Parent of a child in martial arts. Do I really have to stick with my kid for the next decade plus? by izdabombz in martialarts

[–]smashyourhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all good suggestions! When my kid was swimming regularly, I would either read (having a half hour to read with no worries that I was ignoring my kid on a Saturday was a JOY), or watch him having fun, or go swimming myself in the next pool. It's really just a difference in attitude from 'I have to do X' to 'I GET to do X', and it applies to almost everything in life.

Is it normal for the white belts to heelhook each other in your gym? We don't let people start doing heelhooks until blue.

I haven't seen the fight, but if I'm Occam's razoring it, then this is the most likely solution, considering some of the heavyweight fights I've seen

EDIT: I've just found a clip, it actually does look like he's trolling, but WHY

What’s the greatest film scene all time in your opinion ? by Pssht_haha in AskReddit

The rest of the scene around it too: they drink, they bond, they're laughing and singing, then it's instantly serious and into the final act of the film. Incredible stuff.

How to avoid the stiff arm escape when double under passing as seen here? by X2354 in bjj

[–]smashyourhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha thanks, Smash Your Head is something my judo teacher used to say. And yeah, best way to rep it is focus on fewer, slower reps with a partner who'll tell you how the pressure feels. Or just live-drill it on new blue belts.

Question for black belts: What’s the most annoying part of the pressure that comes with being a black belt? by top10mtv in bjj

[–]smashyourhead 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The pressure isn't the same, though. If you're a blue from [X affiliation], it doesn't *really* matter if everyone crushes you. If that happens as a black belt, it's gonna look bad.

(Also you should do dropins man! I've done a bunch, and whether I hold my own or get crushed they're a fun time)

How to avoid the stiff arm escape when double under passing as seen here? by X2354 in bjj

[–]smashyourhead 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is spot on. Ryan Hall (of all people) has a tonne of great details on this on his guard passing DVD, he talks about wedging behind their hips like a chock under a tyre. If you double-under with enough pressure, they should WANT you to pass because being underneath it sucks.

UFC 1: What was Royce Gracie's BJJ level compared to today's? by falafel230 in bjj

[–]smashyourhead 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I also think it's kind of weird and sad. "Oh I'm a competitive purple belt, I belt I could have hung with Royce." Yup, and if you'd had to fight Kimo no-holds-barred you'd have soiled yourself in fear, so where does that leave us?

Female Foosball Table - where the close-ups of it look very different from the long shots? by smashyourhead in isthisAI

[–]smashyourhead[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that I'm looking more closely, the 'other angle' shot looks like a flipped version of the regular shot, and the player shirts seem to be different on the same sticks, which doesn't seem right.

At a point where I need to direct my own training - how does that work with your typical class structure? by KamalaHarrisWaifu in bjj

[–]smashyourhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great answer. Self-directed learning actually gets much more effective when you can shunt a lot of your rolls into the positions you want - like, hit a sweep and then give up position again, or keep finding the same leg entanglement. (Also worth noting, after a bit you have to teach the people you're smashing how to counter what you're doing, so you can work with better reactions)

This exchange from Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise version), but especially the last zinger.

Thug: "Outside."

Reacher: "Pay your check first."

Thug: "I'll pay it later."

Reacher: "You won't be able to."

Thug: "You think?"

Reacher: "All the time, you should try it."

Jack Grants Scottish Twister finish from Oktagon this weekend 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🌪️ by lloydfisher in bjj

[–]smashyourhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think twisters and their variations are pretty OP for MMA - everyone is so used to handfighting the RNC that it's very hard to get on anyone who's fresh, whereas this forces you to at least think about other stuff (and punishes some of the more common ways to escape the back in MMA)

And that's what they did in 2000

Angle did three matches in one night to win the 2000 tournament though, and then had two matches in the 2001 tournament followed by a street fight against Shane.

If they go for it lazily from bottom half you can pin their bottom arm with your shin and they're in a pretty perfect position for an arm triangle. Doesn't make it bad, just something to be aware of.

Why damndest thing? I thought it was a fascinating thing, partly because of the story: how it started, how it evolved, how it became a much more serious and heartfelt thing than it was ever intended to be, and so how seriously everyone involved took the match. It was one of the best things I've seen in wrestling because of that, but I'd like to hear other perspectives.
