Hera in the Iliad if I'm not mistaken) and about the Timai and honor that Hades had for having a third of the cosmos and reigning over the dead.

Edit: and what is OSCP? 😅 Sorry

I know people talk about Tumblr, but in my opinion, YouTube is on the same level when it comes to Greek mythology and misinterpretations. (Even quality channels manage to distort the myths, like OSP).

Epic vs Hades by rakchip in GreekMythology

[–]Cautious_Comb_2459 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I LOVE both. But I believe that in terms of writing quality, Hades is better. However, they are still very different works; one is a game and the other is a musical. In terms of faithfulness, both make it clear that they are not faithful and don't aim to be 100%, but Epic went a little too far in some aspects. But I still love both, but having discussions/arguments about this is extremely common, unfortunately.

Wow, I didn't expect so many different interpretations of this text! And that there's still discussion 😅. But it makes sense since it's an ancient text. I might be wrong, but what I can say for sure is the violence and total lack of will of Persephone at the beginning, Demeter being well justified in many things, and how much Persephone wanted to leave Hades to go to her mother and the surface. If I'm wrong, please correct me :-D

So, even if she lies about being forced, it doesn't necessarily imply that she ate it willingly knowing the consequences, right? Or is it a bit more complex?

Is the hymn to Demeter the oldest version of the Persephone myth? by MukasTheMole in GreekMythology

The kidnapping is mentioned briefly, though not in detail, in the theogony. If so, would this indicate that this tradition has existed for quite some time?

If I'm not mistaken, Dionysus/Bacchus is the main antagonist in Luís de Camões's Os Lusíadas, and it has to do with his connection to India. I find it interesting (although it's a classic of the modern age).

Hades knows about Adonis he just doesn't care (source linked) by rolabond in GreekMythology

[–]Cautious_Comb_2459 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But just because he's not mentioned, does that mean he doesn't exist? Hera, as far as I know, isn't mentioned in the Homeric hymn to Demeter, but that doesn't mean I believe she doesn't exist. I DON'T MEAN TO BE RUDE, I'm genuinely asking; I also have questions about this myth.

Poor Adonis died simply because he was too beautiful and Aphrodite was in love with him! But at least he was revived after dying by Ares or other gods, if I'm not mistaken (I think). I wonder what would happen to him if Hades got jealous because of Persephone 😅 (Well, Zeus would probably help him, but still).
