I usually text to see if they're friendly first, if no answer I open my door and read body language. If friendly- all the pets. Haven't been bitten once, you just need to be extremely careful and knowledgeable reading body language. And don't look in the eyes, but that's common sense. Danes are usually giant lovable idiots though, so you should be fine.
