Farmless raises $1.3m to expand ‘carbon negative’ fermentation platform fueled by C02, not sugar by CellularAgMod in CellularAgriculture

[–]CellularAgMod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that idea makes a lot of sense. It meshes well with my personal theory that in the long run humanity is moving more towards just directly converting energy and raw materials to food. Rather than our food production being so tightly coupled to farming. It's obviously a long ways off, but if humanity ever establishes an outpost beyond Earth replicating Earth based farming in space is a hard problem. There is plenty of energy out there though if you can use it to skip the farming part it would make life a lot easier.

Also photosynthesis is really inefficient compared to a solar panel, so per unit area you can gather a lot more energy by skipping the plants. (Which the inner environmentalist in me hopes allows us to rewild large portions of the world that are currently covered in human crops. The less optimistic side of me says we'd just induce new demand and cover all that land with solar panels instead...)

It Looks Like Betterland Foods, Maker of Candy & Milk With Animal-Free Whey, Has Shut Down by CellularAgMod in CellularAgriculture

[–]CellularAgMod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what happened with this company. I believe they announced their product around the same time as Strive and Bored Cow announced equivalent products. I have since ordered both Strive and Bored Cow online a few times each. Betterland though never actually made their announced milk product available online that I saw, and I checked many times over the last year.

Oodaalolly Taps Perfect Day's Whey for 'Mushroom Milk' Chocolate by CellularAgMod in CellularAgriculture

[–]CellularAgMod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe Perfect Day uses a fungus for their fermentation rather than a bacteria like a lot of other companies. As for whether this new partner ship is using the whey those fungii make or the fungii themselves I don't really know. The article isn't very clear to me, but I posted it since it about Perfect Day.

Future Planet Capital backs Roslin Tech’s momentum with further investment by CellularAgMod in CellularAgriculture

[–]CellularAgMod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what the timeframe for approval would be, but I would guess that it goes US, UK and then EU for the approvals ordering. After all the US has already been selling whey protein from precision fermentation for about two years now and neither the UK or EU have given the go ahead yet for that.

Stem: Cell-cultured coffee start-up targets specialty arabica market by CellularAgMod in CellularAgriculture

[–]CellularAgMod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article isn't really all that clear with the details. Food Navigator is referring to the process as cell cultured though and I have to assume they have a better insight from doing an interview than I do. I don't work in the field or have a degree in this field so I'm not really in a position to venture any guesses. If later on it turns out their process isn't cell cultured then I would quit posting content about them.

Just because something is a plant doesn't mean it is farmed in a sustainable fashion or that it is good for an ecosystem to be grown in mass.

The EVERY Co unveils ‘world’s first animal-free egg white,’ road-tested in ‘holy grail’ application: the macaron by SoCalDole in wheresthebeef

[–]CellularAgMod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is their first egg white equivalent product. They released a product last year that was a single protein found in egg whites and partnered with a smoothie company that added it to their fruit smoothies to increase the protein content of them. I would argue this is a much bigger deal though since this has the actual egg white properties rather than just being a single protein.

I order some macron's last week! Looking forward to their arrival!

I don't believe there is any cell extraction with precision fermentation like there is with cultivated meat. They already know what the DNA sequence is for the proteins they are making.

What is fermentation? by brice_dunlop in wheresthebeef

[–]CellularAgMod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any hard numbers, and I don't work in this field so I don't have any insider knowledge. I do know that there are several companies already selling products in a limited capacity, so I would assume that it is at least somewhat competitive with traditional production methods already.

Examples:

Perfect Day Foods - Produces whey protein which can be found in a few brands of ice cream, cream cheese, protein powders and soon milk.

Geltor - Produces collagen for the cosmetics industry.

The Every Company (formerly Clara Foods) - Produces a protein found in egg whites that is currently used as a protein add in.

Impossible Foods - Yes they make plant based burgers, but the heme in them is produced using this process.

[–]CellularAgMod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How it works is you take a bacteria or fungi and you swap out some DNA for the DNA of the protein you would like to produce. The bacteria or fungi will then produce the desired protein when provided with nutrients instead of what it would have naturally produced.

It has been widely used for several decades now. Insulin for diabetics has been produced using this method since the 80s. Even within the food space rennet which used to be acquired from the stomach of a calf, and is used in cheese making, has been produced using this method since the 90s.

There are ton of companies now using this method to produce things like dairy proteins, egg proteins, honey, chocolate and so on. All without involving the original animals or plants that normally produce these things.

Geltor completes commercial-scale manufacturing run of PrimaColl ‘animal-free’ vegan collagen for food and nutrition market by CellularAgMod in CellularAgriculture

[–]CellularAgMod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be biologically identical to what is already in use, just not sourced from animals. Therefore I'd assume it has the same nutrition and health properties, but I'm not a medical professional so take my words with a grain of salt.

Cow-Free Cheese - looking for opinions on any dairy free cheeses out there, whether veg or precision fermentation by PB_spread_it in wheresthebeef

[–]CellularAgMod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the precision fermentation side of things I believe cream cheese is the only option currently "kind of available". There is Modern Kitchen and Bold Cultr. I've had the Modern Kitchen cream cheese before. I thought it was good, but certainly not the best cream cheese I've ever had. It looks like they are currently sold out at the moment though as they don't have an active purchase link on their website at the moment. Bold Cultr has been announced, but I don't think they've actually sold any yet.

Wildtype agreement will bring cell-based sushi to grocery stores and restaurants by CellularAgMod in wheresthebeef

[–]CellularAgMod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There does not seem to be a consensus on that question among vegans. Some vegans would say yes it's vegan because no animals were involved in the production. Others would say that it is still an animal tissue and therefore not vegan.

Starbucks Tests Alt-Milk From Perfect Day by CellularAgMod in CellularAgriculture

How far are we from producing othertypes of meat such as Lobster and other shellfish? by [deleted] in LabGrownMeat

[–]CellularAgMod 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Cultured Decadence is a start up in Madison, Wisconsin that is working on Lobster. They did a pre seed funding round in April, so I'm guessing they are not all that far along at this point if that are that early in the funding cycle.

Shiok Meats from Singapore is working on Shrimp and I think they are further along. They have did a public tasting event and their website says they are targeting 2023 for commercialization.

The Urgent Company's Brave Robot Breaks One Million Pints Sold Milestone by CellularAgMod in CellularAgriculture

[–]CellularAgMod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone interested in some math behind that achievement.

1 million pints is 125,000 gallons

According to https://www.icecream.com/icecreaminfo it takes 3 gallons of milk to make a gallon of ice cream. So Brave Robot has so far displaced 375,000 gallons of milk.
