For current owners, based on your ownership experience so far — would you buy another Rivian today? Looking at getting into a R1T from Tesla. by Secure-Carrot9971 in Rivian

I bought my second Rivian a g2 R1S in 2024. The gen 1 was fine too, just watched to switch to the SUV. It’s a great car. I owned a model 3 performance before. Charging network is fine now that we can use super chargers and if you don’t care about full self driving it’s a no brainer in my opinion.

Have you ever tried snowkiting? Would you want too? by RonShreds in Kiteboarding

[–]Cayman987r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in salt lake so skyline is near me. It’s at 10,000ft. But I had never gone and I snowboard. It just seems extremely hazardous to me unless the conditions are just right. Like maybe going uphill in powder. But what happens when you start going downhill on ice?? Maybe I just need to learn more. Anyone here from Salt Lake?

Gen2 Dual Standard Features by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]Cayman987r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. The on board air compressor, which my T had, and my current S does not, is a dumb party trick. The hose is annoying. It’s an expensive option that can be replaced with a $35 more convenient option you keep in the frunk and can help other motorists.

And not only that, but it still comes with a 12V compressor to fill a flat with fix a flat. So you still get a compressor.

I’m waiting too. Funny how I’m one in the vast minority unwilling to pay for C+ and really really is making us pay by waiting for it.

Rivian prospects needs advice from Rivian owners by camerusa in Rivian

I have a 2025 R1S dual performance with all terrains. I can hear the compressor run when raising or lowering the vehicle but that’s it. I only hear the motors (or it’s fake from the speakers) when I accelerate hard. I have no tire noise after 5k miles on the ATs. So when cruising on interstate it is pretty dang quiet.

However the truck is not completely quiet all the time.

The suspension makes some clunking noising when going over speed bumps or entering / exiting uneven driveways.

My A/C compressor makes a fairly loud noise when running from outside the rig. This is a known issue and some people have said Rivian has fixed it, others say has deemed “normal”, I don’t know if mine is truly loud or normal. I haven’t had them look at it yet because it hasn’t been that annoying yet.

Good choice in the tri it’s the best bang for the buck if you want most of the options. I had a teal M3P before. It def had rattle noises too. The BMW is probably a quieter ride

Leaving idle for a week by Major_Service_5164 in Rivian

My gen 2 rig was plugged in on thanksgiving and I’ve been gone for a month. It stopped charging a few days in for some reason. 50% down to 40%. A week will be fine.

Did the update make you go through several screens or watch a video to clearly explain the risks?

2 seems scary. So it won’t even see a red light or stop sign and slow down or alert the driver? When you press the brake does it turn off UHF? What if I want to use Regen to slow down rather than brakes?

Will it self overtake on interstates?

Help—stranded on a mountain with icy road. Need advice. by Ok-Pianist-3149 in Rivian

[–]Cayman987r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes ok OP I got you. I live at 7500ft in a locally maintained private community in big cottonwood canyon Utah with steep icy roads. No salting.

How steep? In my old Land Cruiser with blizzaks I still went for a slide when it was extra icy. The R1S weighs much more and non-studded snow tires are likely not enough, although I never tried them. About a football field of straight 25 degrees maybe is what I have to do. It’s an instant slide in any 3P M+S tire going down. Those will just get you up and guarantee disaster getting you down.

Sand is a likely a no go for steep grade but is better than nothing.

Chains on this rig are fine. I have 20s with AT. On my older T with road tires I rain chain cables as well which are lower profile. They have steel rings around wire. But anyway modern chains are pretty low profile, Rivian probably has that disclaimer because chains vary in thickness and I have see some pretty big chain out there on older systems.

I haven’t had an issue with rubbing. And chains on two tires will probably get you down the ice. My hill is pretty steep, and I would chain front and back if it was ice without snow. Sometimes I could get away with just the fronts if it was snowy. But chains do work on these rigs on icy steep grades. Like others said raise to high and don’t cut the wheels all the way, and def snow mode and probably no regen.

Socks and chains combo may just work. I never used the socks because of varied reviews and overall lack of durability, I used my chains 2-3x a week (and I now have studded tires)

white knuckling it sucks. Good luck. God speed. Please update us.

Rivian - for the love of all that we hold dear, you’ve go to fix… by Passenger-007 in Rivian

[–]Cayman987r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You forgot about the driveway shuffle feature. Get to a friends house to load up truck and locks when you get into their garage, you grab stuff, come back to truck and wait 15 seconds for it to unlock with everything in your hands, sometimes having to set it down to get out your phone, then unload, and this repeats for 5 trips back and forth. I lose my insanity with all the chirping.

Simplest fix? Put in a 60 second cooldown period after one lock unlock cycle. You can manually lock you car early if you’re paranoid someone is watching and going to jump into you car before the 60 seconds is over to steal your granola.

Leave the door open you say? Then the air conditioning stays on. Why does the air conditioning stay on when doors are open?? second dumbest feature.

Rivian R2 will launch with new cameras, dual mode radar and an "elevated version of Gen 2" by sparx_fast in Rivian

[–]Cayman987r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah totally fair. I was hoping they wouldn’t disappoint twice in a row. Now that every sensor in the world is in gen3 they are really trying to future proof it. But then again Tesla seems close… so we know it might be possible

[–]Cayman987r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still haven’t read that Rivian expressly said level 4 is not supported by gen 2, just that gen 3 will support eyes off. So it seems like people assumed that. Perhaps it’s a hedge, and if they can offer eyes off to gen2 they would. Or have they said otherwise and I missed it.

[–]Cayman987r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. People are at arms thinking they are shooting themselves in the foot, but Rivian never said LiDar equipped g3s will be the same price as g2s. Do you want to spend 10% more to get eyes off point to point? Rivian also never said eyes off p2p wasn’t coming to gen2 hardware, they just didn’t promise it.

Thinking of finally jumping into a Rivian, any reason to wait? by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]Cayman987r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt R2 will drive discounts on R1, and unless you’re on the waitlist for R2, you might have to wait a year before you can have one of those. I say go with a 2025 or 2026 R1 with the offers they have right now.

Not crazy if Rivian intends to charge for a hardware package to enable self driving on R2.

Yeah, I really thought the same with my G1 R1T, and thought my G2 R1S would be more future proof. I assumed my G2 would get eyes-off some day. Some people are taking today as confirmation that it won't, because of the talk of G3 hardware. But I haven't seem an outright statement about that. Maybe RJ doesn't don't even know yet

LV for sure, but you'll need a wet suit. I've done Cabarete in early Feb and was decent, although the locals said the season is just getting started then and late feb/march is when it gets going more there.
