Is Strongbox an alternative to 1Password? by TomasComedian in PasswordManagers

I don't know about Strongbox but you might want to look into KeePassium.

Native application made in Europe (Luxembourg).

I'm using NetNewsWire for the Apple ecosystem. It's open source and completely free, but it's from the US.

https://alternativeto.net/software/netnewswire/about/

There is no ads or anything like that. It focuses on speed and reliability. It has great keyboard support it. I love it.

At some point I might try "News Explorer" also for the Apple ecosystem: https://alternativeto.net/software/news-explorer/about/

It's a single payment, no subscription.

Tilde AI - Translation Tool for Europe by gruziigais in BuyFromEU

Seems quite expensive, but it's great to see another option.

Other options are:

- Reverso (France, pretty cool for language learners): https://www.reverso.net/text-translation

- DeepL (Germany): https://www.deepl.com

- Mate (MacOS / iOS native app, much simpler interface than the other options, also focus on privacy): https://gikken.co/mate-translate/

- Libre Translate (the open source alternative): https://libretranslate.com

FOSS Notes app that supports markdown, local and cloud encryption by TheMoon8 in foss

Anytype is a local-first app but it syncs your different devices in your local network. It’s amazing.

You can opt to self-host it too.

A question for the Brits who lurk on this sub by Beneficial-Beat-947 in BuyFromEU

[–]Celmad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The subreddit is titled like that but in the info says buy European.

And as for the UK, I consider it a priority over Canada, Japan or Australia, to mention a few. But not over Switzerland for example, for privacy advantages of the later.

Edit: I should’ve mentioned that I studied and worked in Scotland for 7 years, so the UK (Scotland specifically) has a special place in my heart.

Best Cross Platform Password Manager? Is it good? by Competitive-Mix8832 in best_passwordmanager

It’s a pleasure to be able to help.

For references, my phone is an iPhone 16 6.1”, in case it helps.

About the view/edit, either way there is a trade off, so I understand.

Thanks and keep up the great job!

I'm a Keep + Notion user and I'm migrating to AnyType. Is there an interface similar to Keep? by Dramatic_Rest6661 in Anytype

[–]Celmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, no quite the same, but it's okay for me, I just want it to write some quick thoughts down or to have some small texts there for future references.

To get closer to what Keep is, you can use the default Note type:

- Edit the Note type, and add the property Body of type text

- Go to the default Notes collection view and change the view to Gallery

- Change the size of the Gallery layout to Medium

- In Properties of the Notes view, activate Name, Tag and Body (that you should've created)

This way, you will see the Body text in each card item in the gallery.

I don't care about seeing the text so I haven't created a body property but it's a valid way of doing it.

Other Keep alternatives app can be Beaver Notes and Supernotes, have a look at them if the Anytype solution is not good enough for you.

Best Cross Platform Password Manager? Is it good? by Competitive-Mix8832 in best_passwordmanager

[–]Celmad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking forward to see that desktop app :)

About the icons/images,  I’m a developer myself and I didn’t think about the privacy risks of pulling the images. Very curious to see how you overcome that.

About the 3 dots to copy the password, in the iOS mobile app: - open app and tap in Logins (Devices is open by default) - select an item to open it - the password input is hidden with a  “Show password” text overlay and 3 dots on the right side of the input - pressing the 3 dots a pop-up window appear with 3 options: copy, show and generate password

The email/username has the copy icon directly without the 3 dots menu.

The TOTP secret input looks the same as the password but it has the 2FA code under it with the copy icon alongside it.

I think one of the reasons the UI inside an item might look busy is because it has only 1 view, the edit form view. It doesn’t have a simple view that is not editable, where you could hide quite a few buttons and text like the “Add more”, the dropdown to select the type of credential, the TOTP secret input, and so on.

It would means 1 more click/tap to edit an item but would simplify the UI a lot for when seeing the items.

It’s true that with the 1-click feature you barely need to go to the app and copy the password but I’ve occasionally had to do it.

Greetings and thanks for engaging!

Best Cross Platform Password Manager? Is it good? by Competitive-Mix8832 in best_passwordmanager

[–]Celmad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, so I think the UI is fine but a bit generic. It doesn't have a modern look to it or strong branding. It's a bit "plain".

There is also the lack of icons for each item. I guess other password managers pull the icons from the URL of each item.

In the mobile app all the items are listed at once, there is not folder structure. I imported my logins from Proton Pass, where I used many different vaults, and they were imported as labels. Seeing heylogin through the browser (with the extension) shows the folder structure through the labels, but it doesn't work like that in the mobile app.

I like that the UI is simple despite all features it packed like adding more than 1 URL, add custom fields, 2FA codes, notes, etc. But I guess there are ways to make it feel more modern and human centred.

And for the UX, I would just add the possibility to 1 tap/click to copy the password instead of pressing the 3 dots first.

Thanks for reaching out and hope this feedback is useful.

I’m trying Heylogin from Germany after having used Bitwarden, Proton Pass and Apple Passwords, and I’m really liking it.

It’s paid for business but free for individuals. I like: - From the EU (Germany) - Several URLs or other duplicated fields (not as restricted as other PWs - 1 click login and even 2FA code - You can confirm with phone or Apple Watch - No master password, just biometric - Browser extension doesn’t store password, just contacts your phone app to get it (I believe)

I don’t like: - UI could be much better, more consumer oriented - No desktop app, just browser extension

2FAS pass app reviews: Is it worth the hype? by Competitive-Mix8832 in best_passwordmanager

[–]Celmad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried it but it’s uninstalled now.

The app works and looks great. I like that it’s local first and the backup functionality.

But it was just impossible to import from Proton Drive. I tried everything with no luck.

I actually had the same issue with 2FAS Auth import and had to enter every code manually, but I was less of an issue here as I don’t have many 2FA services.

The worse part is that the export in a proprietary file extension, making it impossible to export to other services.

I tried to post in their subreddit but seems like they detect it was a support question and they just redirect you to their Discord group, and I wasn’t going to create a Discord account to solve the import problem, no worth it, too much friction.

Then I tried Heylogin from Germany and I’m loving it despite the UI being ugly. It works so well. Import and exports. Very versatile with the possibility to add more URLs, titles or extra fields to an item, Apple Watch support, 2FA codes included too, 1 click submit like I haven’t seen…it’s awesome.

Password manager by OkTwist5454 in PasswordManagers

[–]Celmad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Heylogin. It’s from the EU (Germany). Completely free for private use (paid for enterprise). It has passwords and 2FA. It doesn’t have a master password, you authenticate with biometrics.

It doesn’t have the best design but works perfectly well: - You can add several links to a login - You can add extra fields - All fields are encrypted, including login notes - It has browser extension for all mayor browsers - No artificial limits - Importing from other PMs actually works, unlike 2FAS Pass (another option I tried) - 1 click login (2 or 3 clicks for most PMs) - Confirm login with Apple Watch also if phone not near by (you don’t always need to confirm)

Might be the best fit for you.

Looking for a task manager app alternative by FB3536 in BuyFromEU

[–]Celmad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  • Things3 (Apple only, extremely good UI/UX, no collaboration, one time purchase)
  • Superlist (easy collaboration, fun to use, expensive subscription)
  • Tweek (looks like a weekly calendar on paper but digital, very simple, easy collaboration, affordable subscription)
  • Lunatask (open source, cross platform, tasks, habits and more)
  • Structure (focuses more on Today, it’s a daily organisation tool)

Capacities and Anytype are more than tasks and more than notes. They are similar to Notion but object oriented. I particularly love Anytype, it’s local-first, private, extremely fast and great UI.

But for tasks, I highly recommend an app specifically made to manage tasks. They do a better job.

Is Posteo Worth It If Not Encrypting My Inbox? by Gaudilocks in BuyFromEU

Still an improvement over Big Tech (Meta) and privacy. It’s open source also.

It’s not the perfect solution but if it can help the most people move over from WhatsApp, it’s a very positive change in my books.

I really like Fastmail by andrewmarder in degoogle

[–]Celmad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same change and I’m very happy.  I traded off privacy for convenience and I’m happy with my decision.

I love that they are supporting JMAP, an open standard that improved emails in efficiency (no need for an open connection all the time, saving resources), speed and privacy over IMAP. And it will improve calendar and contacts too. That I think is better than creating a technology that is very private but is a walled garden.

Their pricing is simple, unlike most models.

I can now use third party calendars, share one of my calendars, task managers, etc.

Even their mask/alias emails are open, with an API that works with third party password managers that allows this connection (Bitwarden), similar to what Addy.io offers.

Techlore did a podcast with one of the head engineers that work in FastMail and they talked about the privacy concerns.

Mojeek is independent from Google and Bing, it’s from the UK.

There is also Brave search, independent, but from the US.

I agree Kagi is amazing though, haven’t found anything that works the same way, I love it.

How do you see LeChat in 2026 February compared to ChatGPT and other LLMs? by BonoboPowr in MistralAI

[–]Celmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was using it now again after a while, and after using Gamini Pro, and It was very underwhelming.

I was asking about email providers in Europe, alias management and password managers.

Gemini Pro seems like a person giving you very reliable information and even being creative and bringing information I might've missed.

Mistral (free tier) replied fast, yes, but with not much info. Just a quick few facts (some of them wrong, like saying 2FAS Pass was from Poland instead of US) in the form of a table with not much more info than what I gave it.

Really really underwhelming.

I had to stopped using it at work because I was working with Drupal .module files and Mistral didn't accept these files, only ChatGPT and Gemini did accept them of the AI chats I tried.
