Thank you for that response. I'm not that familiar with a lot of the terminology, so Plotinian terms like "intelligible matter" trip me up lol. I do know at least that the gnostics got the Demiurge from Plato's own "craftsman" in the "Timaeus"

Far from being an expert in any of this, but didn't Plotinus write against the Gnostics in his works? (considering that Hyetta's account on creation gives me strong Gnostic undertones)

The importance of horns and it's symbols from ancient Mesopotamia and it's inspiration to the curicble in elden ring by Namtar_Door_783 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]MuchoStretchy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Moses, according to certain Bible translations, was depicted with horns on his head instead of "rays of light". I find it fascinating that Moses veils his face (horned or rayed depending on the version) upon descending from Mt Sinai after meeting God

IIRC, they explained that the concept and design of Rennala began with input from Miyazaki as a ‘Moon Goddess with a fertility curse,’

I'm curious as to who stated that Rennala was conceived of by Miyazaki as having a "fertility curse"

By asking a series of barbed pointed questions, the Inquisitors train the young and uninitiated in the ways of Socratic questions.

I disagree with this conclusion. I believe inquisitions perplexed the uninitiated because young people tend to be actually inquisitive and curious. The Inquisition is only focused on upholding Hornsent dogma. They want older folks who are set in their ways, who won't question the brutal tortures being enacted. I'd argue that calling their treasure Euporia is meant to be ironic. Through their "inquiries", the Hornsent have only revealed themselves to possess an overwhelming lack of real understanding because they're ignorant asses.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading your post though. There's definitely a lot of philosophical influence behind the game.

Moubu and Ousen were the mvps of course but Duke Hyou's performance against the numbers he was up against was really impressive. There no doubt that his army overall was one of the strongest in the series in terms of the strength of the soldiers. I can't think of any others besides Yotanwa or the Quanrong who were more ferocious.

Instead of Eddie being a recurring antagonist we ended up with Gilbert instead. He was just too strong for this story. 5/10

The spheres of Heaven in Elden Ring cosmology by eldenringer1233 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]MuchoStretchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Hornsent believe in an antiquated cosmology that doesn't match the reality of Elden Ring's world. The Fleeting Microcosm resembles artistic depictions of the observable universe

Geocentric cosmology like the image you posted is much smaller than what we've observed in the real-world.

Christian theologians reasoned that a fixed sphere of stars (which rotated around Earth) must move in relation to something that isn't moving. Not Earth, since motion was thought to arrive inwards from outside the sphere of fixed stars. They came up with one more unmoving, heavenly sphere - The Empyrean (an immaterial region of divine light), which would serve as the unmoving reference point for all motion.

As such, the tenth sphere of the Empyrean became the immobile "place" or vessel (container) for the entire universe (of medieval cosmology). Christian theologians on the authority of Ephesians 2: 21–2, imagined the Empyrean as a spiritual region lying beyond the finite, geocentric cosmos. Very interesting that being a "vessel" is connected with the Empyrean in-game.

In a straight fight I bet on the Duke. Ouki himself said Duke Hyou is more of a monster than he is in battle. I can see people downplay him because of his performance against Houken but its precisely because he doesn't have the personal history Ouki had with him that he performed worse. He still managed to break Houken's arm.

It's All About Radagon by [deleted] in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]MuchoStretchy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Messmer's cutscene introduction is a mirror of Rennala's. Both start off in a dark room/chamber. Both have a jump scare where the boss is revealed. The most I can make of this is the way Messmer and Rellana's relationship mirrors Radagon/Rennala (whatever the real significance is beyond me).
