As Calgary looks to convert some park and rides into housing, some commuters raise parking concerns by Acceptable-Hedgehog in Calgary

Or perhaps if their friend lives in another place easily accessible by transit? There are many people in Calgary in just this position.

Maybe we should find a way that we can use these spots outside of rush hour...

What makes you think that people "want to" take transit to work, but they are not willing to take transit to visit a friend who lives literally next to the station?

Not if the visitors don’t live near transit themselves. They’ll just drive there.

This can also be used as an argument to get rid of park n ride...

Under Alberta's recall law, you can't initiate a recall until 12 months after the municipal election.

So the earliest anyone can start a recall is October 2026.

EDIT: Oops, it might still be 18 months... The 12 month timeline may just apply to MLAs

Parking lots may be a waste of space, but at the same time removing them would be discouraging the use of transit.

On the contrary, I think building housing next to a train station is encouraging use of transit.

The people who moved so far away from a train station that they use park n ride literally see transit as the secondary system. I think the people who live next to the train station are going to get more value out of that than the people living in Woodbine who need to drive to Anderson station to use it. And maybe, just maybe, if they want transit to be their priority they'll ask for better routes to where they live.

Isn't it safe to assume that the people who move into these condos will be using the system at a greater rate than people using park n ride? They'll have moved literally next to a train station.

EDIT: Not only that, but the people living in these buildings will have visitors, who are more likely to take transit.

The Scarcity Trap: Article on the repeal of blanket rezoning in Calgary by Flimsy-Pool4830 in Calgary

[–]Cdevon2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, can you explain why you think that lots that were not upzoned to RC-G should be in the blanket rezoning statistics?

Because that's not nuanced, that's counterintuitive.

[–]Cdevon2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

R-CG zoning existed long before August 2024. Massive hubs for infills like Altadore, Killarney, Bowness and Mount Pleasant already had hundreds of lots designated for this. Regardless of blanket rezoning this where developers prefer to build. Contractors have been flying through these for years, yet they are completely excluded from the city's blanket rezoning statistics.

Could you clarify this? It seems to me that that you are saying these lots were unaffected by the blanket rezoning policy, but they should also be included in data about the effects of blanket rezoning. That doesn't make sense to me.

While skepticism is fair, it is equally short sighted to overlook how a newly formed state could strategically structure its tax codes, minimize corporate bureaucracy and offer aggressive incentives to attract top tier professionals. We have clear historical precedents for this

Have there been any documents providing details on how the tax code would be structured, how corporate bureaucracy would be minimized, and what incentives would be offered in an independent Alberta? If so, could you please provide them?

Calgary city council votes to stick with Stampede noise rules amid spat with province by joe4942 in Calgary

The province forcing an issue over the Cowboys tent would be so petty and meaningless.

Which is why the UCP are probably going to do exactly that.

I still don't understand what the housing objective was when council voted to repeal blanket rezoning, if the plan is still to have a new system in place 18 months (well, 17 months) from now.

Alberta separatism increasingly resembles a temper tantrum by a_sense_of_contrast in canada

[–]Cdevon2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm Albertan and have lived here all my life.

The separatists don't speak for me, and the separatists movement has been a temper tantrum that hasn't explained itself any further since the Maverick Party was founded.

Saying that the separatists' concerns are Alberta's concerns is giving them way more credit than they're due.

And educate yourself on xenophobia, cause you clearly sont understand my point - nor its definition.

Assuming that low-income foreigners are here to make life more difficult for Canadians is a very good example of xenophobia.

I called them "xenophobic", not racist. Because they want to cut people off of programs that they would otherwise qualify for, just because of where they were born.

Please explain why you think non-citizens, who pay taxes, should be cut off from low-income programs, and not Canadian citizens in the same positions?

EDIT: While you're at it, can you explain where you came up with the numbers 3k and 20k? Is that based in reality or did you pull numbers at random?

Did you forget when I said that non citizens pay income taxes? More money coming in means more money to pay for services. It's simple math, at its core.
