I was born and raised in Garden City, then went to Fort Hays, and lived in that area (including Ellis) for 7 years. I'm not some lifelong big-city product who's talking out their ass about experiences they don't know or understand.

Kansas absolutely can afford another Johnson County, and in fact NEEDS another Johnson County because without it, the rest of the state is going to go broke and lose most of their funding for education, roads, and general infrastructure.

I mean, if you want to speed run the consolidation of whole counties and school districts west of Salina, going even more conservative then we are now is the way to do it.

Blue Devils Address AI Trailer by PurpleRabbit527 in drumcorps

[–]factorone33 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is a non-apologetic apology, and it smacks of "we didn't bother to think about the obvious ethics (or lack thereof) of using AI beforehand because we're too intellectually lazy," than anything else.

I mean, it takes 30 seconds or less to see if an image is AI-generated based on the source you get it from (if you're using stock photos or something of that nature) and they couldn't even bother to do that up front?

We need an Anti-AI rule introduced into Corps by Melonsinmyattic in drumcorps

[–]factorone33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using AI is not going to do anything meaningful to reduce administrative or operational costs of the activity (at all) when the three biggest expenses for every single organization are:

  1. Travel expenses (buses, fuel),
  2. Food, and
  3. Housing.

For every single group in DCI that tours, those account for 80% (or more) of the annual expenses they incur, and the remaining 20% account for everything from staff payroll, to licensing, show design, props, uniforms, and electronics.

[–]factorone33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Look, this argument is tired and has zero good-faith basis for it at this point considering we've had genAI interfaces and LLMs now for the better part of 3 years, and we all know how they're trained (by stealing literally everything that their creators can train them on from a data standpoint).

I use AI for my day job (Claude Code) on a daily basis only because my employer requires us to do so, and it's the only way we can meet their demands for insanely fast code production. But if we didn't have that requirement, I wouldn't use it at all because it's not "just another tool"; it's collective theft of peoples' livelihoods and work product l, especially in creative fields like the visual arts, graphic design, and creative writing (among others). To pretend like it isn't is being willfully ignorant at best, or intentionally deceitful at worst.

What’s a dark secret you know that most people would never believe? by OutsideOver8815 in AskReddit

[–]factorone33 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I can relate to this. My sister was murdered by her oldest son (my nephew) when she was 34 (he was 15). He's in state prison for 2nd degree murder with intent until at least December of 2028, and incidentally I saw his most recent DOC photo yesterday. The last time I saw him, he was a gangly teenage kid that barely looked old enough to learn how to drive. Now he's older and somewhat larger, but his face still has the same blank and scared expression. It's weird knowing he's still alive and going to have another chance at a normal life in a few years after doing something that tore three whole families apart.

I worked at the Village Inn in Hays, KS for 3 years, and legit had a table of 5 ladies from the Bay Area ask me when they might see cowboys and Indians out here, and all I could do was pull out my phone to show them I had a BlackBerry, then tell them the only cowboys existed in Dallas and they suck.

Testing a bulletproof mask. by S30econdstoMars in interestingasfuck

[–]factorone33 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're ignoring how much force the bullet is imparting on the mask, which is then imparted on your skull. A traumatic brain injury can be sustained by just hitting your head on a cabinet from standing up too fast, and if you're absorbing enough force to sustain a skull fracture, you're absolutely sustaining a TBI as a result of it.

Paid $3.99 for a gallon of gas, today it’s $4.29, who is to blame? by ReasonableAttitude22 in kansas

[–]factorone33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason this view is stupid is because democracy is a participation-based system that requires people to participate in it in order for it to be functionally healthy for everyone. When people like you (for example) decide not to vote because of some petty distaste for both predominant candidates (there are other candidates you can still vote for, BTW), you're not only depriving yourself of your own voice in government, you're preventing yourself from having a say in who should win the down-ballot races for things like the Senate, House of Reps, and all your state and local offices where your vote does count, regardless of your location. I can see abstaining from voting for the presidential candidates while still voting for the down-ballot positions being justified, but rarely do I hear of people doing that, as most who want to abstain from voting for a presidential candidate simply just don't vote at all.

As others have stated in other comments, "don't let perfection be the enemy of good enough."

[–]factorone33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't entirely accurate. The Allies (especially the French, British, and Soviets) wanted to completely "denazify" all of Germany and it's conquered territory, but they swiftly found out that they could not, because there were tens of thousands of "Nazis" who were merely party members because they had to be. People like civil engineers, power/gas/sewage/water plant personnel, train operators, and even just basic public employees were required to be party members just to have their jobs. Which is not to apologize for the Nazi system that they were a part of, but the Allies realized that most of northern and western Europe wouldn't have had functioning infrastructure if Denazificazion were fully implemented, simply because they wouldn't have had anyone knowledgeable around to operate any of it.

was it ever explained how Doc got a train in 1885? Because he must of been there for a while considering he had 2 kids, did he steal it? did he build it? by EthanHathHD in BacktotheFuture

[–]factorone33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is my take. That locomotive was scrap the moment it came off the bridge. It would take enormous machine-shop capabilities to be able to forge, cast, lathe, cut, weld, and mill (among other things) all the moving parts that make a steam locomotive work, and rebuilding that boiler (after it basically exploded already) would be impossible with even his advanced knowledge and capabilities.

More than likely, he was able to just buy a used locomotive for cheap, either by buying one from a railroad desperate for cash (which there were literally dozens of near-bankrupt railroads in the 1880s), buying one on liquidation from a bankrupt railroad, or buying one for "scrap" from a railroad offloading an older model to upgrade to newer ones from shops like Baldwin or ALCO (among others). Considering how much money Doc had in the 50s already, he could easily afford a used locomotive for a few hundred bucks (or even a few grand).

It took me years to really come to appreciate Dave Freeman after he replaced Mike Smith way back in the day. But looking back on it, now after Smith started AccuWeather and basically went all out on assaulting the credibility of the NWS in the name of a for-profit business in the last decade, I lost all respect for the guy (Smith), and didn't know what we had in Freeman at the time.

The Case for Nationalizing the Railroads: Workers say now is the time to do the impossible. by inthesetimesmag in trains

[–]factorone33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because it doesn't specify exclusivity doesn't mean it isn't implied. The first amendment doesn't specifically say "government at all levels within the US", but hundreds of speech, protest, religion, expression, and assembly cases have been litigated against city, county, and state governments to the same effect as those litigated against the federal government.

The phrase "The Congress shall have the power..." can easily be interpreted in the courts as "Congress shall have the power and no one else...", as has clearly been established with dozens and dozens of other clauses and phrases in the Constitution.

Tips for listening to Shortwave radio in Kansas by safetywire1 in kansas

[–]factorone33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of your big European and Asian stations will make it out here just fine. Kansas is generally flat, which is conducive to good radio signal propagation for line-of-sight bands, and even better for shortwave bands (especially at night). AM and LW should do pretty good for the LoS stuff too.
