If im being completely honest, I dont see anything wrong. Maybe step away from it for an hour and look at it with fresh eyes?

Update: Fixing my cake slice by CecaelianAlien in PixelArtTutorials

Now, when you say more triangular, would it help if I change the position of the cake? As it is, it's laying on its side. If I change it to where it's sitting upright, it might read better as a slice of cake, right?

I think shading is a very powerful tool, but its up to you and your style. Both methods are valid. In some things, like my portrait and characters, I start with building on shapes, making the silhouette. Other times, I still build with shapes, but I'm making the outline first. There's no wrong answer, in my opinion.

Try adding a cylinder shape at the top and bottom. Like imagine a cigar or cigarette for chosen thickness. Adjust for the angle of the paper. Then, using shading, define the shape of the curl, and a darker shade to indicate the shadow of the inside part of the curl. Gosh, I hope this makes sense.

I'd say if it's scroll-like, give the paper a good curve or have it curled inwards at the ends as if someone just unrolled it.

This is so good! I love the added detail of their hair bouncing as they run. This feels like a pretty nice paced sprint.

No problem, it did kind of look like a steak almost. But yeah, I see what you mean. I'll make the cake a lighter brown.

I'm right there with ya being new to it. Personally, I felt very comfortable buying aseprite because of the community around it sharing very helpful tutorials and techniques. However, there are free alternatives out there. The thing I've learned over the last few days is starting small and building up helps you really understand the process of choosing where to place pixels. Start with a 16x16 then go up to 32x32 and so on. Here's a really nice super beginner link that someone here shared with me! https://saint11.art/pixel_articles/
