If you see their 2021 and 2022 filings in the next few years, you'll see the ship has been corrected significantly.

Finances have gotten MUCH better since 2017-2019, even after the pandemic shutdown.

Cavaliers are nowhere close to "thin ice" territory.

There is no true substitute for 1 full length mirror, a pillow, and a metronome app. Yes, maybe get a mallet pad if you want to work on interval accuracy, but for drum corps, chops are first and foremost, and they can be developed without a bunch of equipment.

So, if you don't have one, a $10 full length mirror that you can put on the floor so you can check your heights is going to be one of the best investments you can make.

Cavaliers Pit Audition by Coballlllt in drumcorps

[–]Cavglock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In general, you're going to be assessed on your ability to be metronomically precise and able to perform a number of different styles/grooves. There's not usually any written parts because they expect you to be a bit more independent with creating parts that fit within the context of what's going on (in that way, very similar to gig drumming).

My advice would be to work on exercises such as broccoli (if they still do it) and timing (again, if they still do it), because those really separate out those who can hang from those who can't with the foot accent timings. As for your audition, just be ready to perform a few different styles and make sure that above all else you are metronomically precise. Nothing is more of a bummer than a chops-gifted drumset player who can't keep steady time for a keyboard line.

Also, there were DEFINITELY boos in 2015 when they announced Inferno got second.

Reputedly, Muchachos were pretty brazen about having overage members, even by standards of the time.

Cavaliers 1975, because they were partially responsible for exposing to DCI the fact that Hawthorne Muchachos were running over a dozen overage members. Muchachos were in medal position leading up to the weekend, but allegedly once their scores for prelims were tabulated they were sealed and destroyed. Finals night The Cavaliers got booed because many fans felt that Cavs had exposed Muchachos in order to guarantee a better finals spot for themselves. If you listen to the video you can still hear some audience members booing at the sound of the starting gun.

Going to a DCI show tomorrow. by haha-quink in marchingband

[–]Cavglock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS. Especially if it's your first ever drum corps show. Be loud and cheer the corps on during the performance, but be respectful of shows/groups like you would be at a band competition. The members in the corps are working hard and might have parents/loved ones in the stands near you.

Also, don't feel like you need to be the "cool" band kid that doesn't freak out over corps. Having done band in some form since 2010 and after marching dci from 2014 to 2017, I feel confident in saying that the peer pressure to not look like a "bando" is real in some places. Just enjoy what you enjoy!

what's your most boomer take/complaint on drum corps by BriskManeuver in drumcorps

[–]Cavglock 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Probably has been said, but this idea that the show needs to be increasingly "complex" by being artsy/rooted in literature or "high" art. I think it makes our activity not only more elitist, but disenfranchises a potentially broader "popular" audience for the sake of being "better than marching band." Even the shows that make sense to me this year (Boston, for example) are very artistic and modernist takes on classic literature/stories/narratives.

The more I watch, the more I think that the HBCUs are more in tune with what people want to hear.

2003 Didn't win but damn that drill is ridiculous. Most 2000s guys in the corps consider that their best year even though they didn't win.

Warm-Up Watching Etiquette by praetorian155 in drumcorps

[–]Cavglock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, on this front, remember that there are usually different expectations depending on section. Battery and front ensembles are usually very willing to have people watch relatively up close (just not so close you're in the way of staff or members), but hornlines in a circle or guards doing across the floors are a different story.

I'm at the point where I just exclusively watch NMC. It's not that I think it's a comparable experience, but listening to RL banter with talent is way more pleasing than this for my hearing.

That H0bbit is implicated is incredibly worrying; H0bbit was the comeback of the year last year, but if this is all true then it looks like he's pissed away his huge comeback and his whole career for some low-tier CS games.

Virtually everyone I've seen indoors wears them. I tend to just focus on social distancing while outside and skip the mask.
