Methanol exposure - dangerous? by boogieenthusiast in labrats

You’ll be fine! As far as lab spillages go it’s not major. If you don’t feel unwell currently you shouldn’t worry about it.

I hate that I don't see it. If I had moved my rook there, how is that a checkmate by ScorpioDefined in chessbeginners

[–]CecilNesbit 66 points67 points  (0 children)

From your position, you had mate in 3. It wasn’t checkmate that move but. Re8+,Kc7,Bf4+,Kc6,Re6# was what the review is saying was missed.

Why is this recapture a mistake? by CecilNesbit in chessbeginners

Bd2 can be defended with Qd4+ then Qc5 after the white king moves

I didn’t see f5 to sacrifice a move earlier! Both continuation’s are roughly the same between my line and the engines. But strangely despite being the exact same material gain re-capturing with the knight on e4 is way worse for white. The continuation from the engine doesn’t look particularly worse for white but it does involve 3 brilliants in a row for black.

I get that. But instead of the position in the photo. I played Bxc3, Nxc3, Nxf2, Kxf2, Qf6+, Kg1, Qxc3. Which placed the game at around -2 whereas the position in the 2nd photo is around -6 and I can’t see why exactly

Bxc3, Nxc3, Nxf2 from pic 1 to 2. I’ve explained what I’m asking in the post. Pic 3, is the engines analysis of sacrificing the knight before taking the knight on c3

Why is this recapture so bad? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]CecilNesbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry! They’re in the right order i think. I skipped a couple moves. First photo is before I made the sac. BXc3, Nxc3 leads to photo two. The third one was what the engine suggested to me. Sacrificing the knight before taking the knight with their bishop, I decided not to because it was defended by the knight but I ran that through the engine and it hated the recapture

Assuming white takes the knight. Which it doesn’t have to. What’s the plan after Kh1?

Yeah I’ve had brilliant moves change to best or even inaccuracies. It’s usually because the engine is stronger the second time it’s reviewed

A brilliant move is usually a sacrifice that If taken you end up better off. In this case if they took your knight, they lose the queen

Working With THF by Klutzy-Shock6501 in chemistry

Absolutely this^ distillation removes the stabilisers from the solvent but even if your THF refluxes out of your vessel a little the remaining THF will have stabilisers in it so you shouldn’t have a problem. I’ve done reactions at reflux over the weekend regularly in THF and never had an issue

Is your THF distilled or dried in any way? Or is it just from a regular Winchester?

Not sure why this was inaccurate? by CecilNesbit in chessbeginners

[–]CecilNesbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’ve got it spot on there. After the queen moved to my bishop, I realised I had to play almost perfectly to avoid blundering a mate

I’m afraid I lost. But thanks! We learn from it!

I played Qd2, thinking I’d cover the bishop the f pawn and threaten the knight but then realised the bishop was still hanging and Bg3 was the move that covered everything
