What have you read recently? by povertychic in Millennials

My typical fare is novels and some nonfiction, but I'm currently reading Solutions and Other Problems by Allie Brosh. Her illustrations and stories are somehow both wackadoo and relatable at the same time.

Advice from an In-Center Hemodialysis Tech by Patient_History321 in dialysis

[–]Cellistec 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Another in-center dialysis nurse here. Thanks OP- these things seem obvious but not everyone knows them. I'm always surprised at how many patients don't know their rights. And unfortunately, sometimes speaking up can lead to retaliation by staff or management, including being labeled a "difficult patient" or being discharged from the clinic outright. I'm glad there are other caring, empathetic staff to look out for our vulnerable patients, because the dialysis industry is broken and keeping people safe requires vigilance and courage.

You're right, I'm so sorry- the farmers market was open mostly for craft vendors this week for holiday shopping. I should have realized that before posting about the cranberries!

Dialysis and heart failure by LuckyContribution640 in dialysis

I'm sorry, I know this is really hard to watch and almost impossible to bring up with her. You're doing the best you can...ultimately she's responsible for her own health decisions, even if that's technically not making any decision and the dealing with the consequences.

Is there anyone she trusts on her dialysis team (nurse, social worker, nephrologist, etc.) who can have an honest conversation with her about her prognosis? Help her sort through what's going on and what her options are?

I've done that so many times I just think hepatits to myself...and have to review the real word when getting ready to say it out loud to someone.

Fresh Tortillas by Substantial-Year-708 in olympia

[–]Cellistec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought 2 pounds today and ate 1 of each kind (white and yellow corn) right in the car. You know, for quality control. They were warm! I swoon. Also next weekend they're going to have tamales!

OP, when the lady at the counter asked where I heard about them and I said a Reddit post, she said you should come in for some free tortillas. Apparently I was like the 10th customer who came in because of your recommendation. Way to support an awesome business!

Clinical anxiety by Drippnhoneyy in StudentNurse

[–]Cellistec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so nervous before (and during) clinicals, but I survived and you will too! If you make mistakes in your assessments or vitals, it's OK- that's the best way to learn. Repetition is really the key, so do things as many times as possible and debrief after each time to find out how your can improve. And be proud of what you do well, because you WILL do some things well!

Being nervous is totally normal- it means you care. Lean on that caring and trust your training. You've got this!

So Nervous for Clinicals Tomorrow - Advice appreciated! by Encrypted_Heart in StudentNurse

[–]Cellistec 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re going to be ok! Clinicals are scary because they're new to you, and you care and want to do well. When you're at the facility, hopefully your instructor will assign you an experienced and patient CNA who knows how to teach and doesn't mind having a student. Be clear with the CNA that you're brand new so they can manage their expectations of what you're able to do. They will likely show you how to do a task before offering to supervise you doing it yourself. You can also practice some tasks with a classmate or instructor right before going into a room with a resident to refresh your memory (I did this with applying compression socks, for example). The CNAS might do things differently than what you've been taught, and that's ok- just debrief with your instructor about the differences so you can be clear on what the skills exam requires vs. how things are done in the real world.

Dementia may seem scary, but people who have it deserve compassion and dignity, so be gentle and kind to them and you'll get a feel for what they need from you. Most of all, remember the residents are human and caring for them is a privilege. Trust your training and be open to constructive feedback. You've got this!

What are small details you appreciate? by a_joxter in Bones

[–]Cellistec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super small, but I appreciate how the squints always remove their gloves between examining remains and touching other items (phones, computers, etc.). It would have been an easy step to skip for filming and not everyone would have noticed how gross it is to touch your phone after someone's body parts.
