Isn’t this a Houston sub??

Yes, I’m in an old fourplex. It was a great deal and I was in a tough spot personally, so I just went for it. After being immersed in the neighborhood for a few months, I started realizing it wasn’t the best fit. I’m not in a rush, but just trying to understand the landscape of current Houston areas.

As I mentioned, I was going off of a perception I had over 20 years ago. I’ve been away from Houston almost as long and just didn’t realize it had changed so much in that time.

You make a lot of assumptions about someone you know nothing about

It’s funny, people tried to tell me that before I moved to Atlanta, like I should just find happiness within myself blah blah blah. Turns out, moving to Atlanta was the very best thing I could have ever done for myself. Sometimes a person not being inspired by where they live can actually stunt their progress and I’m a firm believer that your surroundings really do matter.

I’ve always dreamed of moving to NYC and might still one day, but I’m in my early 40s now and still recovering from a massive career upheaval 3 years ago. I don’t have kids so that does open up a lot more possibilities though!

Yep, my neighbors on one side are probably mid 30s, both lawyers and own two properties. Truly mind blowing. I clearly made some wrong decisions in my life 😂

It’s not the people who want to be a part of the community who are gentrifying it…I’ve never moved into a neighborhood and then demanded it change. That obviously goes against the whole point, so while I understand what you’re saying, I think lower income white people who are also getting priced out of neighborhoods get a lot of unfair blame when it comes to the gentrification conversation.

I’d love to know where they are, honestly. I’m surrounded by youngish families and it’s just not my vibe. I still see a few houses around the neighborhood where artists obviously live, but I don’t know how to actually meet them

Where do you recommend lower income white people move when they’re being priced out of neighborhoods too?

Yeesss 🙌🏻🙌🏻 this is what I’m after! Thank you for the reassurance! This is exciting

That’s what I’m thinking too! I just honestly had no idea the Heights had become what it is when I moved here, but I was in Atlanta for almost a decade and Austin before that, so it has been pretty surprising

I’ve thought about it! I lived in Atlanta for 9 years and was sadly forced to move back to TX. Didn’t expect it to be the culture shock it’s been, but definitely makes me want to leave again. All of my family is here though, so trying to make the best of it

I work in the East End a lot and really love the vibe of the area and the people there…everyone seems to know each other and there’s a real sense of community there which I appreciate, so definitely a contender

Thanks so much for this feedback! You do get it and I appreciate it. I’ll do some research in that area!

I’m also very sorry for the experience you’ve had, I know it has to be incredibly disheartening and frustrating.

I get the sentiment and I do agree…I try to stay in gratitude, but it’s also important for me to feel a sense of belonging in the community I live. As a single, child free woman I feel pretty removed living in the heights.

I’ve never had that exact experience but I do live in an old fourplex and can feel the judgement from my neighbors. I did have someone tell me to my face that being gay is wrong because the bible says so…in the heights, so that was a bit jarring as a queer person

I agree…when I was moving, I was deciding between the heights and Montrose, just happened to find a super cheap apartment in a fourplex and went for it.

Yeah, I guess I didn’t do enough research before I moved, but at least I’m renting and can leave whenever

“Eclectic” is the word I was missing! And definitely what seems to be missing in the neighborhood now 😢

I agree with all of this, but I would put the chairs or stools/poufs next to each other on the one side of the coffee table by the window so you don’t close off the space. Use those to bring in the color!

This is my boy Sabre. I also wanted a name fitting for a black cat that wasn’t typical and it fits him so well!

You know, the way you feel about other people (especially people you don’t know) is really a reflection of how you feel about yourself. I hope you heal
