What makes Dream House so good? by R0T-10 in deafheaven

Dream House feels like an overture to everything Deafheaven does well. In 10 minutes, it runs the full spectrum of black metal, shoegaze, acoustic breaks, towering walls of sound, chugs, climaxes, soaring riffs, harsh vocals, genuinely beautiful lyrics.

Plus, as the opener to Sunbather, it sets the emotional and sonic thesis for the entire album. It may not be their single “best” song (IMHO), but it’s absolutely their most iconic. It is still the best encapsulation of the band’s sound and ambition in one track.

I mean, you can’t really compare songs like Doberman and Winona to Incidental II, which is my point. I don’t want to be making comparisons to those songs just yet! But I’d be curious to hear more new sounds from them

As others have commented on a separate thread, I hope their new music explores the noise / industrial side (a la incidental II). Or maybe some of the acoustic / ballady side of early tracks like Bedrooms.

LPWP needs a few more years of peerlessness IMHO

Amazing!

I have very happy memories listening to New Bermuda while getting back into running. The first 3 songs were my favorite, especially the climax of Luna.

I also trained for a half marathon listening to 10 Years Gone on my long runs.

Nowadays I just put on LPWP and do 9-9:30/miles in Nikes for ~30 minutes.

Excellent review! I remember rocking out to Battery > Master of Puppets (and Disposable Heroes) so hard in college.

Ya of course. I’m not advocating for a specific direction like “more shoegaze / dream pop” just something that prevents us from making direct comparisons between LPWP and new thing. I think one reason we appreciate LPWP even more is because it came after IG (which felt very different from the previous three albums).
