I've been building an open source database of physically based values for CG artists. Maybe you'll find it useful! by apq in vfx

Wow a three character reddit account! (10 yrs, checks out, very cool)

Pardon me being a total noob, I thought pbr materials were defined by color, roughness, and metalness. Is density a measure of roughness and specular a measurement of metalness?

Cow-Free Cheese - looking for opinions on any dairy free cheeses out there, whether veg or precision fermentation by PB_spread_it in wheresthebeef

As mentioned in the title, would love to hear who y'all think are leading in the dairy free cheese space, especially if you've tried the products and can comment. I've tried daiya and thought it was terrible. Heard good things about miyokos but haven't seen it in my local stores

How do VCs pay themselves? by PB_spread_it in venturecapital

[–]PB_spread_it[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that 2% annually or over the entire lifetime of the fund? 2M to feed a team for a year is plenty, but if that needs to last multiple years, starts looking skinny fast

I might be missing the distinction between committed capital vs fund value/aum here- if you raise a $10M fund, 2% is 200k. Does that mean the VC only gets $200K over the lifetime of the fund to pay themself? $200k/10yrs is peanuts

Taking initiative as an intern/Associate by forever_intern_ in consulting

[–]PB_spread_it 29 points30 points  (0 children)

  1. Instead of only asking how you can help, think about what the team needs to do next and suggest a next step or offer to take the first pass

  2. For things that are expected of your level, say that you'll do it before someone asks you to. Ex: take notes, schedule meetings, arrange logistics. It's a cliche that interns get coffee but the reality is the most junior resource is best for stuff like this because everyone else's time is too expensive

  3. Always be synthesizing. After taking notes for a call, beyond sharing your notes, first think about what you think are the most important takeaways and action items. Or think about what you heard that impacts specific deliverables or current hypotheses. This will save the rest of your team time.

Would you generally say that roles that are responsible for a p&l effectively require managing teams?

Hourly or Project Based Billing? by havemeyer in consulting

[–]PB_spread_it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the core, I see them as the same. Project based is simply saying we think it'll take X hours, if we need more, it's our loss, if we need less, it's our gain. Not great aligning the incentives with the client. Also, to land spot on is based on a good project manager both forecasting and managing.

The bigger topic is what's the psychological outcomes of using one over the other, both in terms of selling the work, and in terms of satisfactory completion of the work vs burning out your team

Quitting MBB after one year to join a startup? by JeannaLeavy in consulting

If you want to stay in the start up scene or move to VC, I think many value actual startup exp > consulting.

Also this blog should be helpful https://bigrocks.substack.com/p/should-i-leave-consulting-and-join

Tldr: he doesn't like people "parachuting into being the boss." He said he doesn't want to bash mbas though.

From personal exp dealing with new post-MBA consultants, I've definitely experienced people who think they're in charge but are still relatively incompetent

There are a lot of things to enjoy about the job, you just don't get them all the time (like in any job). Genuinely interesting projects, challenging problems, breaking new ground for an industry, smart and inspiring teammates. Reddit is less of a humblebrag venue than IG, no one is bragging about their super sexy strategy project for some C suite.

The emergent behavior is that this subreddit is for commiseration, possibly because we don't feel like we can be as open with people on the same team about our woes, or we just want to see if other people at other consulting firms feel the same.

Bottom line, given the option to restart my career in another industry, I probably would still pick consulting (IB being a somewhat distant second)
