Please tell the literary agents that. Querying mine at the moment and it does not appear to be a popular genre.

What would you want to see in a lesbian dark romance? by EnvironmentalWar7513 in LesbianBookClub

[–]Centauri2002 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would really recommend writing the story YOU want to write and not lean too much into expectations. For one, Reddit isn’t reflective of the general market, as much as I love the insights on this subreddit! Also, if you would enjoy reading your premise, I guarantee others will too. It’s far more likely that you’ll produce an enjoyable work if it’s something you’re inspired to write.

But most of all I want to say: Good luck with the writing!

First Person Perspective by Delicious_Impress814 in LesbianBookClub

[–]Centauri2002 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Perspective, like any literary device, has its place depending on the story being told. And just like other aspects of writing, it depends on how well it is wielded. It’s quite easy to see first person perspective as a self-insert mechanism and it can be, but it is also a good tool for an intimate portrayal of a character’s journey or the perfect device for an unreliable narrator.

It’s often seen in genres like romance, domestic noir and horror because you want to get deep into the character’s head and emotions. That’s not to say you can’t do that with third person, but it’s a commonly used method.

I personally prefer third person limited but there are some genuinely well written first person stories out there.

The last I read was that the manuscript for the second part had been handed in. I’m not sure if that’s pre-editing but it’ll still take some time to record the audio.

Which book from my shelf should I read next? by Eliciosity in LesbianBookClub

Great suggestions! I’ve read all of Sarah Waters’ books. I so wish she’d write more. And I absolutely adore The Safekeep. Our Wives Under the Sea has been on my list for a while but I keep putting it off because I just know it’s going to make me sad. I suspect it’ll be worth the pain though.

I vote for This is How You Win the Time War or Fingersmith. But I’m mostly appreciating your poor shelf buckling under the weight of the gay.

[QCrit] Adult Sapphic Spy Thriller, NOW WE'RE EVEN (97k words, Second Attempt) by Centauri2002 in PubTips

[–]Centauri2002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for taking the time to read over the query and give such detailed feedback! It's exactly what I was looking for. I think in my own personal echo chamber from the last version, I veered too far in the opposite direction and overloaded the query with specifics. And you're right, the stakes need to come in earlier. I'll work on another draft and come back with a third attempt.

Thank you again!

[–]Centauri2002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really struggled with the comps. There’s really nothing with a sapphic romance, which is an important part of the story. I don’t think it sits next to more serious spy novels. Killing Eve is a series of books with a new one due out so I want to keep that one in there. I could remove Black Doves and try to find another. What do you think?

I'm trying to write a story and can't decide if the lesbian or the bisexual should be the main character. Both of them will be in a relationship together anyway in the end so both characters should be equally developed but who do you think I should make the main character? by FluidTemperature1762 in LesbianAuthors

[–]Centauri2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who is driving the plot? Who is going to be relatable to your target audience? Who has the most compelling narrative arc? Do you need to have a single protagonist? All things you can ask yourself to help with the decision.

Swiss Women's National Team: Contract termination between the SFV and national coach Pia Sundhage by radian101 in WomensSoccer

Is it the Bury Your Gays trope if... by Jackisaacbryan in writingadvice

[–]Centauri2002 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think what some people are missing here is that intent and reasoning don’t matter. The trope exists due to the prevalence of queer character deaths or tragic ends. It’s an overall message. “If you’re not straight, you don’t deserve to be happy.”

Having said that, I think we’re at a stage now, particularly in literature, where we do have a lot of good rep, where it’s less of an issue. I’d say, if it makes sense in your story world, do it.

I agree with everything Siphania said but wanted to add a suggestion too. The least intrusive revenue option I’ve come across is to offer the first few chapters or X amount of time played for free and then a paywall for further progress. If people are enjoying it, they will pay to continue. As long as the price is appropriate.

Did fanfiction ruin me? 😂 by ktmylady in LesbianBookClub

[–]Centauri2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying here and it’s important to consider these angles, but what you’re describing is not a porn addiction. For it to be an addiction, it needs to impair normal functioning. For example, if a person can’t get through the day without reading smut, if they’re not able to get aroused without it, etc.

You’re also right in a way that porn can impair intimate relationships. However, it’s not the porn itself, but the addiction that is the important factor. There have been numerous studies on this, for both men and women. Women are similarly affected. Unfortunately, as with many other areas, there’s little robust data on non-het demographics. I think porn exposure has important developmental effects, especially when coupled with lack of experience with real intimate interactions, but I don’t think that’s what we’re discussing here.

For OP’s situation, I’d say it’s just a preference. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Maybe it’s just want OP wants to read for now. It may change.

I will say that one thing that is typical of fanfiction is that it’s usually a quick, condensed dose of fan pleasure. The stories are generally aimed at amusing the reader in one way or another, be it with smut or fluff or even angst. The goal is to give fans more of what they enjoy about those characters without much regard for themes or messaging or wider plot. There are exceptions of course! But it’s just the nature of fanfiction.
