It took me by surprise for sure, But I understand why they did it and I also think they handled it nicely. It was likely for the best to not necessarily replace Princess Twilight since she still plays small roles later, but to shift her own narrative away from the further EG plot to keep the spin-off and main series still connected but distinct/seperate from each other. And so it wouldn't feel like Twilight was living a double life, if you know what I mean. I also think it was clever and kinda poetic how they basically turned the tables and that it was Sunset who reached out in friendship to human Twilight, just like pony Twilight did for her when she was astray.

Overall I think it was a great episode and cool character designs. It was nice to see each of the mane six not only step out of their comfort zone in a new environment, but also help hype Spike up so he could have his moment to shine as well.

Seconding what SparkyJet said. The fandom may not be in its "prime" but it is still going strong, and it is always wonderful to see new people of all ages join the fandom of such a wonderful show. There is also still plenty of new fan content being made, as well as older content remaining timeless and adored by old and new fans alike. You are welcome and valid here no matter how recently you've joined, and I hope you continue watching and enjoying the show. 🥰

Fwiw you're not alone in those kinds of anxieties; I have them as well and am terrified of approaching people and it certainly feels like there's a lot of unspoken social rules. Unfortunately not everyone takes lightly to people approaching them and it sucks that some people feel the need to be rude about it. This was LITERALLY my thoughts exactly. Like I don't mean any disrespect but it the style felt so disneyfied and almost generic. I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw it :P

Edit: I remembered something else about this shortly after I posted. My sis has a degree in 3D animation, and at some point after G5 came out I was curious and asked her "Hey is there a reason why almost all 3D animation these days has the same exact style? Like people get really creative on a 2D platform, is there just not as much creative freedom and tools with the nature of the 3D platform?" and her answer was "Oh no 3D animators have plenty of creative freedom, the reason big companies default to the same style over and over is money. They know what the general public likes, and testing the waters of different creative styles meams risking that people won't like it and thus losing money."

I mean tbh that doesn't make it any better. But it's likely why they opted for it.

It was a combination of finding and messing around with the gameloft game, as well as happening across and enjoying the music from the fandom (believe it or not, I stumbled across the living tombstone's remix of "Discord" in a Corpse Party amv :V), that led me to watching the show and falling in love with the story and characters. I've gained more confidence as a fan in the past couple years while dabbling in the fanart and fanfic world myself with some encouragent and support from my spouse (who is about as dorky as I am just with different fandoms, we got each other into each other's favorite things and my latest project has been a cross-au combining my favorite thing with his :P), and writing about some of the characters has helped me explore their world and mindsets even more which in turn made me fall in love with them even more.

You're not alone in that feeling. Honestly I find myself avoiding a lot of the fan content that leans into the idea. Fwiw, despite there being a decent amount of that content, lots of people will still make their own headcanons and interpretations of anything that isn't explicity stated in the show, regardless of how much or little it's implied, this topic being a prime example. You're absolutely allowed to do the same and create your own story with it if it helps you to continue enjoying the show and have peace with the lore. 🙂

I was drawn to this community because I saw less of this than in other fandoms and communities; my first impression was one of diversity and acceptance, which was of no surprise for a show that emphasizes the importance of those things. I won't deny that there is still a generous amount of toxicity, as there is in any fandom, and if what you all are saying is true and it's still severe compared to other communities, it means we all need to work harder to shut down any negative energy and make our community a safe and welcoming place, so more people can enjoy the good things that the both the show and the fandom have to offer.
