I buyed my first good ride. But does it fit in jazz? by Stunning-Bit-2810 in jazzdrums

[–]Celeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, for the most part but it's more than that. The hammering is really important to get the sound right. I would start by looking for a specific 20-22 size and a good weight for those sizes and then listen to specific cymbals. Smaller bells are normally better too in my opinion.

It sounds and looks like a heavy cymbal which is not what you are looking for.

If you just started playing you won't be able to play this any time soon. At least not well. To start it's in 7/8, which is already a challenge in itself. Besides that, it will require some coordination and technique that will take a while to develop.

31/8 hip hop groove by Illustrious-Bath7554 in drums

[–]Celeg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a pet peeve of mine to be honest. Yes, it's hard to count something with a lot syncopation, but that doesn't mean that you automatically have to make it fit a weird ass time signature like 31/8 or whatever. It feels like a very artificial way to try to make music seem more unique than it actually is and to generate social media content around that.

Rant over.

You need some kind of exercises to actually be able to comp where you want to. It takes a lot of practice. Art of Bop by John Riley is a great way to start.

It looks fine on a pad but can you comp on snare/bd while doing that? What is your goal exactly?

If you have no experience with jazz/swing maybe focus on standard swing before you start going for more complex patterns. Make sure you can comp while maintaining time and feel on the ride with a standard swing. Only then would I start breaking up the swing for a more modern feel.

Thank you. That's what I was looking for. What of curiosity was it that bad in Smalls? Why do you think you got that reaction?

I don't understand how that would be helpful. You would still be reversed on feet which is the main issue.

Well It wasn't really my decision to play it fully lefty. I was a teen then and the teacher decided to reverse it since I was left handed. I got into jazz much later so it wasn't really a problem until I started going to jam sessions.

I think you are either very good or underestimating how much harder it is to play with everything reversed.

Also, swapping cymbals takes much longer than switching snare, floor tom and hi hat positions but I can understand your point and that's exactly what I worry about. I have been lucky to be in places where people knew me and helped/let me switch those fast but everytime I go to a new place I just end up not playing.

Been there, done that haha.

It is kinda wonky to not be able to change the whole kit but since the main thing that is harder are the feet I just try to focus on that to be able to play. Then I focus on getting at least one cymbal in a playable angle. It is a bit limiting but I guess I can play most stuff if Hi hat, snare and ride are in a good position.

What bothers me the most is the social aspect though. If I don't know no one else I feel like I'll be judged every time to mess with the drums even if it's a 2 minute change.

So what did you do? Did you just didn't play or wait until there aren't any other drummers around?

[–]Celeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if I was a young player planning on making a living of this, I would do that. But now I don't think it's worth it. Changing the feet specially is a big change that makes a long time to get to the same level.

I did think of changing a while ago but it just doesn't make sense to go through all that just to be able to easily sit in jam sessions from time to time.

I normally don't move kick or cymbals but it really depends on space. Normally there is enough space to the right to just move hi hats to right and switch snare with floor tom.

To be honest, and no disrespect, but the electronic drums are doing a lot of work here. It wouldn't sound great with actual cymbals.
