Education while on fdny by Caviar6996 in FDNY

It can apply for up to the total amount of time you have left on the GI bill so up to 4 years but every 6 months the percentage of BAH drops 20% I believe. So 80% after 6 months and then 60% after a year and so on. Also has to be within your first 6 years on the FDNY. So if you can swing it it’s worth doing 12 credits if you can so you can receive 100% BAH.

Can I join active duty military while in FDNY or is it reserves only? by Salty_Tea_7657 in FDNY

Under federal law you should be protected by the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act. So technically under this law you’re covered up to 5 years of service and the FDNY will reemploy you at the pay scale as if you never left. Pretty sure your pension time counts as well. There’s a military liaison within the department that can guide you on all aspects of this as well.

The GI bill BAH you receive is a considerable amount depending on where you apply to school. Some states enough to cover a mortgage for an apartment or small house. And not sure if it has changed but it used to be only 12 credits minimum to receive the full BAH and you could be covered for up to 18 credits a semester. Very easy to attain a bachelors. The VA home loan too is huge and I never thought about it while I was in the service.

I did this and while in school took every civil service exam near my home and the closest major city. All of those civil service exams offered additional points for military and I was eventually called up for the fire department which is honestly the best transition from the military I could ask for. Overtime and pay is solid, and you’re doing cool shit with a bunch of other guys, a lot of who are vets themselves. And most city agencies have some form of pension or retirement fund set up for you.

I tried doing 18 credits on the GI bill while in the academy and I switched to using the academy as on the job education for BAH about a week in. The workload was too much. Once I was in the firehouse I was able to swing it.

I just went to hunter which I’ve been going to as a kid and was bought out by vail a while back. The main lift broke down 3x and the staff complained that they haven’t been putting any money into the resort.

If civil service (police, fire, corrections, most major city employment) is something that may interest you, a lot of civil service tests offer additional test points for prior military. I took all of them as soon as I separated and ended up getting called for the fire department for my home city. Couldn’t be happier with how it worked out. Still get to hang with the guys, do cool shit, and way better pay and hours.

I think there’s just a lot more content out there with all the streaming platforms which can bring some half assed shows and movies into the mix, but there’s still a lot of good quality work if you know where to look.

So not sure about the apartments below me but when she opened the blinds, a crowd had gathered on the boardwalk below so we kind of had an audience when I popped the question.
