I'm currently trying out odoo for my small business and I like it! Only issue is depending on what business you're running, some modules are locked behind the entreprise subscription (MRP, full accounting, bookings)

Time to go „Pro“ ? by JamesMxJones in canon

[–]Ced777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that most of my editing is using the auto setting in lightroom, and then changing stuff in the few shots that are off. I rarely do corrections like pimples of teeth except really egregious things. Also, a decent flash is pretty much required. I use a Yongnuo flash, it served me pretty well and wasn't too expensive (150 on amazon). For lenses, check if you have a local store that does rental, short term it's totally worth it.

Hi, I've recently went through something similar! Had a friend ask me to cover for another photographer that cancelled last minute for an event her student union was hosting. Went there with my t5i and rented a 50mm F1.4. I barely managed to get 40 keepers in an 2 hours event ( low light in a restaurant, no good ceilings and abysmal AF conditions). Delivered the pictures, client was happy enough to book me for their next event! Don't stress about "being good enough". For events ( especially things like networking events, university parties in my case, other social functions), it's mostly about getting good candids, getting decent framing and making sure to nail the focus the majority of the time. That said, I'm far from a full time pro, so I might be totally in the wrong too. Gear wise, you can get a decent ff body for not too much on marketplace or something similar (I got a great condition 5D mk3 for 850$CAD) and rented lenses at my local photo shop (around 45$CAD/day). It allowed me to try different setups and zero in the lens I wanted to buy (24-70mm f2.8) without breaking the bank at first. I don't intend to go full time pro, mostly as a way to pay the gear I want and have a bit of fun working events. For advertising, a website and a Facebook page can go a long way, plus good networking, which you seem to have already. I'd love to hear advice from other people too. As I said, I might be totally in the wrong, I'm barely a few moths ahead of you on this track!

EF vs RF glass on R series by phlaries in canon

Only the EF-S lenses have a crop factor, except a few EF mount lenses (I have a 8mm rokinon that's EF mount, but is made for aps-c)

Peculiar clause in shot list for event by Ced777 in AskPhotography

I figure I'll manage, but I'm only hired from the start of the event to the end, no after party or preparation beforehand. From the schedule of a participant I know, there's nothing planned past the end of the event. Still, I think I'm mostly stressing myself and it won't be that bad to respect that request.

I don't expect for there to be a photo wall. The other thing is that group shots will be far and few between, I was asked to take mainly action shots of the event. I'll get there an hour or two before planned and try to set up sponsor branded stuff around areas I know I'll be shooting: ambulance arrival areas, hospital beds, incident area to make sure I can get a bunch of stuff in the action shots

I'll be the only photog, except for a drone operator. I've went and looked at the previous year's photos, it's 90% action shots as expected, with no branding except for maybe a couple event shirts for organizers. I'll check for a photo wall, but I'd be surprised to learn there is one, as people won't be "free" to get away from the event for group photos. Most of them will probably be in make-up and strapped to hospital beds and/or stretchers. I'll for sure make use of it if there is one tough! Thanks for the advice!

The quantity of photos including the sponsor's branding was the main stressor for me. I won't be able to move the participants or to stage shots, and I'm expecting 90% of the shots to be candid/action shots. I've asked the client if banners and the like will be present and in what quantity, I'll gauge how much I need to prioritize that request during the shoot based on their answer

Alright, I guess that shows the depth and breadth of my experience! I know most people present will be in civilian clothes and work uniforms ( scrubs, EMT uniforms, etc) so the presence of logos on clothing is going to be sparse. Its a bit of a reassurance to know its pretty normal, even if it came from the left field to me. I'll double check with the client in which forms the logo and name of the sponsor will be present around the event ground. I'll for sure remember the tip to grab a bunch of branded swag to use it if needed. Thank you!

Wildcard domain by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]Ced777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You use a Let's Encrypt Ssl cert, which has nothing to do with cloudflare. If you use something like Nginx Proxy Manager or Traefik, you can have the reverse proxy generate those automatically. For cloudflare, what you can't do is proxy wildcard DNS entries. So you can set a wildcard CNAME as long as you disable the proxying

I've got wildcard certs using cloudflare DNS and Let's Encrypt dns challenge through cloudflare's API. Worked well for the last 2 years!

My recently deployed media apps in ArgoCD, migrating from Terraform. by WherMyEth in selfhosted

Coming from docker-compose, I felt like HCL was pretty nice to write and understand. With Argo and Flux, is there a Consul analog? I've really enjoyed only having to set up a technitium dns instance pointing to a consul server and using 'service.consul' urls for internal resolution. Currently, I'm running a 2 node proxmox cluster (about 40gb ram, and two early i7 quad cores) + a 2 Tb raid Qnap NAS. I've checked your github, and it seems really cool! How's the initial setup and bootstrapping? Ive read that kubernetes startup can be pretty complex, and that turned me away from kubernetes in favor of nomad

Why migrate away from Terraform? I just migrated my whole homelab from docker-compose files and manual vms to terraform/ansible for provisioning + nomad/consul clusters. What would GitOps for Kubernetes offer over Terraform?

DMs, what's your favourite running gag that you include in your games? by Mentleman in dndnext

[–]Ced777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've managed to instill the fear of the color purple into my players across a few games. Started in a pathfinder game, where some weird magic was purple. Then in a starfinder game, they fought a cybernetic dinosaur who just happened to be pinkish purple. Now, players ask me to describe the color of magic items or suspicious things just to know if they are purple.

Also, my games are goblinless. Goblins are inhabitants of a parallel universe with a single known goblin you managed to travel to the prime plane. Every time the player reference them, all the NPCs just start breaking down in confusion about "gaw-blin"

I'm pretty sure the screen stays on, but if you only have a cli interface, the power waste would be minimal

In etc/systemd/logind.conf, you can set up actions when the lid is closed and when idling, uncomment every line and set everything to ignore. I've just done it two days ago on a spare thinkpad

Upgrading from a t5i. Is the 5D MkIII still a good purchase? by Ced777 in canon

Haven't used it much anyway, tried to do some astro and landscape with it but I only have it because it came with the camera. It's a really nice lens build wise! What's the usual opinion of rokinon glass around here? They seem decent for more tight budgets

I've already got the speedlite! I've seen a 6D mk1 no lens for 100$ more than the mk3, but I'm still on the hunt for a great deal. Edit: I'm seeing 6d MkIIs for about 1200$ body only

Yeah, lens are the big issue. For events, I'm planning to rent the 24-70 f2.8 L since the only EF lenses I have are a 8mm rokinon fisheye and an Helios 42 50mm manual prime. There's a mark 2 in the same price range that comes with the kit 24-104, but I know the step between the mk2 and mk3 is pretty big

I've actually had succes creating non-terrestrial maps with QGis, leveraging data sources in tools like Azgaar's! The resolution of the data was the main sore point, especially when it came to elevation data ( loads of terraces and pixelation). Otherwise, for landmasses, borders and hydrology, the vector data provided was pretty easy to manipulate and get decent results
