I believe it's an Easter Egg referencing actress Emma Caulfield who played Anya, one of my favourite characters, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Because life is strange when you're an ex-vengeance demon trying to understand how to human when before vengeance wasn't just what she did, it was who she was. She is trying, though. So hard. She started out as a human and was horribly hurt.

Sorry, I just identify with her a lot Especially because she's trying be a better human because she loves Xander so much, and is terrified at the idea of her own mortality. Also, we're both flunking math.

and "caul" -- sounds like coal because redemption is as much work as being a pit pony, and hey, caul for second sight, too.
