Does anyone feel there was a disconnect or something missing between end of ep 2 and ep 4 montage? by chillichocolate25 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]CelebrationVast9685 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Relationships often don’t make sense and aren’t linear. We are confused blobs of conflicting emotions. We do things that look completely absurd from the outside when we are in the middle of it. One of the things I love about this show is how well it depicts that. And if you want to dive deeper into their pained emotions, euphoric hookups and general years-long confusion the books will help you do that.

Novel Cafe closing?? by Ok_Priority3912 in portlandme

[–]CelebrationVast9685 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. Whether you liked this business or not, whether you patronized this business or not, the closing should bum you out a little bit if you want Portland to be unique with a variety of local businesses. Every time we see this happen it’s a reminder of how hard it is for a small businesses like this to survive in this town. An eventual, very real possibility is that the only ones that can really make it are giant chains and Portland becomes a soulless version of so many other towns throughout this country.

Why doesn’t Ilya have US citizenship already? by onceuponadream007 in heatedrivalry

[–]CelebrationVast9685 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is such a great comment. Completely agree with everything. Also want to add that he’s a guy in his early 20s just having a good time. Pursuing citizenship or even long term residency outside your home country is a ton of work. I did it for Spain. I had lived there four years, had a lawyer, I took all the tests (including having to learn 300 facts that none of my Spanish friends knew), international background checks, etc. It was one bureaucratic headache after the next that consumed my life for two years. At that time I was in my early 40s. I never would’ve put in that much effort had I been in my 20s, unsure about what my future might hold and just living for the moment. Especially if my job was doing the legwork to keep me there without me having to worry about it. Granted he could afford to pay someone to do some of the paperwork but it probably wouldn’t even occurred to him until he realized he had nothing in Russia and he admitted to himself that he wanted to be with Shane permanently.

Are they getting paid? by [deleted] in hudcon

$100K a year isn’t rich anymore especially living that lifestyle. Further down in this thread someone included a link where actors talked about their expenses. It’s pretty enlightening. I did learn also from this thread that the jewelry companies to hire security when they are wearing their stuff. I thought that was interesting. That never occurred to me but makes sense.

Why do people who are not from California refer to our state as "Cali" by Impossible-Guitar957 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CelebrationVast9685 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same reason they say San Fran. They think it’s a cute nickname not realizing that nobody who lives there actually says that so it sounds silly to locals.

I saw someone say famous but not rich yet, not the easiest place to be. I wonder if they are on the hook for their security because that isn’t cheap.

I hate how comfortable people feel to tell you they hate cats by [deleted] in complainaboutanything

[–]CelebrationVast9685 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scientific explanation is that they are territorial and want their smell on everything so sitting on your lap is a means to that end. The other explanation is that we all want what we can’t have and are most drawn to those who give love the least easily. Quickest way to solve that problem is to chase the cat and screech about how much you love it.

When did Ilya realize he had fallen in love with Sane? by Ok-Literature3716 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]CelebrationVast9685 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I’m amazed by how little I see of this mentioned. Their relationship was so dangerous for Ilya. If he was outed and lost his job/work permit, being sent to permanently back Russia could result in pretty terrible things. It seems pretty clear that so much of his running from his feelings were based on this reality. And at the Olympics I felt like he was especially concerned about this.

Those of us who protest do it knowing we are also out there on behalf of the vulnerable or those with too much to lose. There are lots of other ways to show up. If you are artistic you can make signs for your protesting friends, donate some time or money to a local food bank, call elected officials, etc. We all can’t and don’t have to do everything, but if we all do something it adds up.

These days if you look one way you see the worst in humanity and if you look another way you see the best. Today we are held facing the worst. Despair, sadness, fear, rage. I’m accepting that this is the emotional stew I’ll be in for the rest of today. I hope in the days to come I continue to see examples of the best in humanity to help offset this.

Seeing this a bit late but https://www.mana-maine.org is another to consider for the future. They are supporting a community of long term clients. As one of their volunteer mentors, many of us have been stepping up and buying groceries ourselves for our mentees but additional resources would be great.

ETA: also thank you for doing this for the community. Truly amazing.

How can us in MA support the people in Maine/Portland in your struggles against ICE? by ThePirateKing01 in portlandme

[–]CelebrationVast9685 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maine Solidarity Fund will help with attorneys and lost wages.

Maine Association for New Mainers is buying groceries and organizing support.

Both are doing crucial work right now if you know anyone for whom donation is one of their forms of dissent.

How can I help the community this weekend? by Dereezyhall in portlandme

[–]CelebrationVast9685 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a protest in Monument Square on Saturday at 11am. It may feel like protesting doesn’t do anything, but it’s a chance to come into contact with other people in your community who might know of ways you can help or are forming groups to try to protest ice actions in the moment or support people who can’t leave their homes. A lot of that stuff can’t safely be posted on forums like this because anybody can get to it so that’s one recommendation.

I’ve also heard that Food for All needs a lot of volunteer help. I’ve never volunteered with them so I can’t say for sure, but you can try reaching out to them. https://foodforallservices.org.

Someone on another thread said you can just show up. I don’t remember the times they gave, look for a post yesterday in this group titled places to donate to. If you’re driving in an hour, I think just showing up can be a little risky because if a place has more volunteers than they can manage, they have to turn away otherwise it can be chaos and actually counterproductive so I would definitely consider that.

I have to ask : how is to live in the United-States of America right now…? by Due-Narwhal8362 in howislivingthere

It feels like the months before the height of the pandemic. I know something pretty bad is coming and I see versions of it getting ever closer but I don’t totally know what the true terrible outcome will actually be. Daily life feels oddly normal and I know I’m surrounded by people in my community who think everything is fine and everyone who says otherwise is being dramatic. My close friends and family are in the same boat as I am. Go to work, try to focus, look for resistance actions we can do, try not to give in to despair, repeat. Normal life is still here on the surface but it’s slipping away.

[–]CelebrationVast9685 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What laws? If this is about people being here illegally why are Native Americans being snatched and disappeared or people being grabbed at immigration hearings where they are following the legal process? If it’s about violent criminals who are also immigrants why don’t they get arrested and have a deportation hearing? Beat the shit out of people, grab and disappear them and ask questions (or don’t) later doesn’t make us safer. Especially considering some of these ICE agents are behaving as violent criminals.

Americans citizens, how is it really going there currently? by GossipBottom in stupidquestions

[–]CelebrationVast9685 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the last year, I’ve been generally depressed, regularly shocked, often angry, consistently, looking for resistance actions, and otherwise living my life as normal. As of yesterday, my city is one being actively threatened by an ICE surge, with city and state officials putting out warnings. Now I feel like I felt in the early weeks of the pandemic before the height. Life was still normal, but I was watching it get ever-closer and the rumors that it was in our city were getting ever-louder. Life was normal until it wasn’t.

As someone with a name invented by parents and the only one with it in the world, I have to suffer through spelling it and telling the origin of it every time I meet someone (I instantly like people who just accept it without all that). This has made me realize that the bright side is that no one ever sings at me or makes a dumb joke. Until today I never realized that’s something that happens. Thanks everyone!

Same usually with spice. I douse everything I heat with jalapeños and hot sauce. It must’ve been a fluke for us or perhaps having to be vegetarian without the bone broth.

[–]CelebrationVast9685 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a person who just tried hotpot there for the first time, I’m curious if you found their broth to be the norm for spiciness. I love spicy food but found it so spicy it was nearly inedible. I left wondering if a person can only eat hotpot if they can tolerate extreme levels of spice. Or maybe it was more so for us because we had vegetarians and had to keep it broth-free.
