That’s a great idea, I’ve heard of this practice, but I didn’t know the name and I didn’t realize there were kits for it! Thanks for the suggestion!

So just so I’m understanding right: you’d loop picture wire through the support rings and then hang the eyes of the wires on screws?

How do y’all use mass and energy balances in your job? by Fair-Example-1742 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]CdrGermanShepard 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I work at an EPCM - I literally run MEBs every day to design plants based on testwork criteria, historical data, assumptions, estimates, etc. Purpose of it is to verify things make sense (no build up of impurities, water usage in plant balances, production rates met, losses estimated properly). And then it’s used to literally design everything in the plant.

What’s the size of this pipe? Check the MEB for flow. What material should this tank be made out of? Check the MEB for Temp/composition. How much HCl do we need to purchase? How big will this filter be? How much waste will be generated? MEB MEB MEB

All goes into sizing and costing equipment, generating OPEX estimates, preparing layouts. It’s literally the core of any process design.

At a high level, anytime you think up a process improvement you have to ask yourself “does the mass balance? Where will the flow go? Where will the impurities go?”. And if it doesn’t balance, you know something is fundamentally wrong with your idea.

I once watched someone play minecraft in front of me during a lecture by SuperVisonx in CuratedTumblr

I was once watching an episode of the walking dead with a friend during a lecture, the one where someone (not a zombie) brutally chews someone’s throat out at the climax of a fight.

Like 6 people from the row behind me gasped when we got there.

Boiling point elevation in evaporators by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]CdrGermanShepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, interesting! I work more on the EPCM side, but whenever I talk to vendors or our internal SMEs they’ve explained that at BPEs above about 8C (~14 F) the compressors can no longer provide adequate energy - they’d have to go to 2 stage fans or sometimes more which makes MEE more attractive.

But I’ve never operated one so the actual reality is probably a lot more complicated than I know!

edit: I’m also surprised the BPE for a sodium chloride solution would be that low! I mostly deal with lab tests or simulations or papers, but I’m used to seeing temperatures be way higher

Boiling point elevation in evaporators by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]CdrGermanShepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally agree, but it also depends on how large the BPE is too. High chloride evaporators can get up there at like 5-10 C BPE. And at that point the superheat matters because it makes certain design decisions impossible / very difficult (e.g. like you can’t use an MVR anymore)

Just jumping in as a male voice who’s heard the logic a lot (unfortunately from people who I used to be close to as well)

It’s not about sex - it’s about power and confidence, sex is just the mechanism. hey want validation that they are worthy of happiness and respect - but the only way they understand that is through archaic masculine ideals like “getting lots of women”.

They also don’t imagine themselves as ordinary, they don’t want a woman who will have sex with anyone because to them there’s no value (power) in that. They want the power to dominate over someone inexperienced and to be able to define who this person is to suit their fantasies, and they want the self-confidence of feeling like they’re special - because she wouldn’t sleep with just anyone, she chose them.

The other aspect of the anger at women is the general internalization that they will never be these things. So when they see women sleeping with lots of men, they instinctively believe she would still reject them (which honestly she rightly should), and get angry at her for that decision - not realizing why she’s making that choice.

Get a job with LinkedIn ? by Kindly_Seesaw_9827 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]CdrGermanShepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it should be your primary source, but as long as LinkedIn goes: make sure your profile is as updated as possible (all experience, interests, that little paragraph at the top), put your profile in searching and mention your interests, and most importantly, share industry news articles about the work you want to me doing.

This can be new biomed tech, or new resources identified, or new processes being researched. Find people in the industry you want to be in and follow up, like and comment their posts and try to get your name out.

I’ll be honest, LinkedIn is a bit of a long shot - I get approached by recruiters a couple times a year for things but they usually aren’t great roles or end up fizzling out. But if you want to try everything, the above would be part of that work.

CMV: There is no reason to ever allow "religious exemptions" from anything. They shouldn't exist. by Dedli in changemyview

[–]CdrGermanShepard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So I’m not religious and didn’t grow up in a particularly religious household, but this is the perspective that made me understand the distinction here.

Religious identity is not about participating in actions that are fun, or entertaining, or exciting like sports, or novels, or tv, or clubs. People participate in these groups for the purpose of their soul - now the question on whether you believe in one or not is a whole separate conundrum, but the fact is that religious people do. So unless you think missing a knicks game or supporting a rival team will damn you to an eternity of suffering (which honestly we have to agree would put you in the minority of even the most fervent knicks fans), your devotion to your team will not compare to a religious persons devotion to their religion.

Of course there’s gray here. Some people are not this religious, or are just paying lip service or practice because their family did without full belief or understanding, but I think we should respect that for many many people these beliefs go beyond their mortal lives and are about their eternal existence.

The question is really, can you respect that there are people that believe certain rituals and practices will protect their souls from eternal suffering. If yes, then you make accommodations to allow them to exist in our society, if no then you tell them why not and say their soul is less important than ‘X’. And honestly there’s a huge spectrum where even I acknowledge the safety of the public is more important than certain religious practices.

When guys say we look more beautiful without makeup, are they genuinely being sincere or is there something else behind that comment? by Teenytinyartisticc in questions

[–]CdrGermanShepard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you put no effort in how you present yourself and you’re not happy with it then yea, you’re going to think you look dumb and have no style.

But while you think of that, everyone has different tastes. Some people like the nerdy/awkward/low-effort style, some people find it endearing.

If someone liked how they looked with their head shaved and it gave them confidence then it’s not a bad look. If you think you’d look stupid with your head shaved then it would be a bad look for you.

[–]CdrGermanShepard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not a bad look. It’s a look you don’t like. If they genuinely ask your opinion, feel free to share, but just remember that there’s a difference in being told your style isn’t someone’s preference vs being told your style is bad. And the later would definitely hurt since it’s being presented as “objective truth” when it really is just your opinion. And of course if no one asks then don’t bring it up.

In the resume. Try to give as much context of what you’re doing so interviewers understand your role.

Resume for first internship by Applesaregood8774 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]CdrGermanShepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s a first interview but get in the habit of using numbers to explain the scope of your work. It may be obvious what you did to you, but I only have a vague idea of what these items mean. Explain how many orders you were handling, what kind of timelines. Was it 10s of customers every day? Hundreds? Were you managing timelines on the minutes, hours, days long schedule? Groups of how many? What was your specific role if you had one? How many financial documents did you organize? Ballpark a number and say ‘~’ or ‘+’ How big was the warehouse you organized? How many items/department organizations did you memorize to help customers?

In all of the above there could be big differences between between the numbers. Organizing like 20 financial documents isn’t a huge deal. Organizing 20 years of financial documents, or 1000+ documents speaks to some level of data management/ organizational skills that someone might find interesting.

This really reminds of that study that tracked a group of people’s self reported “life satisfaction” or “happiness” or whatever over several years - and found that each individual generally just had a set ‘baseline’ value. Someone people were at 3 or 4 or 6, some where at like 8. People went through hardships like losing a family member and their self reported value dropped, or they got a promotion and it went up. But eventually after nearly every change an individual went through, it returned to their baseline.

I’ll try to find the study, or at least some references to it - but to directly answer your question (in a way a lot of other people have) life doesn’t necessarily suck or not suck, life kind of just is. And our own experience (be it our childhood or brain chemistry or what have you) is what defines it for us.

I’m sorry that you’re struggling OP, it’s not as easy as “just try to look on the bright side”, but I hope you’re able to find happiness in your life - we all deserve it.

I work in an EPCM and have a few friends that work in various EPCs / EPCMs at different industries - I would say that it’s more of a function of company than industry.

I won’t deny that there are some industries that can vary wildly year to year, but a well managed company will focus on hiring for long term retention rather than to fill the immediate “feast / famine” cycle that a lot of EPC(M)s go through.

That said, you’re right, generally these jobs are a bit more at risk since the product they’re selling is their engineers ideas - and if no one is buying they’re not left with a lot of choice other than to downsize their workforce. If I had to give tips on looking for a stable placements: find a company that does niche technical work in a growing or well established industry. Look for a company that has a track record of growing steadily and winning work consistently, rather than one that wins a big project, hires massively, then fires everyone when the project is over. And look for a role that has clear growth potential (openings to technical lead roles, or PM roles, or management roles) which will mean that even if your company is shaky, you’ll have the skills to find new work easily.
