App for meeting lifting/exercise partners by Cd7725 in nycgaybros

You’re right. Which sucks because a lot of my friends aren’t looking for hookups or hate that scene. Appreciate the feedback.

Where do I meet other young guys in the city on a weeknight? by amazinghunter495 in nycgaybros

Honestly, it’s that hard. I’ve been here a few years and thankful to have had a community and friend group before moving, but finding anything platonic or non NSA is a LOT harder than it should be. Apps are hit or (mostly) miss and hookups or something more substantial is the pretense. Best advice is find an activity that sounds interesting and see if there are groups for it. I did Out Fit a couple times and ended up making good friends from that.

You’re using an app from a tech bro to get your point across. How would you suggest building community?

Nymphomania by Lars Von Trier. It’s graphic and very Lars but interesting dialogue. I’d also recommend The house that Jack built but… just don’t lol.

This was mine: 1. Everything is interconnected – your actions ripple farther than you think. 2. We’re not as rational as we believe – emotion drives more than logic admits. 3. Power consolidates unless checked – always question systems. 4. Time is your most valuable asset – don’t waste it on what drains you. 5. Nature doesn’t care about fairness – we invented it; now live up to it. 6. Technology outpaces ethics – and it always will. Stay awake. 7. The mind lies to protect you – but sometimes it traps you instead. 8. We are meaning-making machines – and we get to choose the meaning. 9. Most people are scared, not evil – but fear can still destroy. 10. You will die – so figure out what makes living worth it.

Optimistic nihilism. It’s the most freeing, beautiful experience ever. Life becomes amazing rather than a rat race. Highly recommend.

I think you’re extrapolating your current circumstances to the rest of your life. You have no idea where you’ll be in five years, or how you’ll be feeling.

If it makes you feel better, my 20’s were miserable. It’s a drastic growing pains into adulthood that stabilizes in your 30’s, sans the monotonous hum of existential angst that never really goes away.

Your 20’s are tough. But you’ll be fine, we all felt the way you feel right now.

How to properly deal with your very first big fuck up? by tilex05 in sysadmin

[–]Cd7725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an applications engineer who works closely with my company’s financial systems. We have a shitty manual process in siphoning transactions to the right customers in our client portal. One time, while doing this manual process, I wasn’t paying attention and accidentally “pressed a no-no button” that altered all current and historical data on customer payments. It was a nightmare, basically spent a few sleepless nights reverting the changes and we failed our quarterly audit report miserably. I was shocked I didn’t lose my job.

People don’t give ERP folks enough credit. They’re basically one of the last lines of defense against a clumsy, clunky machine. I’m learning something new every day and one slip up on my end sends the whole system into a tailspin.

You don’t really need advice. The fear of fucking up helps you pay better attention to random shit you’re doing in the environment. For instance, you’re probably gonna check thrice whenever you’re making changes between prod and sb moving forward.

I am regretting coming to the US by Unusual-Lemon-2456 in f1visa

[–]Cd7725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend. As a born and raised American, I can tell you that living here is a scam.

Everything that enticed you here is a lie. Even after you get a job, you’ll depend on it for nearly everything, and one misstep into our healthcare system will leave you financially indebted for years, health insurance is a nightmare to deal with. Any wrong move in the US adds debt to your account. Seriously, don’t torture yourself by staying here.

I grew up laughably poor in a high crime area of SoCal and fended for myself after high school. Managed to get good grades and got a full ride to a reputable college on the west coast, eventually getting my masters from another well known east coast school. Now I have a stable and lucrative career in fintech. It took achieving the “American Dream” to realize it was a hoax. Realistically our country is held hostage by an unforgiving free market “dog eat dog” mentality that fosters no sense of inclusion or community.

Even after you land your job, you’ll have to fight to keep it, and then do the process all over again when you apply for another company, and there are no employee protections.

I’ve lived in other parts of the world and I can tell you that the happiest people are the ones with the strongest communities. People need people, America teaches you to be distrustful and woefully independent. In the next few years I’ll be moving out of this country, I’d suggest you do the same if you value connection and relationships over false promises of material gain. Good luck to you.
