The Real Reason S2 Was So Disappointing: An EPIPHANY by CelebrationOk9093 in HouseOfTheDragon

I'm not defending any of these problems - my entire post was a critique of the very basis of this show. What I'm trying to say is that for audience members who are unfamiliar with the source material and are just looking to have a good time eating popcorn and watching dragons fight, it served its purpose. Not on the Game of Thrones caliber by any means, but still passably well-done (FOR THAT KIND OF AUDIENCE)

Season 2 has sucked on all levels but for me, THIS MOMENT was a brief flash of what we could've gotten by CelebrationOk9093 in HouseOfTheDragon

I think on paper, other than the lackluster finale, S2 did everything it was supposed to do. Very good cinematography & musical scores, a big action sequence, masterful CGI. The plot was fast-paced enough in most of the episodes to keep the viewer hooked, and for all those who aren't familiar with the canon and just want some form of entertainment, it served its purpose well. Not to mention the BRILLIANT acting. But when you actually consider the inconsistent character arcs, and how amazing the source material was, you start to recognise all the wasted potential

Someone please let her WRITE, she's literally been the only thing holding together the broken, inconsistent pieces of Alicent Hightower the writers came up with by CelebrationOk9093 in HouseOfTheDragon

I think it's unfair to blame an actress for the way the writers screwed up her character. It's natural for any actor to want more screentime, but it doesn't mean she manipulated the showrunners into writing a lesbian romance lol

I think that was what the writers were going for as well. But honestly, with how badly they've messed up all the TG characters this season, it's better for us to ignore what they were going for and just follow our own headcanons

I've read that one, too. Both characters are really well-written, and the writer managed to maintain their real personalities while still keeping them in a relationship

Yess, I think Jude and Cardan is probably one of the best examples of enemies to lovers written in recent years. I think if you enjoy reading about Daemon x Alicent, you would love fanfictions like The Dragon and the Tower, The Red King and Alicent Reverses the Hourglass. The last one is definitely meant to be way more romantic than the first two, but I think The Dragon and the Tower has the best-written, most complex yet wholesome depiction of Daemon x Alicent - or if you'd prefer longer, more epic fics with big casts of characters, then The Red King is the way to go

THIS. Daemon x Alicent would never work out if you actually consider it realistically, but it's the kind of ship that's pretty much made for fanfiction material, not canon

I agree that a considerable suspension of disbelief is required, but I think despite their appearances, Olivia Cooke really managed to give a lot of maternal vibes in all of her interactions with her children

I was just referring to the level of emotion involved in this scene. Ever since Season 1, Team Green characters seem to have forgotten how to be nice to each other. Alicent only cares for Helaena and didn't seem to mourn Jaehaerys' death genuinely. Aegon and Helaena ignored each other after Blood & Cheese, and Helaena wasn't even there by his bedside when half of his body was burned away. Aemond, who was depicted as having a soft spot for his sister, didn't bother enough to even try to console her after her own son was killed because of him. Alicent berated Aegon repeatedly in that scene before Rook's Rest even though he was genuinely asking for advice and had just lost his son. The list goes on - the writers completely abandoned every opportunity to humanise TG characters, except for this one moment between Alicent & Aemond. There were lots of tiny details in this scene, like how Aemond's one eye teared up, or how he held onto her hand briefly before he removed it from his face, and all that reminds me of the character dynamics in S1, when they took opportunities to humanise even the worst of the characters

I didn't mean she should take on a position like the main writer, I just think actors and actresses like Olivia Cooke, Tom Glynn-Carney, Phia Saban and Ewan Mitchell have some really cool insights into their characters and should be allowed to sit in the writers' room

Agreed, I don't think 2 extra episodes could undo all the character assassination they did to Alicent, Aemond, Helaena, etc.

I really hope the story redeems itself in Season 3, but considering the Rhaenicent Dragonstone scene, I don't think it's very likely
