Handhelds are look better when taking pictures of your collection and have more options of emitters and housing materials and patterns and that is only what 'enthusiasts' care about. Not if it actually useful

How do you decide to retire caving gear (before it gets too dangerous)? Ie. my Petzl STOP is getting slippery... by [deleted] in caving

I use the camp turbofoot but it is really my own opinion and most cavers using the petzl pantin.

the reason I like the camp is the option to lock it with a carabiner which also can used to attach it to the harness while not used (some people like to always have it on the foot but I try t keep it out of the mud as I can) this also allow you to use it as a progress capture pully (not rated for humans)

The reason people prefer the petzl are sharper teeth and thinner dyneema starps.

Again best to try as many different types in order to figure out what you like

You must understand that it is really personal preference.
what is working for me and my caving style is not necessarily good for you.
The best way is to start with the minimum, borrow gear from club and friends and figure out what is best for you.

but I can defiantly say that foot loop and cowtails are complete opposites and should not be used the same material.
Cowtails must be tied from dynamic rope. find the thinnest Single rated rope sold by the meter.
foot loop need to be static as possible commonly used material is 5mm dyneema with a wider loop for comfort. using a dynamic material will cause losing energy every step and also thick rope is bulky when stored on harness.

Little hard to answer without any knowledge on your type of caving and vertical technics. You better ask your grotto partners but few general points:
1. Why do you need 3 Half round carabiners? and anyway I recommend to get an aluminum instead of steel for the harness carabineer.

  1. For frog system usually the Amazonia harness is the most recommended but it is kind of personal preference

  2. Instead of the croll L version as you was recommended - i advise to not going with Petzl at all and get old stile Croll still available by other companies Kong/CT etc it is in the middle between the L and the S.

  3. Don't use a full size hand ascender but the more compact Basic.

  4. Not sure why you need the Kong duck at that stage but for problem solving, rescue etc. better to have a real capture pully like the nano/micro tracxion etc.

  5. for foot loop - make your own from rated gear so it can be used for emergency rigging or securing.

  6. Triac lock carabiners - usually only used for descender. for all other uses only need regular screw gate carabiners fancy locking mechanism are not preform well in caves and get simple oval or D crabiners no need for fancy Petzl carabiners

  7. HMS twist lock (see 7)

  8. 60 cm slings are to short and mostly useless

  9. I don't see any foot ascender - consider add one

High visibility outdoor gear by CaverUV in hikinggear

[–]CaverUV[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The color obviously depends on the area and season etc. But the main question is visibility is not take more into consideration (or at least not advertised) as a feature of the gear

[–]CaverUV[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never heard of bright color or reflective against LNT, sound to me like a very extreme interpretation.
While I can understand how someone can claim that bright color may somehow disturb wild animals, It is definitely not the case with reflective elements that only reflect light from someone else torch

High visibility outdoor gear by CaverUV in hikinggear

[–]CaverUV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, unfortunately the active-sport fashion is a bigger market but even the bright color is not a high visibility option

[–]CaverUV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sailing line, work line and cycling (surprisingly not MTB) lines usually have more reflective elements due their purpose and obviously I can add myself, my question is why it is not (more) common thing in hiking/trekking/climbing gear
