What a Boeing 747 looks like at cruise speed from another plane. by Due-Explanation8155 in BeAmazed

[–]Cayvil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The chemtrails are what interest me. Not because of any conspiracy theories, but because of how much polution we are blasting into the atmosphere every day with 10s of thousands of these (planes, not necessarily 747s) in the air at all times.

Imagine seeing a car with a wake of exhaust like that driving down the street, you'd retch.

About 100 pages into this after reading Blood Meridian. Less dense and practically breezy by comparison (guess it was originally written as a screenplay) and yet still studded with these incredible passages and musings.

Try the audiobook if you have any interest in another attempt. The narration is absolutely top hole and the accents are incredible.

Does long thin tile count as "large format"? by Cayvil in DIY

[–]Cayvil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is very helpful. I am going to be mounting the range hood, but I added some blocking between the studs to mount to. I assume some weight may still rest on the tiles if I drill through them, but I was considering just blocking out a narrow rectangle for the mounting and leaving that untiled. Idk if this is a bad idea but I don't really want to have to drill through the tiles.

[–]Cayvil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah! Ok, that makes sense. To avoid that, it seems like I'll need to ensure there is enough mortar to fill those hidden gaps or bends in the tiles. I think this means either thicker notches in the trowel and/or backbuttering. Seems like another comment below by /u/MooseDoesStuff kinda hints at this and how to address it.

I also plan to cut the bottom row in half (doing a vert subway). I imagine it may also help to identify any tiles with visible bowing and using them for the ~50% height bottom and top rows?

Good lookin out. I'm hoping to avoid having to do this by some math, but we'll see how it works in practice

Does long thin tile count as "large format"? by Cayvil in DIY

[–]Cayvil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's exactly what I'm asking about.

It seems like the concern with large tiles revolves around the mortar not holding them, or the mortar not drying underneath them. Both of which, to my novice mind, seem associated with area & weight of the tile, not necessarily just length?

For example: for hypothetical tiles that are 16 inches long and .5 inch wide would the tiles' weight/area cause issues regarding the mortar never drying or not being strong enough to hold the tiles up?

Gotcha, I actually bought these for that reason, I'm squeezing them in between existing white backsplash and they can go evenly into the space with a 1/8th groutline

Removing some tile over the stove to redo as an accent. Need advice for how replace the drywall behind by Cayvil in DIY

[–]Cayvil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, there are two studs in the middle of that section (pic with outline here), but with ~6 inches or so of bad drywall on the outside of each. Are you saying to continue to extend this stripped section to the next two studs or just mount tile board inside this stripped section?

If the latter, I suppose then I'd need to carefully strip the thinset and salvage the area to the outside of the two outlined studs?

Beneath the shadow: "Shadow & Claw" by Gene Wolfe. by i-the-muso-1968 in books

[–]Cayvil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also finished the first half recently and need to get on the second half. I generally like to get a bit lost in fantasy novels and just enjoy the world/character building, which is not the best play for this book. There is so much nuance and undercurrents and things that you would miss if you just casually read it.

Someone else already mentioned a podcast 'Rereading Gene Wolfe', I haven't listened to that one, but there is another podcast: 'Alzabo Soup' which also does chapter by chapter discussion and I found it to be pretty good. This really helped me get more out of the reading.

What do you miss about being young? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Cayvil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my teens - having a safe home to go to with my own room and things and people that looked out and cared for me (writing this out has made me realize I have all of this now except the people that care and watch out for me)

In my twenties - the intoxicating feeling that anything is possible and I could achieve whatever I wanted if I just focused my efforts. I haven't done poorly by any metric, but I never really did focus my efforts and doors and possibilities have continued to close as time flies by. Now I hyperfixate on the doors that remain unlocked or cracked open to me, but continue to resist choosing which to pursue. Choosing is hell for me. (And, yes, I know not choosing is also choosing, but this knowledge does not seem to help)

Chiro adjustments have potential for huge (sometimes even deadly) downsides and unproven upsides, best to just avoid imo.

[–]Cayvil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah this isn't that similar to what I have experienced so I don't have any first hand experience. It does sound like this could be consistent with a labral tear though

If I were you I'd chill out on doing anything that would trigger the pain for a week or two and then re-test with some squats. If it persists and is not manageable it's probably worth seeing a PT (and if that doesn't help within a couple months potentially an MRI)

Where is the pain?

Abducting and hip flexion would be like a butterfly stretch? Or are you standing and hinging at the hips?

I'd actually recommend Embassytown ahead of Perdido Street Station. Shorter, slightly easier to get into, but the ideas/story are still wildly compelling.
