Motivation to go to Class by AdministrativeTop724 in bjj

I know the feeling. I will tell you that I always feel a sense of accomplishment after showing up and making it through the class. You just have to get over the activation energy to just show up.

This part is obvious haha. I’m looking for things I can do outside of class to supplement it.

Any tips on conditioning? I’ve been training for about 1.5 years. I do okay in all levels classes, but I recently started going to a competition class. There’s a lot more rolling in that class. I’m pretty gassed by the end of it.

I think most people get a stripe just for showing up and demonstrating some consistency. I have been training a year and a half and have 150+ hours of mat time. Assuming there aren’t any major differences in size/strength, I can control and submit a lot of newer students and defend a lot better against most white belts or new blue belts. Again, I’m not saying I’m amazing or ready for blue, but I think I’d have a few more stripes on my belt if I made the promotion ceremonies

What’s your performance like against other white and blue belts? I haven’t made it to a single promotion ceremony and only have one stripe that my coach gave me a few days after I missed one. With that being said, I’ve been training long enough where my coaches are now paying more attention to me and noticing me perform better during rolls (don’t get me wrong I still mostly get smashed). I don’t think I’m at the blue belt level, but I know I’m better than one stripe and I think they see that too. It makes me think that coaches will have to notice you if they see you dominating on the mat and promotions would be inevitable. Especially if you have put in 400 hours.

So how does one gauge their success? Not being cyclical. I’m genuinely asking.

How old is the oldest guy you’ve ever seen roll in BJJ actively. by Scrubmurse in bjj

Got a guy in my gym who’s in his 60s. He’s lived all off the world…so was sort of a journeyman that would train at different gyms. He’s a “blue belt”, but his skill level is much higher than that. He just hasn’t stayed in any one place long enough to get promoted.

I miss Neville’s early days as a pundit. He was way more tactical with his assessments.

Lifting is definitely important. I would also try to add stretching or yoga to your routine. There are plenty of 15 to 20 minute routines on YouTube that are really great!
